  1. Good luck! That's not exactly true. In most provinces you can get the blood tests without a problem except in Ontario - they make it tough there. Not all tests are available in all labs so that can be limiting. It can also be very hard to get in to see a GI in some provinces; in Alberta it can take close to a year if symtoms are not extreme...
  2. Yes, GeorgiaGuy has s right. With low IgA, you'll need the IgG based tests which are tTG IgG, DGP IgG, EMA IgG (if available), and ay be the old AGA IgG. The IgA based tests will almost always be falsely negative in a celiac with low IgA, which occurs in 5% of celacs. You'll need to keep eating the gluten for about 8-12 weeks for the tests to be accurate...
  3. Yes, a paediatric GI would be the one you would want for an endoscopy, but a pcp should be able to order the blood tests for you, and you want those tests because the biopsy is not foolproof either - it misses up to 1 in 5 celacs. Getting the blood tests now might let him go gluten-free sooner too because although the blood tests need 8-12 weeks of gluten...
  4. I'm lazy. I omly "make" pie crusts from crushed cookies and butter. LOL
  5. Love BC, but hubby is in the oil industry so we'll be staying in Alberta.
  6. Well... they almost touched on NCGS and how the gluten-free diet can help that (approximate) 6% of the population... Almost. Sigh.
  7. You do, but your symptoms also warrant testing. Please know that it can take days to weeks to months to notice improvements on the gluten-free diet for all symptoms. If you want to do a gluten-free trial, you should give it a few months. The problem with that is that if you wish to test for celiac disease at a later date, you will need to do a 8-12 week...
  8. Welcome to the board. Yeah... the doctor only ran 1 of the 8 most common celiac tests. He missed most of them, and the ones best for children. If you can, get more tests run because most celiac disease tests have a sensitivity between 70-95% meaning they can miss 5-30% of all celiacs. This is the full celiac panel: tTG IgA and tTG IgG (anti...
  9. When I was constipated, my colon (descending) would swell and I could feel the top of it under the bottom my ribs rather firmly. My anatomy may be a bit different though because I haven't had a spleen for over 20 years. The bloating would sometimes hurt to stand up straight and it did change with deep breaths but after being gluten-free for 2 years, I don...
  10. Oh yeah. Luckily he would live on raw fruits and veggies if I let him.... and I mostly do. LOL Our dollars are similar but we're a little below right now. The problem is that even when our dollar is worth more than the American, stuff still costs more. My son's book is sitting in front of me and in the US the price is $9.95 but up her it would cost...
  11. We try really hard to do that. He is df,gluten-free, and nu-free... my hardest child to feed. Up here, the Enjoy Life choc chips are $5.99-$6.99. For some reason, food in Canada cost 10-50% more than in the States. Actually, EVERYTHING coasts 10-50% more than in the States. I think our average house price in my city is about $430,000.... I'm bitter...
  12. I did that after being gluten-free for a few months. Some fries I bought for my kids were not gluten-free. I don't know if I got the brands mixed up or they changed the label, but I was eating 2-5 of them a couple of times a week for a couple of months. I could not for the life of me figure out why I was steadily feeling worse. LOL I haven't been glutened...
  13. I have to disagree. Acupuncture has been very helpful managing symptoms of a herniated disk - for me. My back would spasm and I would be crooked for weeks. Accupunture was the only thing that could get me straightened up (mostly), and that was only with one accupuncturist, his other employees couldn't do that for me. My father was able to extend his...
  14. It could be other food sensitivities too. Dairy, apples and pears give me sharp stomach pains similar to gluten. Sometimes coffee will do it too. A food and sympoms journal might help identifying another sensitivity if that is the cause. Best wishes.
  15. You could always try the other tests (tTG IgA, tTG IgG, DGP IgA and DGP IgG) now. It is possible that your body still has high enough auto-antibody levels after 6 months of eating gluten-light - it sounds like you were not quite gluten-free which requires zero gluten. Sometimes a little gluten is enough for those tests, and sometimes the auto-antibodies...
  16. So true! My son has a tree nut allergy so it's a good one for us.
  17. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, that one. LOL
  18. Welcome to the board! Glad you found us. Do you know exactly which test you had done? The IgA (immunoglobulin A often called total serum IgA) is not actually a celiac test but a measure of you immune response in the mucosal linings of the body (intestines, mouth, etc). Some doctors (incorrectly) shorten some of the celiac disease test names that are...
  19. Enjoy Life has gluten-free and dairy -free chocolate chips too, if those don't work out for you.
  20. A good naturopath or accupuncturist might be able to help with recovery. The key word there is good... and might. LOL I have been to a GREAT accupuncturist who did amazing things for me, and I have been to a couple mediocre ones who appeared to be of no help (not for gluten related issues). If the practitioner really knows their stuff, they might be able...
  21. Yep, the ladies are giving you great advice. Keep eating gluten, if you can, if you are getting more testing done. Once a celiac stops consuming gluten her test results will eventually fall to normal - in some that happens in a matter of weeks, for others it can take months or years. Remember, if you want to retest after being gluten-free for a time (weeks...
  22. Ditto everything Laura said. She's spot on. You most likely have celiac disease with a test result 6 times the upper normal limit - that's quite high. Don't go gluten-free until you are sure you are done testing, As Laura said, they may want to to an endoscopic biopsy on you. Try to ensure 6 or even more samples are taken if you chose to have the procedure...
  23. Thanks Jebby and Gottaski. I'll look into those!
  24. Almost done. I hope you feel better quickly once you are gluten-free. Enjoy a cinnamon bun for me.
