ARCHIVED Should She Be Tested?
happygirl replied to Reader's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
What blood tests were run? There are five main tests that need to be run, and often doctors do not run the full panel, so that's why I'm asking. Has she been gene tested to see if she has one or both of the Celiac genes (which are present in about 98% of Celiacs)? I think that the positive dietary response is enough to say that she is gluten intolerant... -
Hi Trev, Welcome to the board! I am happy you have found it...it is the best resource out there for education, food/ingredients, support, recipes, and dealing with Celiac. Although it really is daunting to start with, the good thing is there are a ton of people on this board! And we all started where you are. The other good news, is that while it...

ARCHIVED Test Results
happygirl replied to e&j0304's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Jaynee: Lab results vary per lab. That is why they list the reference ranges, because what is positive on one, is not on another. So, it depends on which lab was used and their methods (this applies to many other tests, not just Celiac). Hope that clears up the confusion! Laura -
ARCHIVED Whole Food Store
happygirl replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Whole Foods not only carries many gluten free products (crackers, cookies, mixes, pastas), but they also carry their own line of gluten free products. It is called the "gluten free bakehouse" and is in a frozen section, near the regular bakery. All of their items are together in one place. I LOVE THEM!!!!! I could not live without their pizza crusts and... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Testing For Infant
happygirl replied to dionnek's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm not sure if Prometheus is blood or salivea....ask your doctor to test your child for the Celiac genes, and send it out to their genetic lab....very often, it is Prometheus. Given that a parent has dx'ed Celiac, there is a medical reason for it, and insurance should cover it. (It wouldn't be any different than taking your child at any age to the dr.... -

ARCHIVED Starbucks Frappuccino
happygirl replied to gaynonna's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Very rarely is maltodextrin derived from wheat. I am not a coffee drinker, but there are many Starbucks fans on this board, so I'm sure others will chime in. -

ARCHIVED Dogs - Can They Have celiac disease?
happygirl replied to debmidge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, dogs can have Celiac. In particular, Irish Setters are "known" for having it. from Iams.com: Gluten-Sensitive Enteropathy Gluten (a protein found in wheat) is responsible for wheat-sensitive enteropathy, occasionally found in Irish Setters from the United Kingdom. Gluten enteropathy of Irish Setters is a malabsorption syndrome, which responds to... -
ARCHIVED So Sick Of This
happygirl replied to ReneCox's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Rene, I am so sorry to hear of the tough time you are going through. Its sad that so many of us can emphathize with you....but we most certainly can. My undx'ed Celiac started at age 22. It is so frustrating! Couple things: you might want to have your doctor repeat your full Celiac panel, to see if you still have elevated levels. This can at least... -
ARCHIVED What's Easier... The Whole Family Or One Person
happygirl replied to mommalov's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We have two main options when we go to people's houses: Once I learned enough about the diet, learned enough to clearly express what I needed, and was lucky enough to have friends that wanted to cook for me, we would discuss a meal, and go through it step by step. Ask the person what they want to make, ask them for their brands/ingredients (or, tell them... -

ARCHIVED Wife Of Celiac - Just Found Out Today Hubby Has It.
happygirl replied to QanQan's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome to the board! Try finding Tinkyada's rice pastas. Most of them are brown rice pastas, so they are very health and nutritious. www.tinkyada.com Many grocery stores, health food stores, or places like Wegman's, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods carry them. I am the only Celiac in the house, and my husband and I both eat them....as well as our extended... -
ARCHIVED For Those Who Are Dairy Free
happygirl replied to Lisa's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Jeanne: I think this was a reference for people who have multiple food intolerances, that sometimes things like canola (and other oil sources) can cause problems. In terms of Celiac, it is safe. And to my knowledge, there is no link between Celiac and canola (i.e., like Celiac and lactose). I think it was just meant in terms of anecdotal evidence on the... -
ARCHIVED Does This Mean Anything?
happygirl replied to chocolatelover's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, they should have taken "multiple samples from multiple sites"...not just two samples. When I had an endoscopy to check for other problems, as well as persisting Celiac damage, my GI took 10 biopsies in my small intestine. Now, two biopsies is better than one, of course, but you are right---since Celiac is so patchy, it increases (but does not ensure... -
ARCHIVED Your Experiences About What To Try After gluten-free?
happygirl replied to Flor's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Let's see....you have already mentioned some of the possibilities Considering you have "only" been on the diet three months (and it seems like forever!), you still may very well have not healed fully. It can take months to fully recover. Do you have a good doctor? It might be worth having a routine check up, and then ask to be tested/referred... -
ARCHIVED For Those Who Are Dairy Free
happygirl replied to Lisa's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Its frustrating (and you know that I have "been there, done that" with food issues). I would say its worth a shot...not everyone has a prob with canola oil...never know til you try Once you start eliminating more than casein and gluten, finding a butter substitute is pretty limited besides ghee and a coconut type shortening. (I spent countless hours... -
ARCHIVED Test Results
happygirl replied to e&j0304's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
generally, the total IgA number is important if it is low, which means that you can have trouble scoring positive on other tests, even if you actually are positive. the absence of tTG doesn't mean 100% that you don't have Celiac. Higher levels of intestinal damage are correlated with tTG, so you could be mildly damaged, and not scoring positive (yet)... -
ARCHIVED What's Easier... The Whole Family Or One Person
happygirl replied to mommalov's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hey momma, Welcome to the board! Happy to have you here and hope that you find some much-needed answers. I think that it varies per family.....some are completely gluten free, others are gluten "lite," others are "normal" with some gluten-free products. I think its a trial and error for most people, to find a routine that works. In general... -

ARCHIVED For Those Who Are Dairy Free
happygirl replied to Lisa's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Ghee (like Carla mentioned) Some/one of the fleishman's margarines is dairy free, if I remember correctly. Spectrum makes some spreads that are dairy free as well: Open Original Shared Link Smart Balance's buttery spreads are gluten and casein free (per the company, talked to them on the phone) but their cheese products have casein. (this is who... -
