ARCHIVED I Love Bread.
bartfull replied to rubes's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you like french bread, after you have been tested go buy yourself a loaf of Udi's MULTI GRAIN bread. It is HEAVENLY! Even my non-celiac friends love it. If you like those multi-grain breads in the grocery store with all the nutty little bits in them, go buy yourself some Canyon Bakehouse San Juan Seven Grain bread. Another one that non-celiac people absolutely... -
ARCHIVED How To Keep A Food Diary?
bartfull replied to Celiac Mindwarp's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just carried a small notepad. After a while it became second nature to write down everything I put in my mouth during the course of the day. On the flip side of the page I would write down any symptoms I felt, and what time they started. After a while a clear pattern emerged. I could guage how long it took for a reaction (about eight to twelve hours for... -
ARCHIVED Multiple Food Allergies/socializing
bartfull replied to missy'smom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You mentioned sewing. Is there a quilters group in the area? If not, maybe you could start one. What other hobbies do you have? If you like to read, maybe you could find (or start) a reader's group. Do you like to write? A writer's group. Music? Outdoor activities? I have multiple food intolerances, and I have been bringing my own food to events for the... -
I just realized that for the first ten months or so, I too thought about it all the time. Not just at the grocery store or when I went to someone's house, but all the time. Now, well I can't say I NEVER think about it, but HARDLY ever. I enjoy my food, and I enjoy time with my friends. I always bring my own food and no one has a problem with that. Celiac...

Mine hasn't gotten my soul yet, but she sure does have my heart.

Don't be sorry, Adalaide, we need lots of snow here too. I wouldn't mind at all if only they would put some sand down once in a while. I did make it home, and the pipes were OK. The poor kitty's dry food dish was empty! She was VERY happy to see me, and I spent the whole day with her. I'm sleeping in the kitchen right now so I can close off the rest of...

You know, with celiac being in the news so much lately, you'd think doctors would "brush up" on it. I fear that those who do just go back to the books they studied when they were in medical school rather than getting the LASTEST information. And that makes me wonder, what OTHER diseases and conditions do doctors not keep up on? No wonder we are taking...

The sun is shining brightly now, and it shines on the hill early in the morning. I'm going to wait another hour or so and then go try it. If you don't hear from me for the rest of the day it's either because I made it home and went to bed, or because I crashed the car trying. (Just joking - I hope! Nobody will be driving fast enough to induce injury, even...

Up early this morning. We had snow yesterday. I think we got about four inches. Before it started to accumulate it melted so the roads were wet, and the temperature plunged so the wet turned to ice. By the time I left the shop last night (about 5:30) it was about 20 degrees. AND NOT A SNOWPLOW IN SIGHT!!!! They don't want to pay overtime so if it snows...

ARCHIVED Is Craving Food A Symptom Of Celiac Disease?
bartfull replied to hubicka's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You said you were gluten-free for two weeks two months ago. Are you eating gluten again? Are you doing a gluten challenge? It could be that you are not digesting your food and so aren't getting the nutrition from it. When you decide to go permanently gluten-free, I suggest you eat lots of small meals instead of three big ones. I normally eat six times... -
I'm one of those whose symptoms were so mild I never knew I had it. It was the psoriasis that tipped me off. It too was mild at first although it started twelve years ago. But my early meonopause symptoms started 20 years ago. Makes me wonder if I had celiac for a lot longer than I had thought. Makes me wonder what kind of damage I really had/have. I sure...

ARCHIVED Can Anyone Offer Help For How To Find A Good Restaurant Where I'm Traveling?
bartfull replied to slee11211's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Got no answer for you, but Google might. I just wanted to tell you that I LOVE Humboldt county. Big trees, cool shops, and some great music stores. I hope you have a wonderful time! -
ARCHIVED Very Upset.. Told Blood Tests Are 90% Accurate! Help!
bartfull replied to lmc22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You could have non-celiac gluten intolerance. It is a very real condition with symptoms that are the same, just no intestinal damage. But the solution is the same - a gluten-free diet. When you were gluten-free before, did your symptoms resolve? -
I voted last Friday. I will be up very late tomorrow night, listening to the radio.

I'm not sure, but I did find this. AND, if you go halfway down the page, a poster named "Moral Animal" has some interesting theories about tolerating sals. Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED Gluten Nightmares- Literally!
bartfull replied to Pauliewog's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had a dream last week that I was eating CATFOOD and it tasted pretty good! But then I realized there was gluten in it and I freaked out. I didn't mind that it was catfood, just that it had gluten. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Chicken? No Such Thing
bartfull replied to buckwheat's topic in Super Sensitive People
Buckwheat, chicken skin is no more porous than human skin. Humans can't get glutened from touching wheat because the molicules are not small enough to pass through the skin. If you wash chicken well, it is perfectly safe. I'm not saying you don't react to chicken. It is very possible that you have an allergy or intolerance to chicken, but it is not because... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Chicken? No Such Thing
bartfull replied to buckwheat's topic in Super Sensitive People
While there may be wheat in some commercial chicken feeds, the one I buy locally is corn.(They also sell an oat-based feed which isn't nearly as nutritious for the chickens.) I react badly to corn, you might even say I am supersenstitive to corn, but I am able to eat chicken every day with no reaction whatsoever. I can even eat grocery store chicken with... -
I haven't heard any mention of the homeless people in New York or anywhere else for that matter. A lot of the homeless live in the tunnels. I'm sure the shelters were full and there wasn't any room for more. I am praying for all those who were in the path of this storm, but especially for the ones who had nowhere to go, and seem to have been forgotten.

ARCHIVED Board Upgrade - Please Report Bugs
bartfull replied to Scott Adams's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
I have "new posts" on my favorites bar. It usually shows threads with new posts made within the last 24 hours. It was working fine before the power outage yesterday, but this morning page one shows threads from 2006. When I go to pages two and three everything is fine, then if I click back on page one I get new posts like normal. I didn't even notice until... -
Talked to a friend in Eastern Connecticut (where I used to live), and he said the power never even flickered. He has a few TWIGS down in his yard, but that's it. Looks like my friends back there got off easy. Phew! I feel better already.

ARCHIVED Really? Celiac Disease Is Influenced By Season Of Birth - New York Times (Blog)
bartfull replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I was born in August, but Mom was a January baby. But hey, if there is research money out there for the taking, I'm sure these people were glad to take it. -
Yes, please, if you know someone who is elderly or disabled, perhaps you could invite them to stay with you for the duration. Some folks will insist that they want to keep an eye on their own homes, even though there is nothing they could do if something DID happen. And some have too much pride to admit they need help. Maybe if you tell them you are having...

Back in the 80's during hurricane Gloria, we lost power for three weeks! (Small towns are the last to get power back.) When it DID come back on it surged. It blew out the motor in my refrigerator. So make sure you unplug anything that might be harmed by a power surge. Stock up on snacks too. And toilet paper. Everyone stay safe and if you can,...
