  1. "We check every new food for the label to say gluten-free as well." Unfortunately, not all foods that say gluten-free really ARE gluten-free. Rice Dream milk comes to mind - it has barley. And there are a host of other "gluten-free" foods that actually have a high level of cross-contamination. I know it would be a lot of work and a pain in the neck, but...
  2. Yes, it's true. Check out the Newbie 101 thread in the coping section for even more information on cross-contamination. You need new butter, Nutella, mayo, anything a knife that has touched bread has dipped into. I know that for a non-celiac it sounds extreme, but it really is true. You can buy small containers of these things, or just get the larger ones...
  3. Somewhere, somehow, gluten is sneaking into your diet. Time for some detective work. Check all medications and supplements, be sure you are not using an old pot/pan/wooden spoon/toaster. Check your shampoo/conditioner/hairspray/lotions. Check your lipstick/lip balm. Is there ANYTHING new you are using since your September 2013 test? Are there gluten eaters...
  4. "I'm sorry it makes you uncomfortable when I don't eat, but wouldn't it make you more uncomfortable if I got sick? Or wouldn't it make you more uncomfortabe if I stayed home just to keep you from feeling uncomfortabe?"
  5. The gluten-free/corn-free vitamins I finally found (Lifetime Iron-Free Soft Gels) has iodine in it. I too had to give up iodized salt because of the corn, and being in the middle of nowhere in the midwest, I can't get seafood, so I'm very glad I found these vitamins.
  6. Make sure you don't take the probiotic at the same time as the antibiotic. Wait at least two hours after taking the anti before you take the pro. Otherwise the probiotic won't work.
  7. Actually, among the many nasty things corn can do to those who are sensitive to it, joint pain is common. Open Original Shared Link
  8. First, I would give him a big hug and let him know how much you appreciate his concern. Then, as Mamaw suggested, educate him as much as you can. Let him know that although you still have bad days, you ARE on your way back to good health. And then promise him that if you are having a bad day or feeling crappy, you will let him know so he can pamper you. ...

    ARCHIVED 'patients Become Experts'

But you know, GI doctors are SUPPOSED to be experts in the field of GI illnesses, yet how many folks right here have complained about GI doctors who know NOTHING about celiac, nor how to test for it? That is inexcusable, especially considering all of the recent attention to the illness. You would THINK that these doctors would investigate all of the new information...
  10. There are non-dairy ice creams available at your health food store. One of them is made with coconut "cream". I've never tried it but a friend of mine has and she loved it.
  11. I agree with all that has been said here. I'm in a different position. Although I do have an oven, I am a lousy cook who really hates to cook. So when I do, I make very large batches and freeze the leftovers in idividual servings. Two burners, a microwave, and a crock pot will get you just about anything you want to make. What I do is cook on Sundays...
  12. Love it, NVS! I'm not in Canada, but I'm not that far from it either, and I have to tell you, I have been close to tears the past few days! I can't TAKE it anymore! 17 below zero at my house and in some of the outlying areas it has been 28 below!! I can't get the temperature in my house up past 53 degrees. My furnace broke and I'm using space heaters...
  13. Yeah, I'm still eating some processed foods. I went without them for a long time and when I finally found gluten-free/corn-free ice cream and gluten-free/corn-free potato chips, I jumped on them. As a matter of fact, I found a new (to me) brand of potato chips the other day. The health food store was out of Kettle Brand but they had Boulder Canyon Olive...
  14. I would have loved to get a diagnosis so I could keep an eye on my healing, plus I would have gotten my nutrient levels tested. But with no insurance there is no way I could pay for all of that. I am relatively sure I DO have celiac because A.) My mom had it (and she did have an official diagnosis), and B.) my symptoms cleared up on the gluten-free diet....
  15. OK, if you don't mind, could you have a doughnut for me too? And I'd love a few of those buttered dinner rolls, preferably fresh out of the oven. Oh, and if you're ever near Plainfield, Connecticut, could you go to Pizzarama and eat a large pepperoni pizza for me? That's for breakfast and lunch. For dinner could you please have some baked stuffed shrimp?...
  16. I guess if I were only interested in celiac (wheat, rye and barley), I would have read the first post in this thread and, seeing it was about corn, not read any farther. But that's just me. Anyway, I'm glad for you that you have no further intolerances.
  17. "The statement you make about medical care in the US is not true. Anyone can walk into an emergency room and get free medical care here. Taxpayers foot the bill but they do in every other country also. You can also apply for Medicaid if you are financially strapped......really financially strapped and not faking it, and get free medical care also. There are...
  18. Yeah, I was away for a couple of days or I would have piped up sooner. I would hate to see someone with a corn intolerance get sick because of bad/erroneous advice.
  19. Larry Mac, from the very sources you cited: Maltodextrin can be enzymatically derived from any starch. In the US, this starch is usually corn; And citric acid: In this production technique, which is still the major industrial route to citric acid used today, cultures of A. niger are fed on a sucrose or glucose-containing medium to produce citric acid...
  20. I have this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cervical_rib Which causes this: Open Original Shared Link It says here that it is rare, but MY doctor told me about one out of 100 people have it, and I have met four other people who have it. If I sit at a keyboard too long, try to use a slicer, or do anything where I have my arms out in front of me...
  21. A chance of a lifetime - I would say YES! Within five months you will almost assuredly be feeling better, plus you will be more experienced with how to deal with restaurants. Plus, as Mamaw said, you will have time to do research on gluten-free foods available in the cities you're likely to go to. Even if they have no restaurants, they will have grocery stores...
  22. What sort of neck pain is it? I mean, does it feel like muscle or joint pain? Does it hurt all the time or only when she moves her neck or arms? Is it an ache or a sharp pain? If gluten-free is the answer to her problems the sleep thing will probably clear up soon. Mine took a while but after years of chronic insomnia, I now sleep like a baby. It is also...
  23. And these are the tests you should ask for: tTG IgA and tTG IgG DGP IgA and DGP IgG EMA IgA total serum IgA control test
  24. I heard this on the radio this morning. I thought the problem with GMO's was that they could drench the plant with pesticides and herbicides which would undoubtedly get sucked up by the roots and become part of the plants. I still think that could be the problem, but this article states that GMO's have a certain PROTEIN that regular plants don't have, and...
  25. Actually doctors used to think that kids with celiac could "outgrow" it because often their symptoms would be reduced or even go away. But they still had celiac and their bodies were still being damaged. I believe my Mom was one of them. She had symptoms when she was a child although I don't even think they knew what celiac was back then (1930's). But when...
