    ARCHIVED Good Doctor

I live in NoVa and do not have a GI here (dx'ed before moving here). However, one of the BEST, BEST, BEST Celiac experts is at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. His name is Dr. Alessio Fasano. His website is www.celiaccenter.org. I would recommend calling his Celiac Clinic and setting up an appointment there. You can read more about him and his...
  3. You should be receiving emails that someone has responded to the post---you won't get an email with the post in it. It will be an email that looks like this: "topic subscription notification reply" is the title: USERX has just posted a reply to a topic that you have subscribed to titled "Name of Topic Here". The topic can be found here: Open...
  4. Only if we discuss if marshmellows are truly gluten free, analyze the ingredients, talk about the possibility of cross contamination at the marshmellow factory, call the company to confirm, check the food labeling laws, see if the utensils used were new and if gluten could hide in them, talk about wheat in charcoal briskets and debate the possibility of getting...
  5. For any product sold in a store (i.e., a grocery store), the food labeling laws are applicable to all products, no matter where they are made. So MSG would be safe in a product found at a store, but not necessarily a restaurant.
  6. Its ok, we were all surprised, stunned, shocked, horrified, etc. as you are. Why does it have to be in so much? One of my favorite sites: www.celiacdiseasecenter.columbia.edu. Great, reliable information that will be good to share with your family, if you need it. Plus, it is a respectable source--Dr. Green is one of the leading Celiac physicians,...
  7. Rob, I think your experience with a lack of knowledge from the general medical community is very common, unfortunately. Many of us have experienced the same thing, which led us to read, research, read journal articles, asking questions, etc. We learned that it was up to us to learn what we needed. Its frustrating, but I've learned that generally, those...
  8. Yes. Yes, they are a rare and great find. My husband is famous for dishing me up ice cream on Saturday mornings and bringing it to me in bed. No wonder I married him!
  9. For what its worth: Dr. Green, a leading Celiac expert, lists which labs he thinks are good at performing these tests. LabCorp and Quest were NOT on this list. from celiacdiseasecenter.columbia.edu: "Q: I have heard that there are issues about which laboratories to use for serum antibodies testing. What are these issues? Should I be concerned?...
  10. Rob, Just wanted to welcome you to the board. You have been given some great advice so far. Celiac Disease is Celiac Disease.....some people have NO symptoms, some people are debilitated by all 200 symptoms, and everyone else lies somewhere in between. Ingesting gluten sets off the autoimmune response (turns the switch "ON") and our goal is to...

    ARCHIVED Horray!

Lisa, Congratulations! That really is wonderful news! I'm sure you must be relieved to know all your hard work is paying off! Keep up the good work! Laura
  12. Hi Dan, Welcome to the board! I'm happy you have found this site. Congratulations on getting a diagnosis---sometimes, that is the hardest part. Can you tell us a little bit more about your symptoms, and how you were diagnosed? Blood test? Biopsy? etc. Like with most things with Celiac, there isn't a great, standard answer. It really varies from...
  13. Hi S, Just wanted to welcome you to the board! I hope that you find this place a warm and supportive forum, full of education and tips for the gluten free life! I'm happy that seeing others has given you hope. Its very hard when you don't know anyone else who has it---so seeing others who live "normal" lives makes us feel more empowered---"Hey, if...
  14. I have to re-iterate: I LOVE THIS MAN! And I really love Elisabeth also---I give her a lot of credit for speaking up about this. Same with Heidi Collins. KUDOS! SusieQ..........you never fail to entertain!
  15. Wow, Congratulations, Gwen! How exciting for you and your family!!!!!!!!!!!! Be sure to report back if they are safe or not
  16. Can I just say that I LOVE DR. GREEN! I would hug that man if I ever get the chance to meet him. Between him and Dr. Fasano, I truly love these guys! Did anyone notice the part where he talked about infections and gluten........very interesting, and what I have suspected is my problem. Bravo to Susie, Elisabeth (who, I swear, is pregnant...
  17. Hi Gwen Based on the ingredients listed, it appears to not to have any gluten containing ingredients. The starch they use is corn. However, in any circumstance like this, I would double check with the company. Their phone number is 877.926.6396. Word of caution: You should not be consuming anything UNTIL you know its gluten free If you don...
  18. I'll be real honest and throw this out there: This doesn't make sense to me. Couple things: those products listed are rarely made from wheat. Not that they can't be, but they are rarely made from wheat. if they contained wheat, they would be required to list wheat as an ingredient on the labels. I don't know, I just don't get it. I've found that...
  19. I have not had this one done---has anyone heard of this method with gluten? What is the purpose of this testing? I had a hydrogen breath test, but my liquid did not contain gluten. It was a very small amount of liquid/gel. It tested for bacterial overgrowth in the small intestines. I have also heard of it testing for lactose intolerance, but I believe...
  20. I don't have a lot to add, unfortunately, as I am not as familiar with diabetes. I'm sure others will chime in with their knowledge, though. However, I do remember that HLA DQ8 (one of the Celiac genes) is also considered a diabetic gene, as well (there are other diabetic 'genes', but this one stuck out for me). So that may be part of the puzzle...
  21. Thanks so much, Angie. I love, love, love, LOVE Ritas. Thanks for sharing!
  22. I don't clip or do anything...I put them in the envelope, in the order of cover letter, resume, references, all in there "loose"
  23. Lisa: I don't think that lactose causes damage (to my knowledge), just discomfort/symptoms when we don't have enough lactase. Casein, I think I've heard that it hypothetically can, in some people. I don't think they know enough yet. Laura
  24. If she has any villi damage (i.e., 1 in 7) that is POSITIVE! Just because she doesn't have total villous atophy doesn't mean she doesn't have Celiac. It means 1. Celiac is patchy and 2. you might have caught it early enough. You do not need a doctor's prescription to put your child on a gluten free diet. Any other doctor would tell you that your child...
