ARCHIVED Most Gluten-Free-Friendly City
bartfull replied to kdonov2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't blame you for wanting to get out of Chicago. The traffic alone is good enough reason! From what I've seen here, San Diego is another celiac friendly city. I used to live there many years ago, long before I was hit with celiac, but I can tell you that San Diego is a beautiful city with the best weather in the country. It's a lot more crowded than... -
ARCHIVED Hot Enough For You?
bartfull replied to Darn210's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm not sure if you knew about this, but there is a website, inciweb.org, where you can get the latest updates. That is the site one of our firefighters told me to go to. The local newspaper here is useless so that's where I get my info. -
ARCHIVED How Do You Do A Food Challenge For Corn?
bartfull replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Corn IS in everything. Google corn allergy and you will find quite a few forums and other sites that can help. I will tell you that most of the time if you see citric acid in the ingredients, it is from corn. The citrus wash they use on bagged salads and baby carrots is from corn. (That means if you get a salad at a restaurant, you have to ask if they use... -
ARCHIVED Hot Enough For You?
bartfull replied to Darn210's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Purple, I know just what you're going through. It's really scary. Just keep your go-bag by the door, load up anything that the heat from the car won't hurt, and pray alot. We've still got to get through August and September yet, and there's no rain in sight. Keep us updated if you can, and good luck! -
ARCHIVED Does This Really Get Better?
bartfull replied to FruitEnthusiast's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, yes, yes!! It DOES get better. Keep yourself on a very bland, whole foods diet. Keep a food diary. Go organic wherever possible. Give yourself time to heal. Along the way it will seem like you have to keep dropping foods to the point you'll be afraid you soon won't be able to eat anything, but if you can keep yourself away from gluten and other offending... -
SUCCESS!!!!!
-
Because of my corn intolerance all breads have been off limits to me. But after taking two day's worth of corn filled antibiotics and NOT reacting to them I knew that the very first thing I would try was some Udi's. I hadn't planned on doing this until October, but a tourist came through and we got to talking. She has celiac too, and she had never tried Udi...

ARCHIVED Bending To A Near Break
bartfull replied to Razzle Dazzle Brazell's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Razzle, I'm sorry you are feeling so stressed. I know how you feel because I was in the same boat. But I know you haven't been at it for very long and I would bet you are still healing and that is why you are reacting to so many things. Honestly, if everyone who is first diagnosed or who first suspects celiac could just stick to organic whole foods for a... -
ARCHIVED Friends With Psoriasis
bartfull replied to Razzle Dazzle Brazell's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Mom used to tell a story about HER Mom when she first got married. She was making a cake for my grandfather's lunches and discovered she was out of vanilla. She substituted with some type of laxative that had a sweet taste, thinking it was such a small amount, and cooking would probably kill the laxative properties anyway. My poor grandfather came home... -
ARCHIVED Mccormicks Paprika
bartfull replied to 123glldd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wendy, I couldn't make any sense out of the things that bothered me either. At two months, no, you are probably not healed yet. When I was two months in the lost of foods that bothered me was huge. Even iceburg lettuce gave me D. Yet I could spice up my rice with rosemary or sage and had no problems. The best advice I could give you is to stick to whole... -
ARCHIVED Friends With Psoriasis
bartfull replied to Razzle Dazzle Brazell's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'M SORRY! My mistake. You are right, it is baking POWDER that has corn, not baking soda. (I have always gotten those two mixed up. Have I told you about the biscuits I made using soda instead of powder? One bite and you knew I had made a mistake! Holy cow, they were so bad that even after spitting it out and rinsing your mouth and brushing your teeth, the... -
ARCHIVED Losing Hope...
bartfull replied to kswan08's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think there are plenty of gluten-free vitamins out there. I haven't found one yet that is corn-free too, so I have been eating lots of sweet potaotes and avocados. They are both packed with vitamins. Now that my corn problem seems to have subsided, I will be going to the healthfood store tomorrow to see if I can find one that is simply gluten-free and... -
ARCHIVED Losing Hope...
bartfull replied to kswan08's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The list of foods that bothered me continued to grow for the first year. I was afraid that eventually I would not be able to eat anything! But after a year of living on SUCH a limited diet I finally healed enough to start adding things back. I think I mentioned before that it helped to eat only organic foods for a while because I was even reacting to pesticide... -
ARCHIVED How To Deal With Celiac Before You Know You Have It!
bartfull replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Me neither. I KNEW I had it, but was in denial. Mom had it and I was very familiar with celiac. I knew the odds were against me but I was too lazy to give up my junk food. I kept telling myself it was just that I had damaged my gut with too much alcohol. Kept telling myself the psoriasis was just my bad luck. I kept telling myself the lack of energy and brain... -
ARCHIVED Hot Enough For You?
bartfull replied to Darn210's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It got down to 50 last night and it rained! High of 81 today!! Low of 50 again tonight. And by tomorrow it's supposed to go back up to 95. -
ARCHIVED Not Sure If Glutened Or A Virus
bartfull replied to 123glldd's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
But then again, normally our temperatures fluctuate throughout the day. 98.6 is just an AVERAGE. If I'm not mistaken, 99.2 COULD just be normal for you at this time of day. -
ARCHIVED One More Thing
bartfull replied to Razzle Dazzle Brazell's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
The purple gloves seem to fit better anyway. And don't think of them as Barney gloves. Think of them as orchid gloves. They really are pretty. -
ARCHIVED One More Thing
bartfull replied to Razzle Dazzle Brazell's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
OUCH! Have you reacted to any other vinyl? Like wearing shorts and sitting on the seat in your car? (Double ouch!) There is vinyl everywhere! I'm wondering (and I really have no idea) if those gloves have corn in them. I know the hard plastics do but maybe they're using it in soft plastic now too? -
ARCHIVED Product Warning - Marked Gluten Free
bartfull replied to RonSchon's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
George Foreman grill. Plain boneless chicken breasts from the meat counter. 10 to 15 minutes on the George. Quick, easy, no additives, and they taste better. I have learned that the plainer, the better. The less processed, the better. If I want to spice something up I do it myself. And for the sake of convenience I cook several at once. I can either... -
ARCHIVED Interesting Observation - Coffee
bartfull replied to troykm's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I know I sound like those people who say they'd die if they couldn't have bread, but I will never give up my coffee! Nectar of the Gods! Greatest "invention" mankind has ever come up with! My reason for getting up in the morning! First thing on my list when I say my prayer of thanks every day! What makes life worth living! Um...can you tell I like the... -

ARCHIVED My 82-Year-Old Mother's Results From Going Gluten Free...
bartfull replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Give her a big hug from me. I'm so glad she's feeling better. And you know, I bet she doesn't see herself as old - she just sees herself as HER. Remember when you were in first grade you would look at the "big kids" (sixth graders) and wonder what you would be like when YOU were a big kid? And when you got there, you were still just you. My wish for... -
I had early menopause. By the time I was 42 my periods had stopped completely. The hot flashes lasted over ten years and to be honest, even at 58 I still get them once in a while. I think there was a thread here several months ago about this, and if I remember correctly quite a few of us have gone through this. I believe, at least from anecdotal evidence...

ARCHIVED Irishheart, Come Home!
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thanks, Jersey! No wonder I didn't see it - it was in the cooking forum, and as everybody knows by now, I am the world's worst cook! -
IrishHeart, I haven't seen you here for a few days now. I'm a bit worried. Are you OK? I miss you! You have done so much for me and I need to thank you again. Everyone here has been so helpful, but you are the one who has given me the most unjudgemental comfort and understanding. To me, you are the "face" of celiac.com. I have found it easier to talk...
