  1. You know, I just gave a guitar lesson to an incredibly talented young boy, and it is such a satisfying feeling when they "get it" and I see improvement. Now, reading your post I get that same feeling. You "get it", you're improving, and whether I had a small part in it or if it was my friends here, I feel that satisfaction. Because when you get right...
  2. I think most of us think gluten first whenever we get sick. We KNOW gluten isn't the source of all our evils, but because we live with it every day, that's the first thing we think of. I know one time I got sick with what turned out to be the stomach bug that was going around, but before I realized what it was, I was wracking my brain trying to figure out...
  3. Celiac runs in families, and if your daughter definitely has celiac, my opinion is that you most likely do too. My mother was diagnosed with it, and based on resolution of my symptoms on the gluten-free diet, my doctor has given me the diagnosis. (I have no insurance and there is no way I would ever put myself through a gluten challenge anyway.) So go...
  4. Yeah, winter is back here too. The forecast goes up to next Saturday on which the HIGH is supposed to be 7 degrees! I HATE WINTER!!!!!!!!!
  5. I avoid lipstick, lip balm, and hand lotions that contain gluten. The foundation, eye makeup, and blusher I use may have gluten. I never even checked. I just make sure I don't pop anything into my mouth after touching my face unless I wash my hands first. But then again, I never put ANYTHING into my mouth, EVER, unless I wash my hands first. As to the...
  6. I won't do it because I have worked in restaurants and I know how most back room salad bars are set up. Usually the croutons are above the vegetables and it is way too easy for a busy waitperson to drop a crouton or three into the veggies. I have also seen, many times, a waitperson dip a crouton into the dressing and pop it into their mouth while they are...
  7. Even if it DOESN'T cause celiac, you KNOW it can't be good for you. I wish I could have a garden too, but it just isn't possible on my postage stamp sized lot. Maybe if things work out I will be able to buy lots of stuff at the farmers markets this summer and do some canning and freezing. Who am I kidding? I can't even cook today's meals in a reasonable...
  8. My thoughts? Try reality. I don't mean to sound harsh, but celiac is a real, physical disease. Everybody, and I do mean everybody, has something to contend with. We can't wish it away. We deal with it. The way we deal with it can strengthen us and make us better people, or it can weaken us and put us into a world of denial and wishful thinking. I...
  9. Yes, I have celiac. I had digestive issues, and celiac caused my psoriasis. I had brain fog, swelling feet, frequent and painful hiccups, headaches, and a host of other small symptoms that I never would have associated with celiac. The best thing you can do right now is go to the Newbie 101 thread in the coping section. It's a great way to learn about...
  10. My first advice has nothing to do with celiac. You should not use your full name and email address as a screen name! Change it quickly! Then we'll get back to celiac, but yes, it seems you DO have it.
  11. I hope you went back to your doctor and presented him with the results. And I hope you said something like, "If you want me to trust you with my health care, you need to trust ME to know when my body tells me something's wrong!"
  12. Just the winter weather we've had alone is enough to cause this. I have a lot of non-celiac friends who have expressed those feelings lately. I feel that way! I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I feel like I just can't take any more. I have cried more than once like a spoiled little kid, because it's been "so cold and miserable", and" I hurt from the...
  13. Tell her if she is posting, she has to show links to REPUTABLE sites to back her claims. Just like this site, if you make a claim, you have to back it up.
  14. Smelling salts.
  15. Addie is right. After you have done your research, you close your eyes, grit your teeth, and take the plunge! And honestly, running your own business is the most satisfying thing you can do. Think about it - you spend at least eight hours a day at your job, and unless you love your job, that is eight hours of your day spent being less than happy. Kind of...
  16. Does your wife use lipstick? Maybe you are getting glutened from her kisses. Or maybe she uses hairspray? A lot of hairsprays have wheat protein in them and if she sprays it where you can breathe it in, it will get in the back of your throat and you will swallow it. Check to see if she is using new brands of these things since you had your lower antibody...
  17. Yep, bad doctor. Why am I not surprised? It seems the majority of them are like that. Can you find a different doctor? Get your records and take them to him/her.
  18. As others have said, it depends on the rules in your state. I know you say you can't afford to open your own bakery, but that would be the best way to go. If there is something in your town for rent that has an oven, you would be good to go. If not, you might try to find a small place for rent, make sure the electrical service is adequate, and then look for...
  19. I can understand why the neurologist does not want to do celiac testing. It's not his field of expertise and he probably wouldn't know which tests to order, nor how to read them. But I'm glad you are seeing him because those colored shapes she is seeing don't sound like anything related to celiac. Even if she tests negative for celiac, she could well...
  20. I wish I could get Enjoy Life here. (But then again, I guess I don't need the extra calories.)
  21. Most (not all) chocolate has soy lecithin. Could just be the soy in chocolate that is bothering you. Also, I have noticed with myself that if it doesn't have soy, I can eat a LITTLE, but if I have too much I get sick.
  22. I have no problem with them inserting genes from one type of potato (a type that is resistant to late blight, for example) into a different type of potato. I know that a lot of gmo's are not only safe, but truly helpful. But with corn (and soy), they modify them so that they can tolerate massive doses of herbicides. These herbicides have to be taken up...
  23. ((((((HUGS)))))) I'm so sorry you had to go through this. I know nothing I can say will make you feel better, but if it could, I would say it so you got over the glutening AND the embarassment immediately.
  24. Just thought of something else that may seem a bit extreme, but in my opinion, possible. I notice by your name, you play darts? (I do too.) I know that sometimes I'll be at a friend's house and we'll be playing. Sometimes someone will forget their darts, or for some other reason, they want to use mine. If they are snacking while the game is going on, I make...
  25. Oh yeah, do you eat oats? Even certified gluten-free oats bother some of us.
