ARCHIVED Was Looking For A Welcome Thread.
bartfull replied to Aquadan005's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
WELCOME!!!! Yeah, stick to whole foods at first and when it comes to gluten-free substitutes, it'll be trial and error. Some stuff is really good, some is really bad. For instance, Canyon Bakehouse makes great bread. But if your first taste of gluten-free bread were EnerG tapioca bread like mine was, you'd want to just shoot yourself and get it over... -
ARCHIVED Push-Back Against Report Linking Gmos To Celiac Disease, Gluten Sensitivity - Celiac.com
bartfull replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I think the biggest problem with GMOs is that because these plants are immune to pesticides, they use more pesticides on them. It gets into the soil too, and we all know what happened to rice because of that. I even saw an article in the paper yesterday that said they are going to start using more of the chemical (not the dioxin) that was in agent orange... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Withdrawal
bartfull replied to massagemamaof3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Have you read the Newbie 101 thread in the coping section? If not, check it out. It could just be something as simple as someone double dipping in the butter. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Withdrawal
bartfull replied to massagemamaof3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yep, I would check for cross-contamination or other intolerances. Withdrawal doesn't usually start that late and it only lasts a couple of weeks. -
ARCHIVED Cold And Flu Season - What's Your Remedy?
bartfull replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sleep. It's all I take for a cold. -
ARCHIVED New To The Forum, Questions
bartfull replied to EmilyE's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Which blood tests did you have? If you got a copy you can post them here and some knowledgable folks can help interpret them. Also, false negatives are fairly common. But even if you don't have celiac, you may have non-celiac gluten intolerance, which has similar (and sometimes worse) symptoms. gluten-free oatmeal gives a lot of us trouble so it is not... -
Hi Celiac? This thread is nine years old. Why don't you start a new thread, introduce yourself, and let us know about your symptoms? We'll be glad to help you in any way we can. And welcome to the forum.

ARCHIVED Do I Get Re-Tested? Several Glutenings In Last Month...
bartfull replied to Nikki2777's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
"I'm going to get even stricter about cc for a while and hope that will help," You meant you're going to get TOTALLY strict about CC FOREVER, right? Just bustin' your chops a little. Hope you're feeling better soon. -
ARCHIVED Birthmark Making Its First Appearance In Decades?
bartfull replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't know, but I think they were OK. With no insurance I couldn't afford testing. As a kid though, my iron levels were really low. I had to take iron supplements for the first ten or so years of my life. That was also when my brithmark was at its brightest. About 15 years ago when I did have insurance I had a complete physical including blood work... -
ARCHIVED Birthmark Making Its First Appearance In Decades?
bartfull replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
When I was a kid I had quite the strawberry birthmark on my face. A dime-sized spot on my cheek with a twine-thick line that connected to a "puffed rice"-sized spot between my upper lip and my nose. I hated it! When I was 20, I had to have a wisdom tooth surgically extracted, and the surgeon was also a plastic surgeon who mentioned he could easily remove... -
ARCHIVED Cold Snowy Winter Comin'............ Git Ready
bartfull replied to Candy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Same here. Yesterday it was 50 degrees. Tomorrow it's supposed to go to 15 below, and the wind chill will be 30 below. That's warm compared to a few miles north of here where they are predicting a fifty-five below wind chill. I have all the supplies I need and will be spending the day indoors tomorrow, except I guess I'll go out and start the car and let... -
You have celiac disease. It was diagnosed by biopsy (which is considered the gold standard) when you were a child. Of course the biopsy years later was negative because you had healed by then. I'm not sure which blood tests you had recently, but blood tests can be false negative. It's true, they used to think a child could outgrow it, but they were sadly...

ARCHIVED Is The gluten-free Diet Making Me Stupid?
bartfull replied to C-Girl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
No, no, no! First of all, you are NOT stupid! And second of all, unless you have had untreated celiac for years and years, your brain fog WILL lift, and you WILL get full cognitive function back! Be vigilant about gluten, yes, but don't just assume you will be in a fog forever. Vitamins can help too, especially B12. My poor Mom had celiac all her life... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Better But Still Not 100% Since Going gluten-free
bartfull replied to Timguy86's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There's no proof that there are no little green men on Mars, so should we all keep and "open mind" about that too? Or more to the point, should we tell people who are hearing voices in their heads that it just might be the little green men on Mars who are sending them messages? Don't you think it would be kinder and more productive if we sent them to a psychiatrist... -
ARCHIVED Struggling To Get Better, Loads Of Different Foods Are Making Me Ill
bartfull replied to Sparky123's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Maybe it's dairy. A lot of us have trouble with dairy at first. The only way to really find out what's bothering you is to do an elimination diet. Start with whole foods you know are safe - meat, veggies, some fruit, and maybe rice. Once you are really feeling good, add a food. Give it a week, then add another. It seems to take forever, but it's the only... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Better But Still Not 100% Since Going gluten-free
bartfull replied to Timguy86's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Bella, it's not narrow-mindedness, it's wanting to stick to the facts. All of the leading celiac researchers have stated that there is absolutely NO EVIDENCE that cross-reactivity exists. ALL of them. While a lot of us do have additional intolerances, they do not damage our villi, and if we were having cross-reations, they would. I would much rather heed... -
ARCHIVED Attempting Gluten-Free
bartfull replied to mommy2mande's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Another reason to get tested is that celiac runs in families. If you know you've got it it's really important to get your daughter tested too. Even if she tests negative at first, it can develop at any time so she should be tested periodically throughout her life. -
ARCHIVED Hospital Meds
bartfull replied to kenlove's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It isn't enough to say "wheat, rye, barley and oats". I know I have mentioned before about when my Mom was in the hospital. They didn't know what celiac was so I told them she couldn't have those things. Her first meal came with a big old slice of white bread on top. I demanded to talk to the head of the kitchen staff. He said, "But it's white bread, not... -
ARCHIVED Health And Beauty Aid Overhaul...
bartfull replied to africanqueen99's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah, the "ultra-last lipwear" is what my local Family Dollar carries. I DON'T think Mary Kay or Avon are gluten-free, or at least most of their stuff isn't. At least that is what the dealers I USED to go through told me. -

ARCHIVED New To The Forum, Questions
bartfull replied to EmilyE's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you asked your doctor to test you for celiac? It's unfortunate but true that a lot of doctors never even consider it unless we ask. -
ARCHIVED Health And Beauty Aid Overhaul...
bartfull replied to africanqueen99's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use the one called "sugarplum". It doesn't have the staying power of the more expensive brands, but at that price you can apply more often and still come out WAY ahead. -

NYC (New York Color) lipstick is gluten-free and it is 2-3 dollars at Family Dollar. I'm sure you can also find it at other stores. -
ARCHIVED I Said I'd Lose The Gluten...not My Appetite!
bartfull replied to tonalynn's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am just like you in that I hate to cook, I've never been great at it, and I don't have the desire to learn either. Also, I too cook in big batches and throw it in the freezer so I don't have to cook often. The difference is, I can eat the same thing every day without getting sick of it because I no longer look at food as something pleasurable, but as... -
I used to tend bar. The mugs and glasses where I worked were cleaned in a three-part sink. The first one was filled with water and a cleaning solution, and it had motorized brushes that we were supposed to run both inside and on the outside of the glasses. (I'm not explaining this well. Sorry.) The second sink was clear water for rinsing. The third sink had...
