ARCHIVED Can We Talk About Sex?
aikiducky replied to kschauer's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'd like to chime in on this part a little. We live abroad as well (Finnish, living in Holland), so I've gone through some of the same process that you are going through. Moving to another country is always very stressful, even when it goes perfectly. It's never going to be exactly like you thought it would be. Just like any major life change (like... -
ARCHIVED I Am Very Confused About Celaic Disease In General.
aikiducky replied to pandaman's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Seriously, if you've only been gluten free for one and a half months, it could very well be just simply a case of your intestines not being healed completely. It can take a couple years to heal! Be nice to your gut and don't eat very hard to digest stuff for a while, don't eat huge portions but just enough that you can still digest it, maybe that is all... -
ARCHIVED Dairy Intolerance Symptoms Besides Gi Issues
aikiducky replied to munchkinette's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
If it feels like lactase sometimes helps, maybe it's a dosage problem? It can also depend on timing, because obviously the lactase and lactose have to be in the same place at the same time in order for the lactose to be broken up. You can safely take more lactase than most packages recommend as far as I know. Btw, soy gives me terrible acne. As... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerant And Weight Gain?
aikiducky replied to angelaw's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
After hanging around here for a few years now, I nowadays always tell people to get all the possible testing done before trying a gluten free diet. That means a celiac blood test panel: Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgA Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgG Anti-Endomysial (EMA) IgA Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) Total Serum IgA AND a biopsy of the small intestine... -
ARCHIVED Saw The Doctor Yesterday & Thank You For Your Support!
aikiducky replied to TracyB's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just a heads up that the only one of those tests that tests specifically for celiac is the endomysial antibody, and that one can be used to rule celiac in but not to rule it out. It can give a false negative if your intestine isn't damaged enough. So if it comes back negative, you might need to talk with your doctor about further testing. Pauliina -

ARCHIVED Should I Eat Gluten Before Testing?
aikiducky replied to driedupfish's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It depends a lot on how long you have been gluten free. The usual recommendation is that you should have been eating something like the equivalent of three-four slices of bread for at least three months before the tests, but if you've only been gluten free for a couple weeks it's probably enough to just start eating gluten now. If it's been longer I'm afraid... -
If you suspect you're casein intolerant, you should try cutting out all dairy products for a while. I know it's a pain, but that might well be keeping you feeling tired, I know if I would have dairy even just now and then I wouldn't be getting out of bed. It can also make you slightly depressed. I agree with the previous posters - you don't really have very convincing proof for yourself that you have celiac, and since it doesn't make a lot of difference in how you feel, it would be better to go back on gluten and get thoroughly tested. Make sure you have eaten a good amount of gluten for at least a few month before you go for the tests, so you don...

ARCHIVED Coffee, Wine, Balsamic Vinegar Processed With Gluten!
aikiducky replied to Peggy Anne's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
The only thing European wine makers have to warn about on labels is sulphites as far as I know. There is discussion about requiring them to warn about other allergens but that's not in effect yet I think. I haven't found much info about using gluten as a fining agent, and I doubt that it would be used much, but casein is used, that's not a myth or anything... -
ARCHIVED Frustrated With Mom
aikiducky replied to BelievinMiracles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It could be that your mom still hopes secretly that it will be temporary, simply because she is your mom and doesn't want to think that you might have a life long strict diet to look forward to. You know? Give it some time and it might be that you both start to feel better about the whole thing. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Besan Flour, Bother Anyone?
aikiducky replied to Eric-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm with David, to me it sounds like some kind of cc issue in the baking of the bread, rather than the flour itself? Or cc in general at the restaurant, wouldn't be that surprising. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Confused. Does He Not Have Celiac?
aikiducky replied to kaiess's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Maybe they could run an Ema (endomysial antibody) test plus the tTg, the Ema is as far as I know very specific for celiac, meaning if it is positive it is very unlikely to be anything else. It's a blood test so it shouldn't be too difficult or invasive to do. Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Meal/snack Ideas Please!
aikiducky replied to Janiney's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just a little note that goats milk does have lactose. Some people who are allergic or intolerant to cows milk protein are able to tolerate goats milk better, but for lactose (milk sugar) intolerance it really doesn't make much difference. Of course, hard cheeses have very little lactose anyway, that would also go for a well matured goats milk cheese. Pauliina -
This is more or less the trick I use as well. I see gluten stuff as something that looks nice and smells nice, but that isn't meant for consumption. Just like I don't go around eating roses either. I think you could probably train yourself to think this way, if you start to tell yourself every time you see gluten food "that isn't food" it should start...

ARCHIVED Lets Talk About Coffee Filter Please!
aikiducky replied to DebNC84's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As far as I know, casein and egg white are not uncommon in fining wine. So for someone with additional intolerances, wine could possibly give trouble. ARCHIVED How Are You Preparing For The Economic Collapse?
aikiducky replied to GregC's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
What I'd recommend for anyone is that you also make sure your finances are "stocked" for at least a couple months ahead (even better, half a year), that is, that you always keep a couple months expenses worth of money somewhere that you can access easily. In case of unemployment, or a health problem or accident of some kind, or just the unexpected household... -

ARCHIVED Eating Enough Post Diagnosis
aikiducky replied to Knightley's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you want to add more carbs to your diet but not bake, how about cooking some rice, quinoa, gluten free pasta, potatoes, sweet potatoes? Pancakes made with corn, buckwheat, rice etc flour? A safe brand of tortilla chips? Pauliina -
ARCHIVED Accidentally Glutenized?
aikiducky replied to SisterSisto's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Flour is really really difficult to work with without getting at least some in the air, from where it will land where it may. If you inhale flour dust, you'll also swallow some of it. The good news is that you can bake most recipes gluten free without big problems, a lot of recipes will work just like that just replace the wheat flour with a gluten... -
ARCHIVED Grain Intolerant, Dairy Intolerant, Legume Intolerant, Now Meat? Oh No...
aikiducky replied to Pyro's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've noticed that I often go in cycles when it comes to certain foods. I'll eat more protein heavy for a while and then for a while I really don't feel like I need it that much but I really start to crave rice and root veggies and other carbs. It seems that as long as I eat more or less what my body is asking for i feel pretty good! So maybe not freak out... -
ARCHIVED Where Does It All Go?
aikiducky replied to LuvMoosic4life's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
No, really, the little that you do poop is all that is left of your food after the usable parts are absorbed. What makes for more volume is more water in the poop plus more discarded gut bacteria. It might be that you don't have a very sturdy gut flora right now. And since thing are moving along so slowly, the water gets reabsorbed. I think. It kinda... -
ARCHIVED I Am New Here, Awaiting Test Results.
aikiducky replied to Presto's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your doctor is thinking of antibodies against some diseases that don't go away and give immunity for a long time. Gluten antibodies are different. They do disappear from the blood if there is no gluten entering the system. Though some people do show a weak positive even after two years on the diet, if they had a very high antibody count to start with. ... -
ARCHIVED Help! I Am Soooo Confused!
aikiducky replied to Gina C.'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You said you have been gluten free for three months now? How are you feeling now? Are you looking to get tested to keep yourself motivated on the diet, or are you having continued symptoms that aren't getting better? I think Enterolab even says on their website that they cannot diagnose celiac, only show if you react to gluten in some way or another... -
The different explanations I've read about around here: endoscopy looks for damage in the small intestine. That damage doesn't develop overnight. So it is possible that if you haven't been ill for very long, that you just haven't developed enough damage to be seen yet. In that case a repeat endoscopy in a couple years might give a different result. Another...
