ARCHIVED Reading Labels
Adalaide replied to ramdr's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Keep in mind that this does not apply to barley, rye or oats. So even if the package has a "contains" statement and does not list wheat, you will still have to read the individual ingredients to rule out other sources of gluten. -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I just didn't feel like doing anything today and my husband wanted pizza so it all worked out. We went and picked up a pizza for him somewhere then went somewhere else for me. I had vetted them over the phone previously and kind of just stored the info for later when I finally felt like a pizza. It was a pretty great price for a gluten free pizza, 12 bucks... -
ARCHIVED Cooking Spray?
Adalaide replied to doalltheyoga's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have read the labels on a few, although I do not remember the brands that say right on them that they may contain traces of wheat. I now stick exclusively to PAM. I've thought about buying one of those refill yourself sprayers but I always thought they'd be so much more expensive. I guess I can just get once since they're so cheap. -
ARCHIVED Spaghetti Sauces Home Made
Adalaide replied to Linda422's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm sharing this only because it was shared with me. Love2travel shared this with me when I was desperate. I love how super easy it is too. Cook some veggies, throw some meat at it, add everything else. Then just leave it alone. I did also find youtube videos of him making the sauce, because who doesn't need a little Mario Batali in their lives? Open Original... -
ARCHIVED Pumpkin Spice Cookies
Adalaide replied to kareng's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Words can not describe how in love with you I am right now! I keep seeing these at the front of every grocery store I walk in and I resent every non-celiac person in existence for their ability to eat them. -
I also just use the butts of my bread. (Yeah, I call them bread butts.) I just throw them in the blender or food processor. I use them for meatballs or meatloaf or mac & cheese, those sorts of things. I've never done something that is breaded exactly so I don't have experience with that although I don't see why they wouldn't be perfectly acceptable.

I used to be dear friends with a family that owned a small coffee shop. The desserts were all made in the back kitchen and the coffees and teas were all made out front right in front of you, absolutely no risk there. There is no way in hell I will eat a fruit salad in a place that handles gluten. That is far riskier than ordering a drink unless you grill...

ARCHIVED "silent" Migraines - What To Watch For?
Adalaide replied to Pegleg84's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I do get migraines, but also have an entirely separate condition that comes and goes and is entirely impacted by diet. Pseudotumor cerebri. It isn't scary at all, just too much pressure and can make you feel like there is too much pressure in your head, causes all sorts of visual disturbances (how I got diagnosed, the Doctors at the ER thought I was having... -
You can check the Torani website to see which flavors contain gluten, but the list is extremely short and if you order coffees flavored with those it won't be a problem. I don't drink coffee myself but love to indulge in a nice rooibos chai latte occasionally. If you screen places ahead of time you won't have any issues when you go. You can quickly and...

I think the coffee place is a great idea. I agree that a simple "I don't eat sweets" and a fancy coffee or tea should do the trick.

ARCHIVED Sharing My Gluten Free With A Gluten Eater
Adalaide replied to Angel M's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If I was being constantly told that my gluten free food is icky I'd have a far different point of view. Instead of always offering, like I do, I'm pretty sure that I'd be stabbing people with forks. Where do they get off telling us that our delicious food sucks? I don't eat anything icky and I'd put up with that only so long before I shot back with a "no... -
ARCHIVED Vick's Vaporub
Adalaide replied to 123glldd's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Depending on where you are putting it I may or may not worry about it. But because it is Vicks and because some of their products do contain gluten, if you are truly worried I would call and confirm that it is processed in a gluten free facility. My mother used to rub it on my little brother's chest at bedtime when he got super sick in the winters. I do know... -
ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Ideas...

Also, mailing gravy will probably be a little messy. You can just come over for Thanksgiving. The more the merrier. -
ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Ideas...
Adalaide replied to DavinaRN's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Two things make amazing gravy. First, you have to start with good drippings from meat that was well seasoned. Check? Okey dokey. Throw it all in a pan and turn it up nice and high so it gets to a rolling boil. Taste. Is it good and salty? No. Add salt, liberally. You're already making gravy, this is not the time to be worried about your ticker. Taste and... -
ARCHIVED Thanksgiving Ideas...
Adalaide replied to DavinaRN's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This will be my first gluten free Thanksgiving. I've gotten accustomed to the way my husband's family is not nearly as family oriented as mine is around holidays. Anyway, I'm the only person in the family willing (or apparently knowledgeable or capable) of cooking for an army of people. I grew up helping my grammy prepare holiday meals for about 22, that... -

Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yesterday I picked up a really nice rack of pork ribs at half price, so that's supper. I got a call rousing me out of bed at the crack of 10 this morning calling me in to sub the afternoon class, which means they'll have exactly enough time all wrapped up cozy in their rub before being baked. I think I have a buttercup squash laying around somewhere to cook... -
ARCHIVED Cooking Equipment
Adalaide replied to DavinaRN's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes. There are some things like wood, cutting boards, and plastic that can be damaged by heat in the microwave or on the stove (ever examined the edge of a spatula) that no amount of cleanliness will de-gluten. -

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Okay, so this won't sound like it all goes together but it's all stuff that sounded good at the time. Mashed squash because apparently my husband just doesn't like it and I just can't get enough. Salads because we need to be eating salads. And pizza burgers. I was going to have a regular old cheeseburger until I was looking in my fridge and saw my fresh mozzarella... -
Well the shopping is taken care of. He always knows what to get me. GIRAFFES!!! He does joke though about buying me a chia pet now that I won't shut up about Udi's chia bread. OMG... time to enforce rule #8. Thanks for the post on the neuropathy, and I wish I could blame it on celiac. I have issues with this myself which sucks. The reason his doctor was...

Thanks guys! Mostly I needed to just let it all out, as I'm sure you're all familiar with. It's simple really. Without a positive (negative really) reaction to gluten after a couple of months gluten free, or biopsy/test results saying celiac, he will not continue to stay gluten free. He is not going to go free of 600 things trying to figure out if he...

Since discovering that squash is in fact awesome I am seeing which ones I like best before stocking up for the winter. Tonight is oven roasted delicata with lemon and herb pork tenderloin and I'll either have some mashed taters and gravy or some jasmine rice with it. Since my husband won't go near either of those I think I may force feed him some sweet potato... -
Mostly the hard part is having to be the kissing police. I shouldn't have to put my hands up and tell him to go brush his teeth when he gets home from work. I just isn't fair! Why can't I just kiss my husband like a normal human being?

ARCHIVED Sharing My Gluten Free With A Gluten Eater
Adalaide replied to Angel M's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I've been gluten free for 9 months myself. I spent the past couple months married to a gluten free husband. Two days ago that changed and I find myself again married to a gluten eater. We will be staying more or less gluten free at home so that isn't an issue, but he will be eating gluten outside the house. Even early on when I was very emotional I never... -
So, after several months gluten free it was finally time for my husband to dive in and see how sick he got eating gluten. We saw his endochrinologist on Monday who said that since being gluten free hasn't relieved any of his symptoms there is no reason for him to continue on a gluten free diet. So, first things first he went straight to Pizza Hut on the way...
