The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Adalaide replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Way ahead of you. I headed to the store for a salad, grabbed an asian pear and settled in with those and some walnuts. (not candied but life can't be perfect) Drizzled it with the SMALLEST reasonable amount of balsamic vinaigrette and a little extra olive oil. I seriously think vinegar hates me but not putting any on would have been a crime. I still have... -
ARCHIVED What Does Certified Gluten-Free Really Mean?

I should also have pointed out, that not everyone says who they are certified through but expect us to be familiar with the logos of each of the three organizations. I suggest being familiar with these (and each of their general guidelines) so you can see a logo and say to yourself hey, I'm comfortable with that... or not. -

Ok, so I'm a little messed up to want to do this and I'm sure someone needs to slap me but I can't help myself. I was at the store yesterday and they had fresh blueberry vanilla goat cheese on sale for an incredible price. So I bought it, having no clue what the heck to do with it. Now I am thinking it would make a killer grilled cheese. I don't know anything... -
ARCHIVED Goya Canned Beans
Adalaide replied to Gfresh404's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was unaware of this since I have no experience growing dried beans. I thought they were the same as lentils, limas, or peas which I do have experience growing and see dried. Those you pick fresh and plump. (As well as some other types of beans I have experience with that I haven't seen dried.) It is still, and always has been, my opinion that when in... -
ARCHIVED Dandy Blend Coffee Substitute

Yes, it is a problem that has been frequently discussed here. Many react to these products, and either call the company and come here flamin' pissed or simply come here confused about why they are getting sick from these products when other rice/soy doesn't bother them. -

My husband wouldn't wear a pink shirt if it would stop the apocalypse. I have tried all sorts of bribery to get him in a pink shirt, and it just is not going to happen. Which is tragic because he would look incredible in a deep, bright pink. You are so incredibly lucky! I am lucky though that mine will wait for interminably long times while I drag him to... -

Oh, I totally get the not a frilly girly girl thing. I thought for a long time I could be one of those. I'm just... not, or rather I am... or, well you get it. I like dresses and bows and lace and (gasp!) corsets. At this point I am counting pounds until I can reasonably justify spending the several hundred dollars on one. I have never in my life been so... -

I am a girly girl. Like, super girly girl. I still agree that pantyhose are one of the most gawd-awful creations ever to grace the earth. I would not feel a shred of sympathy if the person who invented them was strangled with a pair by some deranged woman mad as hell about them. Sounds like you have an absolutely splendid Saturday coming up. I'm sure... -
ARCHIVED Happy Spring, Fellow Gardeners!
Adalaide replied to notme's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Aren't weeds what grows best in every garden? I somehow had a weed in one of my pots last week. They are sneaky suckers! I'm not the histamine know-it-all... but I do know I did spring without strawberries because of it. There are also like a bazillion other delicious and supposedly healthy things I am not eating. Honestly if I had to choose between... -

I could stand to have the sheets on my beds changed wench. Yesterday I was incredibly stupid. I goofed off in the morning just long enough to be out in the sun when I went out to weed. It didn't end well. It also did not get me off the hook from needing to pick up my peppers, cantaloupe and watermelon from the garden store. I at least had the sense... -

Open Original Shared Link Unless the package states on it which of the organizations it has obtained the certification through, I always assume that they are simply blowing smoke up my skirt and are so completely clueless as to what they are talking about and so interested in selling a product that they are incapable of manufacturing a safe product because... -
ARCHIVED Dandy Blend Coffee Substitute
Adalaide replied to Ciel121's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Repeated research shows that the traditional tests for gluten do not appropriately detect barley gluten and show far less than is actually present once a test that will detect it is done. This means that the tests that have been done showing less than 5 ppm are completely worthless. For what it is worth, I wouldn't touch that crap with a 10 foot pole. I also... -
ARCHIVED Pizza Sauce From Scratch
Adalaide replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I guess maybe it was cause I only had a half dozen tomatoes or so, but it didn't really take long for mine to be saucy. I took them out of the oven when they were getting golden or brown on top and cooked them on medium with no lid for a few hours. The house really did smell amazing. It never occurred to me to skim their liquid, I don't think I would. You... -
That looks suspiciously like an empty fridge, not a gluteny fridge as you described. At any rate, if you feel like your attitude is that you can just disregard your disease at any point just because you feel like it I'm not sure what you want from us here. None of us will support that attitude, but if you need help or support in being gluten free we are...

ARCHIVED Goya Canned Beans
Adalaide replied to Gfresh404's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Why would they dry the beans... and then rehydrate them? That just seems silly and pointless. It is far more cost effective to just can them while they are still fresh instead of drying them, then re-hydrating them which would be a complete and total waste of money. -
Also, imo when discussing fast food we are talking about the highest possible risk being wheat. Things like barley and rye are not going to be serious offenders here outside of the possibility of a specialty fast food place having malt vinegar for fries, with rare exception of course. We should also never be walking in uneducated without knowing exactly what...

Firefox has a built in spell check, making it the only browser I will use. (Of course, it doesn't know the difference between a macaroon and a macaron making me look like a complete moron.)

After only two weeks, you're going to get a lot of people saying that this early you simply need to let your body heal without taking unnecessary risks like eating out. You will find that your body may randomly and for no apparent reason whatsoever have wonky symptoms in the early stages. The symptoms you describe could be a result of eating a bunch of deep...

ARCHIVED New Here, Not New To gluten-free, But Ready To Eat gluten-free...please Don't Judge!
Adalaide replied to RaeDawnMarie721's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I could not agree more. Get tested for celiac. Since you say yourself that you lack the motivation and will continue to lack it to stay gluten free, there is nothing like the threat of the complications of celiac to keep you on the straight and narrow. Keep in mind though that it has only been since last year that the medical community truly recognizes nonceliac... -
ARCHIVED Pizza Sauce From Scratch
Adalaide replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Last time I had pizza I roasted my tomatoes in the oven with garlic and olive oil. After that I pulled off their skin (more or less) diced them up, took a masher to it all until it was a chunky slop and cooked it until it was thick and smelled like heaven. That is what I used as my sauce on my pizza. And it was positively divine. I didn't read this anywhere... -
ARCHIVED Do I Need To Cover Food In The Oven?
Adalaide replied to nostalgic's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
omg my husband is like this too! He does those frozen pizza things that say to cook right on the rack. Then I have to remember to switch the racks if I have something to bake that needs to be uncovered in the middle. I always just give the racks a quicky scrub if I'm going to be doing something like cookies or w/e. (Since it involves using both racks and... -
ARCHIVED Thankful For Swedish Fish
Adalaide replied to GlutenStinks15's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sign me up for Jelly Belly and Swedish Fish please! I remember an early day in my diagnosis I was subbing a class and at lunch time I was wandering around the bookstore when I went in to buy a drink just staring at all the snacks and candy I couldn't have. Then I saw fish. It was almost like I heard angels singing when I flipped the package over. -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed- Dealing With Rude Comments
Adalaide replied to eblue's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
By far the worst comment I get (which is recurring) is from someone who has a lymphoma associated with celiac and a raging family medical history that point to celiac in about a million ways. She has told me over and over that if she had to deal with what I deal with she would just eat whatever she wants and wait to die. Well... she's in luck I guess because... -

ARCHIVED Dealing With Cruddy People While Out.....

I have never ordered food before inquiring about how that food will be prepared for me safely. At any point that I have felt uncomfortable I have left. If I had ever been treated as if asking as to whether or not my food could be prepared safely were some sort of imposition (especially by the manager!) I would not hesitate to cause a small scene. I am very...
