ARCHIVED 1St Holiday Season After Dx - How Did You Feel/do/cope?
bartfull replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you read the newbie 101 thread? If not, you need to. And if you have, go back an read it again. Make sure you click on all the links provided too. If you have stainless steel, all you have to do is clean them well. Scratched plastic, teflon or any other thing that has tiny crevases where gluten can hide (such as strainers) needs to go. Wooden spoons... -
ARCHIVED 1St Holiday Season After Dx - How Did You Feel/do/cope?
bartfull replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Take your own food and GO! I bet no one will be insulted. There will probably be a little bit of conversation about it and that will be a perfect time for you to educate them a little bit about the pans and scratched plastic and all the rest. You could even tell them you have been advised to only eat things you have cooked yourself. Tell a "funny" story about... -
ARCHIVED 1St Holiday Season After Dx - How Did You Feel/do/cope?
bartfull replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Both of you need to remember, if you're going to let someone cook for you, that if they use any scratched plastic, wooden spoons, cast iron, teflon, pot holders, strainers, or turkey basters that have been exposed to gluten in the past, you WILL get sick. If any of YOUR food is on the countertop when they decide to bake, the flour dust will settle on it and... -
ARCHIVED Has Anyone Experienced One Or Some Of These Mental Health Issues?
bartfull replied to L.O.C.T.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think your post is going to get lost in this thread. You should go to the "parents of children with celiac" section and start a brand new thread. That way everyone with kids who have similar problems will see it. For what it's worth, I think it's possible that gluten has at least made these symptoms worse, but you'll get better answers from folks with... -

They are your family. Explain to them that you're too new to this to take chances, and that you'd feel more comfortable bringing your own food. Tell them how easy it is to cross-contaminate stuff.Explain that even YOU mess up on occasion and you don't expect them to learn in a couple of weeks what YOU haven't even learned yet. Tell them if you bring your... -
ARCHIVED He's Definitely Growing Now!
bartfull replied to mommy2krj's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I bet he didn't like meat before because it made him feel bad. When our guts are a mess, heavy foods like meat don't sit well. Now he is making up for lost time (and nutrients). Congratulations! -

ARCHIVED Cold Snowy Winter Comin'............ Git Ready
bartfull replied to Candy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It was 60 yesterday and in the upper 50's earlier today. The temperature has just plummeted and it's supposed to rain/snow. They are warning that the roads will become icy quickly. I'll be heading home the minute it starts to precipitate. Supposed to be in the lower teens tonight and zero tomorrow night. By Saturday they say it'll be back in the 40's. Rollercoaster... -
ARCHIVED Lewey Body Disease (My Mom Just Was Diagnosed With It)
bartfull replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Don't know of a link, but my Mom had dementia. They SAID it was alzheimer's, but I believe it was because she stopped going for her B12 shots. Anyway, Mom's dementia had her thinking her family was against her too. I was her only caregiver and it was so hard! I had to keep reminding myself that it was the disease talking, not her. Please, if you need... -
I used to eat at Engine 6 when I worked in Norwich. That was before gluten-free. As a matter of fact, when I was a kid my Grandma lived about two blocks from there. (Now, which emoticon do I use to indicate nostalgia?)

Prayers for your Mom, and for you. (((((HUGS))))) -
Nothing to add, but I'd like to welcom Battlekittyspastica and compliment you on your screen name! I USED to have a cat like that, but alas, she is old now and a more fitting name for her would be Floppykittylazica.

ARCHIVED After Celiac Diagnoses - Were You Angry?
bartfull replied to tonalynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Mostly I am so glad I live where I do now, but when I hear about all these great places to eat...I lived In Connecticut, not too far south of Worcester and used to go there all the time. -
I had to stop in there to get bread last night. I mentioned how sick I got and they told me to bring it back for a refund. AND, while I was in there another guy I know (not really well, but I always liked him) was bringing a delivery of organic bison. He told the owner to GIVE me five pounds! Every time something bad happens it seems that something good ...

ARCHIVED New Here, Not Officially Diagnosed
bartfull replied to Neon rainbow's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
"I'm not longer on any medication, don't get me wrong I still have depression and anxiety (and will always, Runs in my family) it's just not as extreme." Celiac runs in families too, and one of the symptoms is depression and anxiety.Seratonin, which regulates mood, is priduced in the small intestine. If yours is damaged from celiac, there is your answer... -
ARCHIVED How Can You Manage A Gluten Challenge When Cc Affect You So Badly?
bartfull replied to Renegade's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
One does not have to be "properly diagnosed" in order to be really disciplined with their diet. All one has to do is have the desire not to be horribly ill. I don't think any of us here would knowingly eat gluten any more than we would knowingly eat strychnine, "proper diagnosis" or not. -
I'm feeling great today, thanks! I took this on Friday evening. Was really shaky on Saturday, and yesterday I took the whole day off and mostly just slept. Got up this morning feeling like I could take on the world. (But instead I took on the cat and a couple of guitar students who don't practice enough. )

And this one that I started a thread about a few minutes ago: Open Original Shared Link It's about how our gut flora effect our minds, and our moods. (And I am originally from the People's Republic of Connecticut, but now reside in the Cowboy's republic of South Dakota. I'm not even a Gemini. I'm a Virgo, but like our friend Gemini, I am ultra conservative... -
Nope. Ate from the same piece of chicken I had cooked and ate the day before. Same batch of sweet potatoes (I cook a bunch, then peel and mash them), and same bunch of broccoli. I took the calcium/magnesium one day with no problems. Then I took the C the next day and this happened. It was Solaray brand. Ingredients: "Vitamin C (as calcium ascorbate). Other...

Considering how many of us have trouble with anxiety and depression, and how many of us need probiotics, I thought this was interesting: Open Original Shared Link

I STILL haven't found a vitamin I can take, but I know I need some. So I went to the health food store and asked again if he could help me find something. Well, there was a calcium/magnesium that looked safe, and a vitamin C powder that he thought MIGHT not be sourced from corn. I took some. Oh Lord, I was SO SICK!!!! Within a half hour my stomach started...

ARCHIVED The Gluten-Free Fad Is Dangerous - So Is The Backlash - Science 2.0
bartfull replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Thanks, Irish, and everyone else too. I'm sure he will try to twist what I said or find another way to insult all of us, but honestly, who cares what he thinks? An insult from someone like him should be taken as a compliment. I wouldn't waste my time at all if he hadn't brought me into it. -
ARCHIVED The Gluten-Free Fad Is Dangerous - So Is The Backlash - Science 2.0
bartfull replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I was away yesterday and just saw this. I went on the site and commented. This clown has attacked the gluten-free diet before and calls it a fad. I'm sure he will insult me further after reading my comment. He's a sensationalst fool who likes to get people stirred up, most likely because hit causes his blog to get more hits. I'm sure the advertisers love... -
Mom had a poodle who was born sick. (Poor little thing was rescued from a puppy mill.) She (the dog, not Mom) had severe pancratitis, and her bladder was permiable. She even went to Tufts and has been written up in veterinarian medical journals. Anyway, Mom cooked for the dog. She ate chicken and she ate hamburger. And later in her life, she had to be...

ARCHIVED How Long Do Symtoms Last?
bartfull replied to Jennifer333's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
One piece of bread after 11 years of being gluten-free is nowhere near enough gluten to get an accurate test. They say you need to eat gluten every day for three months before you get tested. I'm curious why you were tested after 11 years. You obviously knew gluten bothered you. (If you weren't sure before you are now!) Quite a few of us here never got...- 3 replies
