  1. In the beginning, when it comes to baking, I suggest a mix. It helps you learn what gluten-free can be and the types of flour mixes you like (mixes greatly influence taste). I like King Arthur mixes. Their chocolate cake mix is so good I wouldn't try to make a replacement. If you want something unique, try to stick with naturally low gluten or gluten...
  2. It may be quite a few or any of the above mentioned. Have you tried an oral antihistimine? I ask because I am allergic to quite a few plants and if I play with them, and in particular, if one penetrates my skin I get an all-over body reaction that feels like a cold or flu, along with pain and numbness in my hands (what has been playing with the plants...
  3. I tried their pizza crust and wasn't nuts about it. But I am picky about crust and I think I'll only be happy with a homemade yeast crust I roll out super thin. I tried their cocoa wafers and they were one million times better than Glutino. they may be usable for fondue - haven't tried it yet. Glutino wafers aren't food. I put them in the category with...
  4. I think you are making responsible, adult changes to improve your health and life. Excellent. Just a word about chiropractor v. massage... A good masseuse makes any massage from a chiropractor look like a 5 year-old banging on a drum. You may need a good massage therapist, and quite frankly I only know of ONE that was found in a chiro's office. Look...
  5. Yes, the only "free" is gluten-free and lactose. Sorry. My store charged $5.50 for the 4-pack. I have seen the loaves of Schar bread at another store but didn't check the price or buy them. They are a pricey addiction, but I think I will keep a few bags.
  6. Does he get sick from eating it? That may be your only hope. I bet $ he'll start trading for gluten snacks with his homemade gluten-free food. Just to prove he can, if nothing else. He's 13.....
  7. Well, we tried the strips last night. The snoring was bad at all - but some nights he's worse than others so who knows. My earplugs fell out in the middle of the night...so I'll need different ones if they prove to be a solution. I did wake up once - I think I was having a hot flash or had too many blankets. Couldn't go back to sleep easily so I turned...
  8. I believe Ttg is a measure of intestinal damage? It sounds like you've got quite a bit of healing to do - going by your post, not the Ttg. There's another thread here about an elevated Ttg in presence of other normal Celiac tests.
  9. I found them in the freezer at the health food store, and tossed them in my freezer. The date on them (this store puts a date on their products of when they received them) was this month. The package says to store at room temp until the best by date (April 13, 2012 in this case). After opening store in fridge for 5 days.
  10. The texture was excellent. I'm not joking. They even felt like a roll when you mashed on the outside. I couldn't believe it. Seriously. I think the brown n serve thing helps...I didn't try one cold (we ate them all). I liked their spaghetti, too. Hubs gave it a big thumbs up, also.
  11. Yes and yes and yes. You don't know they are gluten-free EXCEPT if they get wet (then they do the gluten texture/crumble/dissolve thing) - just don't take a big bite and a big swig of water. The texture is unbelievable. I'm not kidding. They do this thing where they wrap the dough around, so some of them have a "pocket". They aren't as airy as gluten...
  12. I hope he directs some of the biting sarcasm at that dang roommate. Anyway, something I mentioned once in jest here was a "safe word" that either party can use when feeling abused by gluten (him by the physiological effects and as a warning, and you as a "back off, turkey! warning). Anyway, I joked about it with my hub and he immediately agreed it could...
  13. Oh wow. Bread. It tastes like real bread. Texture is PERFECT. Gluten eaters loved them. I'm in love. Seriously. Open Original Shared Link
  14. No, not unless you consider my hubs similarly "diseased" by his ex and son. Which quite frankly , he was. My mother did ask me if I was sure if I could do it...and many times later, as The Nut Job interfered in our lives - she asked many more times. Eventually, it worked out for us (kids grow up and coparenting with an ex is no longer necessary). Wow,...
  15. Well, I've had great support from my husband. My son is coming around (he's 9) especially since he's starting to realize this could include him, too. My parents are supportive but refuse testing. That said, my mother fiddles with gluten-free. I did tell one cousin and one aunt about my dx after they were scheduled for gallbladder surgery. One didn't...
  16. Actually that's quite a bit more than "a tad" considering better doctors use 3 as the upper limit and good thyroid docs want it in the 1's. That may be your cause for the high Ttg, especially if his TPO comes back elevated.
  17. We talked about it last night... We're going to try the strips and earplugs and probably a mouth guard, and take it from there. He's open to more energy and if better sleep (less snoring) does it he's probably in board. A CPAP would be difficult for frequent business travel, no? He should be home in 2 hours! Yay!
  18. Great link. I've said it before and I'll scream it from the rooftops...the problems are the tests. I have an easier time accepting this since I have thyroid disease, which is notorious for bad tests.
  19. Good luck to all of you. You may want to introduce yourself as "in Getmany" - I think there are a few posters here in Germany also. May be able to give you hints.
  20. I love your choices of comparisons, especially given the recent press.
  21. Another thing to consider is adults are generally better at cleaning up, being careful about cc. My son will eat crackers, crumbs all over the place (and in my bed)...and they were GOLDFISH crackers.... Adults would generally act with more care. But kids may sneak the gluteny food or eat without checking (not that adults don't....).
  22. You know, there's almost always something else going on when things like this come up, but I digress... Since your family can't agree on food, why not do something else that doesn't involve food? Doesn't have to be a big thing, doesn't have to involve your sister - just you and your mom.
