  1. Open Original Shared Link Use this list of companies (mainly, posts 1, 2 and 9) and that will take away worries of "hidden" ingredients. These companies state that they will not hide gluten in things like modified food starch (etc), so you can eat these and not worry. Check on the back of all products you buy-they will have the name of the company on...
  2. Just so you know, positive bloodwork (depending on which tests) can range from indicative to highly indicative of Celiac, regardless of the biopsy. I have read a lot of other books, and I really prefer Dr. Green's book. I don't think there is a lot of other things that the other books provide, except for "dealing" with the gluten free life (which, I...
  3. Ask your doctor to test him (full Celiac blood panel), as well as run the gene test, to determine if he has one of the Celiac genes. Since he is not 18, it is your job to protect him. Better now to get him tested while you have a say in all this!
  4. Lactose is the stuff in dairy that some people's bodies can't fully process/break down. Lactase is the enzyme that breaks down the lactose. Hence, lactaid. Lactaid isn't medicine, but lactase supplements.
  5. Not worth it. Gluten free...not gluten lite!
  6. Rachel, Thinking of you...hope it went well!!!!! Let us know.....(not that I'm concerned that you won't!) Laura
  7. Actually, getting the biopsies isn't that long. I had my new doctor fax the release, they sent it out the next day, and it was there within the work week. But, the first step is getting the release signed. If you want to expedite the process, you might call Dr. Lewis' office, ask to speak to a nurse, tell her your concerns, and see if they can send you...
  8. Megan, welcome to the board! Unfortunately, your story is all too common among others with Celiac. I think all of us have been told that we have IBS at some point in time! Definitely try the diet. It is a steep learning curve, but if gluten is your problem, this will be such a blessing. I was sick for about 10 months and was dx'ed at 23, so I...
  9. Farrbody: The biopsy is considered the "gold standard." If really is a personal decision, and it sounds like you have it (positive blood test + family history). If you want the possibility of being 100% sure and never being questioned by a doctor as to if you "really" have it or not, or if you just want piece of mind, I think it would be fine to have...
  10. DeerGirl, Welcome to the board! Not sure if you've seen it already, but the Columbia Celiac Center's page is www.celiacdiseasecenter.columbia.edu. If you want to obtain slides (I'm assuming you had an endoscopy done, and you want the tissue samples in paraffin sent to your new doctor), you'll have to sign a release form at your new doctor, stating...
  11. Time is actually pretty good about Celiac--- There was a two page article in Time Magazine in July 2004. I know the date because it led me to be tested for Celiac....gave me my life back.
  12. triticum is another name for wheat on hair/beauty products. avena is oats.
  13. She magically appeared! TB---good to see you back on.
  14. La Choy is gluten free. San J is also gluten free. I believe one of the Kroger (generic store brand) is gluten free.
  15. An endoscopy can look for other things (i.e., this might not be entirely/or at all Celiac). A gluten free diet won't help much if he doesn't have a problem with gluten, and has other problems.
  16. I have a VERY VERY VERY happy husband and household right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO RAMS!
  17. The best way to learn if things are gluten free is to know how to successfully read labels. Sometimes, it can be hard to make generalizations to a whole type of food. Wheat is required to be listed on all labels, and there is a list of companies that will list any gluten source (click on my user name, and you will see it on my list of topics). Taken together...
  18. Nope, that post was from January. Last she has logged on under her name was March 5th. She is usually on more often. She is such a valued member, and provides such useful information and delightfully accurate descriptions....
  19. GO VCU (on right now!) --- Eric's alma mater!!! Its gluten free pizza at my house right now! (And papa john's and beer for Eric and his buddies) GO RedHawks---Dad's alma mater. PSU didn't make it (imagine that )
  20. Make sure that the medicine you take is gluten free. The Imodium pills are, but I believe some of the liquid versions aren't. Are you positive she is entirely gluten free? Is she eating out at all? Best of luck, and I hope her symptoms improve quickly!!!!
  21. Has anyone heard from Tarnalberry (Tiffany)? I haven't seen her on here in awhile...
  22. I'm not sure what you are asking. The threads are already subdivided into appropriate categories. I think once you get beyond that, its hard to tell where things would go, as many threads cover a "variety" of topics (i.e., a thread in parents of kids with celiac might talk about symptoms, and food, and how to deal with a doctor, all in one thread).
  23. Some people don't feel comfortable with that "identifying" information, so they don't have it included in their descriptor section. Its a personal choice as to how much people feel safe with posting information.
  24. Wheat is required by law to be clearly listed, so we are just down to any sort of rye, barley/malt, and oats.
  25. Sometimes we can't figure it out, we are just happy it works
