  1. I'd also vote for staying on gluten until the biopsy. You have a chance now to get a definitive diagnosis, don't risk it. You might end up with a borderline result which will either lead to a lot of discussion or to continued testing. I'd stay on gluten until the biopsy, then go gluten free immediately afterwards since you already know you feel better when...
  2. Kifert, absolutely it makes sense, especially if you're going to be having a colonoscopy anyway. Bloodtests aren't all that reliable, they are only reliably positive in people who have extensive damage to their intestines. If you are in the earlier stages of celiac your blood test might be a false negative but the endoscopy might find some damage. Ask them...
  3. I think you're right to be concerned. Plus I think your doctor wasn't really well informed about the relevance of IgA deficiency on celiac testing. Basically all the tests apart from the Igg test were useless for your daughter since as you said yourself they would always be in the normal range however sick she might be. I think it's a good idea to see a gastro...
  4. At the very least really go to the trouble of explaining to the restaurant about cross contamination. Just ordering something off the menu hoping it will be all right isn't going to be enough. While everyone is getting seated, go and have a quiet word with the manager about your restrictions, so you can come up with a safe alternative for you. I still...
  5. Something that has been discussed here on this board before is that a lot of people seem to be hypoglycemic when they first start gluten free. It seems to even out after a few months on the diet. If you start shaking when your hungry and crave a quick energy fix (sugar) that could point to hypoglycemia. Do you get hungry very often, like after a couple...
  6. My recovery period from gluten is normally two weeks, so for me one week would not be longer than usual. Just in case, are the rice cakes for sure safe? Some rice cakes can be cross contaminated. Could be that this was a bigger than normal glutening and it'll take a bit longer than normal to get over? Don't really have an answer but I hope...
  7. Nope, they're "umbellifers". Enjoy! Pauliina
  8. Congratulations! Pauliina
  9. Jen, have a look at Open Original Shared Link and you'll find lots and lots of gluten free products. There's also a section for restaurants that can accommodate a gluten free customer. Welcome to the board, and to Holland. Hi Lirio! I'm the same Pauliina from the coeliakie forum. Pauliina
  10. In the future, when you almost wimp out again... think about this post and how upset you were with yourself afterwards for not standing up to the doctor. You won't wimp out of awkward situations so easily if you remember that. In social situations, you just need to open your mouth and explain, and explain, and explain. It gets easier after a while, because...
  11. Jami, I just read your other thread, about denial.... doesn't it scare you at all that this kind of thing happens to your ability to think? You can add a third symptom to your list! My main motivation in staying strictly gluten free is the number gluten does on my head. I could live with the digestive symptoms, but I hate the way I feel if I accidentally...
  12. My opinion - it would be ok to not go this year, but make up your mind to go next year. By that time you'll have gotten used to the life change and it won't be so hard. But you really don't need to force yourself to do it all immediately I think. Pauliina
  13. Nancy, it's quite common to feel bad when you first go gluten free. Some people have a sort of withdrawal period. What I also think might be going on is you must remember that the reaction to gluten is an immune reaction. Your immune system can keep going on even after you've removed gluten for a while, once the reaction has been triggered it will run it...
  14. My experience with a gluten challenge lasted exactly one day, I got so sick that I just couldn't go on with it. so I'm gluten free but undiagnosed, for three and a half years now. But I've also read about a lot of people here who did do the challenge, got somewhat sick but not too unbearable. It's a gamble and really you'll only know by trying. It's...
  15. Is it possible that your husband is trying, in his somewhat clumsy guy way, to make you more comfortable about this receptionist? Those weren't actually flattering remarks about her. If that's the case it's a good idea to reward him even so. I think that's been one of the big things in our marriage that we've learned to reward each other for even...
  16. If your household isn't completely gluten free your house is also "facility that processes wheat". Of course in your own home it's easier control how clean it is, with manufacturers you can only hope. I try to follow sound common sense, if the same manufacturer makes a product that also only has traces of gluten, then the chance of cross contamination...
  17. Yes this kind of cross contamination will keep making you sick, so you need to talk about it. It might be awkward at first but it really is necessary for your health, there's just no way around that. When I'm at my parents place, I have my own margarine tub, jam, etc. with stickers on them with my name. And we separate the counter tops, one side is the...
  18. Ain't that the truth... Pauliina 3,5 years gluten free, and couldn't have imagined the difference even a year ago...
  19. I'm gluten, dairy, egg, nightshade and legume free. Typical daily menu could be something like: Breakfast: Cornflakes with apple sauce and coconut milk, a banana, tea Lunch: Salad with endive, ice berg, carrots, olives, avocado, tuna/chicken/other fish, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and TEA Dinner: Stir fry with three different veg plus a meat...
  20. Yes I think this kind of cravings are a sign that there's a nutrient that you're low on, so you start to crave foods that have that nutrient. A good example is magnesium and chocolate - or in my case I ate tons of raisins for a while, also for magnesium. Nuts have good oils and protein, so an alternative could be fatty fish like sardines and mackerel...
  21. The IgA and IgG tests are test for antibodies against gliadin which is a part of gluten. If you're sensitive to gluten your body produces antibodies against it. The IgG is often the first one to go up but there's some doubt about it's reliableness. I don't remember exactly why, I think it might have been that it can be elevated after and infection as well...
  22. Don't worry. It's almost inevitable that somewhere along the way you'll get glutened from somewhere, and then you'll remember why you're doing it again. Seriously though, I remember feeling like that around the same time, two months into the diet. It's like the previous poster said, try to think back to how sick you were, and remind yourself that...
  23. One more thing - if the ingredients are gluten free, it's also quite possible that it actually is zero gluten. Zero is less than 20 ppm... but they wouldn't put zero on the box because it's too hard to prove. Pauliina
  24. Maybe not a fun thing, but useful in other ways - clean the house together. You get it done much quicker, you get to be together, and afterwards you have a clean house. Set a regular time like Saturday morning or something, and you don't have to worry about it the rest of the week. Pauliina
  25. You know I agree with the dietitian. Clearly the antibodies have been dropping and continue to drop, I'd expect that if he kept getting gluten that they wouldn't keep getting lower or would even get higher again. So I really think it's a question of time. I think generally both patients and doctors underestimate the time it really takes to heal from celiac...
