ARCHIVED Cold Snowy Winter Comin'............ Git Ready
bartfull replied to Candy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Good morning everybody! We got hit and hit HARD!!! I didn't even come to work yesterday. It rained and then changed to ice, then changed to snow. We only got about four or five inches here, but up north around deadwood they got over 30 inches. We had some heavy winds, but they got worse. And that heavy wet snow on top of tree branches meant lots of powetr... -
ARCHIVED Cold Snowy Winter Comin'............ Git Ready
bartfull replied to Candy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
They are predicting one to two FEET here between tonight and Sat. AM!!!! That being said, it's coming up from the southwest which means that often, they split up at the mountains which make the "bowl" we live in in my town. So we might not get nearly as much as the rest of the area. I'm prepared though. Filled my gas tank yesterday, got plenty of food... -
ARCHIVED Recurrent Stomachaches In Child
bartfull replied to nicolebeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I won't buy ANY baked goods at farmer's markets. Most people who bake gluten-free foods for them also bake regular foods too. Just about any baked goods from farmer's markets are contaminated, unless they are made by a person who lives in a gluten-free household. -
ARCHIVED Celiac With No Perceptible Symptoms
bartfull replied to caniac4's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Insomnia, thinning hair, swelling feet, psoriasis, brain fog, frequent and painful hiccups, chronic grumpiness. These were all symptoms that I had that I never would have attributed to celiac. and all of them cleared up when I went gluten-free. But there is another reason to avoid gluten besides the fact that you will feel better, and besides all of the... -
ARCHIVED Best Gluten Free Bread?
bartfull replied to gemlechner's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yeah, corn bothers me. At first I couldn't tolerate ANY corn, but now have gotten to the point where I can handle corn starch. Almost ALL gluten-free breads have at least corn starch in them. I THINK the Canyon Bakehouse no linger does. (I know they USED TO have corn MEAL in their bread but no longer do.) I haven't had any Against the Grain bread, but I have... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac And Might Be Doing Something Wrong...
bartfull replied to pestew's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Have you eaten the lettuce at home without problems? I ask because I could not tolerate lettuce (of all things!) while I was healing. I couldn't tolerate a LOT of things that were without a doubt gluten-free at first. When we are healing just about anything can set us off for no good reason. I would avoid restaurants for the first few months, stick to...- 8 replies

ARCHIVED About Hubby
bartfull replied to w8in4dave's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It could be that he is just not used to all the CRAP they put in most processed foods anymore. I think if anyone went on a whole foods diet for a few months and then ate the chemical stew that most processed "foods" have become, they would get sick too. -
Microwaved eggs work best scrambled. I water them down a little and beat the heck out of them, then I put a lot of cheese in thebowl with them. They take a while to cook. Two minutes, then open the micro and stir them up. Then another two minutes and stir. Then maybe another two minutes. Of course I'm using my tiny, low-powered micro at work. If yours has...

ARCHIVED Got Cramps After Chips?
bartfull replied to strings's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This early in just about anything is likely to set you off. Think of it this way: Your gut has something similar to "road rash". When you have road rash, everything stings, whether it be soaps or lotions or even the wind blowing on your tender skin. The best thing would be to stil to "gentle" whole foods for right now. Plain meats, potatoes. fruits and... -
ARCHIVED Do You Take Your Celiac Disease Seriously?
bartfull replied to GF Lover's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It depends on what time of year it was. If it was around Christmastime it might have been Evil Santa. Remember him from the old Calvin and Hobbes strip? (He was the one who always brought socks and underwear.) Maybe he put gluten in the woman's stocking!!! -
ARCHIVED Reactions To Non-Gluten Food
bartfull replied to JAY-RU's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Steph, I don't know WHY, but it happened to me. I had mild digestive symptoms and bad psoriasis. When I first went gluten-free, all I ate was whole foods - meat, potatoes, veggies and fruit. My gut symptoms were gone and the psoriasis almost completely healed after YEARS of having it. Then after a few weeks I made some gluten-free cornbread and BAM!! Sick... -
ARCHIVED Dating Someone With Celiacs?
bartfull replied to ecafhtroneht's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Brush your teeth well before the date, and if you go to a restaurant, eat what your date eats. There will be no gluten on your lips to worry about. -
ARCHIVED Do You Take Your Celiac Disease Seriously?
bartfull replied to GF Lover's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think it's very possible to get glutened by YOURSELF if you touch the dirty bus seat that a toddler with gluteny hands and lots of crumb spillage sat in, and then pop food into your mouth. But who in their right mind wouldn't WASH THEIR HANDS before eating after touching a dirty bus seat anyway? That's all it takes to keep from getting glutened, or to prevent... -
ARCHIVED Do You Take Your Celiac Disease Seriously?
bartfull replied to GF Lover's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Although I don't want to do damage to my gut for fear of cancer and lupus and all of the other horrible things that can happen to a celiac who eats gluten, I'll tell you a "secret". As a smoker, I have to admit that all of those long term scares don't always work. I KNOW smoking can cause horrible things too, but I haven't quit yet. But if smoking could... -
ARCHIVED Afraid Things Getting Worse
bartfull replied to trayne91's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Nightshades are tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant. They are known in many folks to induce joint pain. It sounds like your pain isn't just in the joints, but it couldn't hurt to give them up for a while. -

I notice your sig line says gluten-free 5/12, but your post says 5/13. I'm assuming the 13 was a mistake and you have actually been gluten-free since your diagnosis in 2012? But I also notice you also say, "Normally if I accidentally ingest gluten, which I do sometimes because I still don't think about things on accident or whatever the case may be, all... -
ARCHIVED Are These Neuro Symptoms?
bartfull replied to Nikki2777's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yeah. I don't want to scare you but it sounds a lot like what they call TIA'a, or mini-strokes. They can happen at any age, and they are often precursors to major strokes. You should see a doctor immediately. If you go to the ER, they will see to it that you get in to see your doctor right away. -
While you're waiting at least you can test out the "other intolerances" theory. Do an elimination diet. Ditch all of the common foods that cause intolerances like corn, soy, nightshades, dairy, and whatever else you suspect. I'm not familiar with high histamine foods, but salicylates are another one that can cause problems. Get your diet down to the very...

ARCHIVED Having Trouble In Starting Gluten Free
bartfull replied to strings's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When I was going through gluten withdrawal (it is a very real, physical withdrawal), I was hungry all the time. I could eat a huge chicken breast, and very large sweet potato, a large serving of broccoli, and even though my stomach was full, I was still hungry. Just eat lots of small meals throughout the day. Eat someting every hour if need be. The withdrawal... -
It could be something as simple as one of the family "double dipping" in the mayo or what have you, when they make a sandwich. They might not want to mention it because they don't think it would hurt, and "Mom's already emotional enough". Or it could be kissing your husband after he eats a sandwich. Or the kids after they have been eating gluten. And...

ARCHIVED Celiac Or Not?
bartfull replied to CajunChic's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If the gluten-free diet makes you feel better you either have celiac or non-celiac gluten intolerance. I don't know if an official diagnosis is important to you or not. Many of us (myself included) do not have a formal diagnosis, but we know that gluten makes us sick. If you're still having bad days, it might be because you are getting cross-contamination... -
Have you had your vitamin levels checked? If you have deficiencies, that could be the problem. B12 in particular, can be a problem. Even if you eat right and take a multi, it's hard for us to absorb enough. They make sublingual tablets that really help.

ARCHIVED How To Deal With Unsupportive Friends?
bartfull replied to madminx's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, when I am not feeling good, close friends will ask if I've been glutened, but other than that, if I have to skip out on a planned event, I just say I'm not feeling well and leave it at that. -
I too have MVP. I never had to wear a heart monitor. My doctor told me that if I ever had pain to go to the ER, but other than that, it wasn't harmful. He said that a lot of women have it. I used to get "flutters" several times a day, and my heartrate was always about 120. It actually started quieting down even before I went gluten-free, and now although...

ARCHIVED "store Locators"
bartfull posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's great that we have computers to help us find good gluten-free products, but I WISH these companies would update their store locators on their websites! I buy both Against the Grain products and Mulay's sausages right here in my town, yet when you go to their websites and type in the zip code, they say "not found". I mentioned this to Against the Grain...
