  1. No, you dont need to be viatamin deficient to be a Celiac. Many are, but its not a requirement. Your doctor is misinformed and giving you incorrect medical advice. 97% of Celiacs are undiagnosed and 1 in 133 Americans have Celiac. NIH realized that the medical profession here knows little to nothing about Celiac, and launched an awareness campaign last...
  2. Susan: A couple options: It might not be pinned yet (meaning, a moderator hasn't read and approved it yet, so it hasn't been pinned) A moderator thought it was best posted in another section, so they moved it. Does this help? Laura I just checked...it was because your post had not been Pinned yet. I pinned it.
  3. I take the sublingual B12 and I think it is great. I have multiple issues beyond Celiac, and it is just one thing that I am doing to help, but I really feel like it makes a difference. My husband, who doesn't have any health problems, has started using it and has seen a noticeable difference in how he feels.
  4. I was 22 (just shy of 23)...which for my "generation" is SUPER early. We are going to the Radio and Television Correspondents Dinner at the Washington DC Hilton on Wednesday night. President Bush is going to be there! He comes to this one every few years, and he'll be here this year. Plus, all the big media companies (CNN, Fox, NBC/ABC/CBS, etc...
  5. Bellasmama: Congratulations on getting a diagnosis! And, welcome to the board. I wish I had been on this board when I was first diagnosed, it would have made my life so much easier. This board is really the best resource out there. The other resource I recommend is the book listed in my signature...it is a wonderful medical reference. Best of...
  6. If it had any wheat in it, by law, it is required to be listed/disclosed because of the Food Labeling Law of 2006. So, that would only leave barley/malt, by chance. If the issue is if the vinegar has wheat, if it doesn't list it, by law, it is safe from wheat.
  7. Jo: Your doctor can order the genetic testing, usually through Prometheus Labs. This way, your insurance will be more likely to cover the testing rather than Enterolab. Prometheus is also highly respected/well known for their genetic testing. Laura
  8. All Celiac experts strongly recommend that ALL first degree relatives are initially tested for Celiac. Considering that you can develop Celiac at any point in life, a doctor should be willing to periodically test for Celiac. Or, test if there are symptoms. If your doctor isn't willing to do that, then the doctor is NOT knowledgable about Celiac, and...
  9. You would have to be consuming gluten for an extended period of time (a few months) for the tests to be reliable. The whole point of Celiac is that when you take gluten out, your body stops reacting. The tests are measuring the reaction to gluten. Generally, you aren't having a reaction, so your tests would be negative. It doesn't mean you don't have...
  10. According to the Food Labeling Law of 2006, all companies must disclose any wheat used in their products. The chances of barley or malt in OJ is slim.
  11. Celiac is linked to two main genes, HLA DQ2 and HLA DQ8. Your husband probably has one or both of them, and you very well may have one or both of them. These genes are common in America (about 30%) of the population has one/both genes, so obviously, having the gene itself doesn't mean that any one person will have it. Current estimates are that 1 in 1...
  12. Dr. H is one of the (if not THE) leading researcher in terms of gluten/neurological. His work is often cited by the other "big" Celiac researchers. There is evidence that there are gluten problems that don't cause GI damage, but instead 'damage' us neurologically (similar to how DH affects our skin). Can you post the other articles you have found about...
  13. Thanks, Patti. I was having a good day recently and Eric had a new camera. I've gained and maintained some weight recently, so I feel like I look healthier. I've gained 10 lbs since my "low point" in the fall. Its taken 4+ months to do so, so its been a really slow process, but I'm happy that I have a little bit more to work with.
  14. Did she have the full Celiac blood panel re-run? During the endoscopy, did they take multiple biopsies in multiple locations to look for remaining gluten damage? Does she eat out at all? Who is preparing her food? How careful is she with her diet? Has she tried using lactaids to see if lactose is a problem? Tested for h.pylori? Parasites? Is...

  16. Just wanted to say goodmorning and I hope that everyone is having a good day....I'm still here and reading! Earlier this I wasn't doing so hot, but the past three days have generally been pretty nice . I'm in for another IV today. xoxo
  17. Jillian: Just wanted to add my voice to the welcomes you are receiving! Lots of people on this board don't have an official diagnosis, for various reasons. We really don't discriminate here..... the main thing is that we all are eating gluten free, and all the joys that go with it! I hope you stick around, and read a lot. Ask questions,...
  18. Just an FYI: I'm pretty sure that the software package that hosts the board is a standard package, so even *if* Scott wanted to make a big change like this, I don't even know if it would be possible.
  19. Does not apply to restaurants etc
  20. SIBO is a bacterial overgrowth, and is treated with an antibiotic, usually Rifaxamin.
  21. double post: deleted.
  22. You have a gold standard diagnosis. No matter what you choose, I would find a doctor who actually knows something about Celiac, not this one!
  23. SIBO can be tested for via a hydrogen breath test that your doctor can order.
  24. I've read the story of the girl(?) who was a biopsy confirmed Celiac and did not have the "celiac" genes. It was amazing. Does anyone have the link to share? Laura
  25. I like them www.tinkyada.com has a lot of their "other" varieties.
