ARCHIVED Ice Cream Maker?
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I guess the recipe was this or something similar: Open Original Shared Link Anyway, she doesn't like that recipe as much as the one she used on this stuff she made for me. This has half and half, milk, whipping cream, organic sugar, and vanilla. I'll be going home shortly and I'm going to have some. I'll let you know how things turn out. -
ARCHIVED Ice Cream Maker?
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
She said it was a vanilla recipe that contained actual flour. -
So a friend is bringing me some home made vanilla ice cream. She is using organic milk so there is no corn contamination from vitamin D fortification. But she just mentioned that she has used a recipe in the past that had flour in it. So my question is, can an ice cream maker that has had flour in it ever be cleaned well enough to prevent CC? I won't turn...

ARCHIVED Corn Free, Gluten Free & Soy Free
bartfull replied to daisymae106's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
NFL, stop. Take a deep breath. Relax. It's going to be ok. OK, first of all, this thread is over two years old and I doubt the OP is even reading it. Second of all, have you been diagnosed with celiac? If so, it would help to know what your test results were and how long you have been gluten-free. Third of all, celiac is not an allergy, it is... -
ARCHIVED Struggling With Being Left Out
bartfull replied to christianmom247's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There's nothing wrong with asking for something you can eat except for the possibility of CC. (They might spoon your berries with the same spoon that they spread the berries on the cake.) Even better than risking CC, you could find out what they are serving and bring your own so you are eating a safe version of what everybody else has. I have to admit... -
ARCHIVED Wine ... Gluten Free?
bartfull replied to kdevault's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I drink LOTS of coffee every day. Coffee is safe. There are some FLAVORED coffees that have gluten, but plain old coffee is safe as kttens. Red wine is safe too. I personally get horrible stomach cramps from it, but it is not because of gluten. There is something else, maybe tannins, that causes my problems. -
ARCHIVED Eating Gluten Free With Friends Visiting
bartfull replied to user001's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Addie just said what I had WANTED to say, but I was trying not to scare you. And Laura is right - don't ASK them where they want to eat. TELL them where you are all GOING to eat. And when your diabetic friend finds out how good gluten-free can taste, maybe she'll try a gluten-free diet after all. -
ARCHIVED Eating Gluten Free With Friends Visiting
bartfull replied to user001's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You've gotten a lot of great suggestions here. I'd like to add another: explain your illness to your friends, and if they are truly friends they should be happy to eat at any restaurant of your chosing, especially since it's your birthday. -
ARCHIVED How Do You Work With This?
bartfull replied to SoLacey's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If the gelato was from an ice cream shop odds are there were some ice cream cone crumbs in it. I used to work in ice cream shops and there were always bits of cone and crumbs falling into the tubs of ice cream. It's best to stick to ice cream at home. I'm sorry you're feeling so lousy. I run my own business so I HAVE to be here every day. I avoid glutening...- 18 replies

ARCHIVED Thinking Of Intentionally Glutening Myself.
bartfull replied to GFAnnie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Please go to the DH section and read up on it. Many people with DH have no digestive symptoms because the antibodies are attacking the skin instead of the gut. The thing is, if you eat gluten you may wind up with a bad flare of DH that could last for a couple of YEARS. I think it would be better to just keep being extremely careful about CC, and keep getting... -
ARCHIVED Dad Brought Home A Bag Of Wheat Gluten, Now I've Given Up.
bartfull replied to MermaidPaz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's yard sale season. If you can't afford to buy all of the things folks have suggested, see if you can find a hot plate/burner at a yard sale. You might be able to get one for five bucks or so. Just ask them if you can plug it in first to make sure it works, and examine the cord to make sure there is no fraying. With that alone and a pan to cook in... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Factors And Triggers
bartfull replied to NoGlutenCooties's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Irish, I'm not trying to argue with you. Honestly. I'm just pointing out why some folks believed one could have celiac without the genes - because we read it here. Now we know better. But any newbies (or even "oldbies" like myself) could click on many threads and get the wrong idea. That second thread I posted was only a month old and in it, even one of... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Factors And Triggers
bartfull replied to NoGlutenCooties's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
And here's a recent thread where people had a DIFFERENT gene. https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/106735-hla-dq28-negative-ttga-strong-positive-where-to-now/#entry908882 (I think I'm posting these in a way to defend myself because I have told people, based on what I have read here, that some folks who DON'T have the gene(s) go on to develop celiac... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Factors And Triggers
bartfull replied to NoGlutenCooties's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi all! I don't want to get into the middle of a disagreement, but I will say that I read here on this site, that not everyone who tests positive for celiac tests positive for the genes. I know I have read it from several different posters over the years. I looked it up and the first one I found was from back in 2011. https://www.celiac.com/forums... -
ARCHIVED Still Not Taken Seriously?
bartfull replied to Tryingcake101's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I have mentioned the same thing a few times. I worked in restaurants for years and I never saw a salad station I would trust. -
ARCHIVED Worse Before It Gets Better?
bartfull replied to Russianbear's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Whoa. First of all, hops is not a gluten problem. The gluten in beer comes from barley and sometimes wheat. It seems you have been jerked around by doctors. If you were diagnosed by blood test in 2011, you HAVE celiac. A negative biopsy could be either because you stopped eating gluten after being diagnosed the first time, or because they didn't take... -
ARCHIVED Favorite Snacks
bartfull replied to SteelerGal's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Boulder Canyon kettled cooked in 100% olive oil potato chips. Blue Bunny All Natural vanilla ice cream. I think that's about it. Other than those, I just eat meals. -
ARCHIVED Tired Of Having No Life
bartfull replied to FruitEnthusiast's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know if I don't WANT a life because I'm too tired, or if I'm so tired because I have no life. I hate going places and doing things and if I could stay home in my jammies all day I would love it! I guess my life is here at my shop, but when closing time comes, everybody get out of my way - I'M GOING HOME! I don't know if I'm always so tired because... -
ARCHIVED Food For Thought: What You Need To Know About Gluten - Moscow Villager
bartfull replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
This is the article Karen and I were talking about a few days ago in the thread titled, "Wow. Just wow". It HAD a recipe in it that called for 3/4 cup of WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR. We both contacted the media company and although they did not respond to us personally, it looks like they did remove the recipe. -
ARCHIVED Additional Food Intolerances - Poll
bartfull replied to CR5442's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Corn: similar to gluten but much more severe. D, nausea, weakness, brain fog, severe muscle spasms, and a drop in core body temperature. Oh yeah, and psoriasis flares. Soy: Psoriasis flares, minor D. Nightshades: Can eat a little. Too much and I get joint pain and psoriasis flares. High salicylate foods: D and psoriasis flares. Histamines... -
ARCHIVED Cold Snowy Winter Comin'............ Git Ready
bartfull replied to Candy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You must be East of here (the Dakotas). We had snow Sunday night, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. But I'm happy to tell you the SUN is out today!!! And it's supposed to warm up to the 50's by tomorrow!! So hang on, it's coming. (<- Hopeful words from the Land of Eternal Winter.) -
ARCHIVED Dealing With People Who Don't Understand
bartfull replied to veryami1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You've gotten some good advice here. But I would like to address the dinner party. Anyone who would get mad about keeping their cat away from someone with asthma does not deserve to have guests. Asthma can kill. And if you still intend to go, bring your own food or eat before going. When this person asks why you're not eating, just smile and say something... -
ARCHIVED I Think I’Ve Been “Corned”
bartfull replied to FruitEnthusiast's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
FruitE, have you checked your medications and supplements? Almost all pills and capsules contain corn starch. As I told you, corn starch doesn't have the protein that other corn byproducts do, but it might not hurt to check. Another biggie is "citric acid" and "ascorbic acid". You would THINK these came from citrus fruits, but alas, they can get them... -
I just wrote to the email address you provided for the parent company (thanks) and told them they not only needed to pull the article, but to print a follow-up explaining that whole wheat flour will make anyone with celiac or NCGI very sick.
