  1. Nancy: The drug is meant to be taken before a gluten meal (kind of like a lactaid). I don't believe it "builds up" long term in our bodies. So yes, I believe you could just take it when you wanted to. It stops gluten from crossing a barrier that it shouldn't (by closing the barrier), thus, preventing the autoimmune response from occurring. Laura
  2. not sure if yall have seen this, but I think it will help explain some of the differences between ILADS and IDSA. The letter at the first part is good, but its the comparison later on that is so compelling. Might be good for Bev to see, also. Open Original Shared Link this is a good part: College of American Pathologists (CAP): ELISA assays for Lyme...
  3. My doctor's office received the samples, and they are working on sending it out...so hopefully it will go out this week. Once it goes out, it takes about 2 weeks for results. Of particular interest: Ned Tijdschr Geneeskd. 2005 Dec 17;149(51):2873-6. Links [severe diarrhoea with invasive intestinal spirochaetosis][Article in Dutch] Koopmans NG, Kwee...
  4. Just remember that you do not need a doctor's permission to go gluten free. Your diet will not be harmed in any way: you can supplement the nutrients with other foods.
  5. Carla-I don't remember if you are still on Omnicef or not, but if you are or go back on it, I just found out today that there is a generic Omnicef....supposed to be considerably cheaper. Are you on the Omnicef or the generic? Patti----you poor thing!!!!!! That is definitely the last thing you need. Like you need to deal with gluten issues on top of your...
  6. Another point to add: considering her doctor is Dr. Green (or, at the least, she is in touch with him), and she has mentioned that Grace had a gluten-free birthday cake (she was delaying Grace's gluten intake), ... it seems to me that she is extremely conscientious and is well-informed on research, latest trends, etc. She also mentioned that she and Tim...
  7. Nancy... You poor thing! I'm sorry to hear you were glutened. Especially when you are already so careful, etc. Hope that its a quick recovery. Laura
  8. My guess is that she had special arrangements made. Of all places, they can cook safely for you at the White House. She was pretty sick before she went gluten free, so I don't think she would have just gone and eaten "everything." It sounded like a lot of it could have been naturally gluten free, too. I don't think she likes to talk about Celiac...
  9. Thats so awesome, Jessica! How exciting...and what a nice surprise!
  10. Paula, You are welcome . I've found the best info online. go to wikipedia, and search for hla dq2, and click on the first link...I think its a great comprehensive overview of the hla dq genes of interest to us.
  11. Its scary, isn't it? But yes, those statistics are the most current. I hope that diagnoses increase with increased awareness.
  12. If you have a gluten problem: No, its not what life is like once you start and remain on the diet, and heal. Once you have healed, your symptoms are gone and you are normal. The only times you aren't normal are when you eat gluten. (that is, if your only health problem is the gluten issue. many celiacs have other issues as well, like thyroid, diabetes,...
  13. Destiny: We'll get you through this, I promise!
  14. close doesn't mean the same though. the entire explanation, from wikipedia: Note on DQ Serotype Names in Relationship with Allele Names DQ serotypes are usually a recognition of Beta chain isoform groups For example, DQ2 = alleles that start with DQB1*02 (*0201, *0202, and *0203). DQ2 is encoded by alleles that start with DQB1*02 DQ4 is encoded...
  15. I fully agree with what you said! And there are wonderful dieticians out there, but it is often hard to find one who knows about the diet. If you find one, I definitely would recommend it....I wish I had one when I was dx'ed. That being said, if you can't find one, and you "settle" for one, it may be worse than not going. I went my 3rd week of dx, and...
  16. Jessica: Welcome to the board! This is the best resource out there. Here are some pieces of advice that I hope will be helpful. Check out the book in my signature, written by a leading Celiac expert. You can get it at the bookstore or order online. Its GREAT. Try Tinkyada rice noodles. I've tried a ton of brands, and these are the best! www.tinkyada...
  17. It most certainly would be worth trying the diet. Maybe its not "true" Celiac, or maybe its not showing up on tests, or... who knows? Try the diet, see if it works. Bring your doctor literature about Celiac and delayed growth and demand to have him tested. What are the symptoms of celiac disease? Celiac disease affects people differently. Symptoms...
  18. Clair: Celiac is not an infectious disease to be passed along. However, if one of the parents has Celiac, chances are, they have one of the genes predisposing to Celiac. If you pass the genes on to your kids, then they have a chance of being a Celiac. Just having the gene does NOT mean you have Celiac. about 30% of the population has one of the genes...
  19. Your HLA DQ 3 subtype 8 is what is referred to as HLA DQ 8, which is a Celiac gene. from wikipedia: DQ3 is split into DQ7, DQ8, and DQ9, but allele retain DQB1*03. DQ7 = DQB1*0301 (or very similar alleles) DQ8 = DQB1*0302 (or very similar alleles) DQ9 = DQB1*0303 (or very similar alleles)
  20. Depending on your local stores, you might be surprised to find what your regular grocery store carries. I only go to WF to supplement with "special treats." I, of course, now can't live without those treats, but still . I did it for two years before I moved to a place with a WF. (I swear, we didn't move just for the WF. Really.) Open Original Shared...
  21. instead of wheat pasta: substitute tinkyada rice pasta (you can get it at whole foods and many other stores) www.tinkyada.com (you can make spaghetti with lean ground beef, onion/mushrooms, and a store bought sauce---many/most are safe) instead of flour tortillas: corn tortillas. nuts/peanuts, if you can tolerate them (and check to make sure they are...
  22. Open Original Shared Link select your store, and then select gluten free.
  23. jodikris: I think that Richard summed it all up perfectly. If you have DH, you have to be gluten free. Best of luck, and I hope that you find some much needed relief.
  24. Just popping in to say hello to all. Hope that everyones' week started off wonderfully. Any appt's this week? I think Bev is having her blood drawn. Patti, when is yours? xoxo
