ARCHIVED At What Age Were You Diagnosed?
elonwy replied to fisharefriendsnotfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I searched for cigarette at one point ( trying to find out if zig-zag is gluten-free, still have the occasional puff, and I'm a roll-your-own gal.) and they were talking about case studies that showed smoking delayed onset or at least symptoms of Celiac ( not that its a fair trade at all). If you Google smoking and Celiac it comes up with some really interesting... -
I understand the reasoning, when I was first diagnosed I thought "well holiday's I'll cheat." Further reasearch made me think otherwise, and now I have no desire to cheat. The effects of gluten are cumulative, and the long-term risks are pretty horrifying. I will now quote source to help illustrate this point. Also, cheating one every three months or so is...

ARCHIVED At What Age Were You Diagnosed?
elonwy replied to fisharefriendsnotfood's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Diagnosed at 27 after years of minor naggling health issues and one year of really bad health. Interestingly enough, my bad symptoms developed after I quit smoking ( diff thread). Seems like theres alot of us here in that age range. Elonwy -
I have pepto at home, at the office, and the savior of my life, Pepto chewable tablets in my purse. Helps with gluten attacks, heartburn - all my tummy troubles. I've been out and about a few times and been saved from having to call it off from being able to pop a couple of those puppies. When leisurely at home however, I make ginger tea ( also a good immune...

I'm having a Halloween party tomorrow, and everything I'm serving is gluten free, and I've ordered my friends not to bring anything for obvious reasons. All of a sudden I'm really nervous they're going to hate the food. I also have a Lacto-vegetarian coming, a mushroom allergy and an onion allergy, so I've made a couple other concessions. My friends with...

Open Original Shared Link Of course, under terms to beware of it lists corn gluten. <sigghh> Elonwy

My boss saw it, told me all about it. It was cool, I think she understands it alot more now. She's been cool about it but has been hinting that I've been kinda hypochodriacing a little. I flipped out at someone cause they were eating a sandwich and just walked up and put thier hand in the bag of Cheetos I was munching on, I just gave him the cheetos. She...

I have not come across any pickled ginger that was made from anything besides rice vinegar. You're talking about Nori, which is the seaweed they use to make the rolls. It should be fine, unless its specially treated. The seaweed that is trouble is the kind they sprinkle on rice , its all chopped up with stuff added to it like sesame seeds and soy sauce...

I have yet to find a wasabi with gluten, I even have wasabi in a tube at home, and its nothing but... wasabi. I also am curious about the wasabi- gluten comment. Miso soup by itself is gluten free, its when they get all fancy and add things to it like sauces, or at one restaurant I was at- noodles. Why would you put noodles in Miso? The whole point of miso...

I've never been to the Fairmont, so don't really know about them. Remember Volcano House BAD, Kilaeua Lodge GOOD. Open Original Shared Link If you want to email me seperatey with your name and a vague or specifc timetable, I'll let the lodge know you're coming. I highly recommend reservations as well. My mom's art hangs on thier walls, she was a chef... -
ARCHIVED Hawaii (big Island) & Maui

A word on Bubba Gump, cause theres one in Kailua Kona as well, on the Big Island. Unless it is labeled Local Catch on the menu, thier fish is flown to them frozen from the Mainland. So you have a fish restaurant in Hawaii, selling fish caught in Alaska, frozen for however long and then shipping to Hawaii, I have problems with that. If you have to choose... -
ARCHIVED Hawaii (big Island) & Maui
elonwy replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Another thing to watch out for is once you get out of the tourist areas, IF you get out of the tourist areas, where the Bubba Gumps and chain resatuarants are, that hawaiians put soy sauce on everything. They don't use salt, they use soy sauce. Well, I'm exagerrating, but it is everywhere. You will probably have better luck with health food stores on... -
ARCHIVED Hawaii (big Island) & Maui

Going to be on the Kohala coast - NICE resort. Kohala is gorgeous. I don't know anyone at the Marriott, though my mom had a friend who was a chef there and they had a very decent, well run kitchen, so my guess is the hotel itself would be a good bet. If you go into Kailua, go to Huggos, its a bit upscale but its the best restaurant in Kona since Bobadill... -

Where on the Big Island? I'm from there, haven't been gluten-free there yet, but know people who run and work at restaraunts and hotels, etc so could help you research or point you to some people. Elonwy BTW- Congratulations! -
My bf comes running up to me in the store yesterday with a bottle of Blue Ice vodka which is made from 100% Idaho Potatoes. We were in Albertsons of all places. Last night I had a sour apple martini and a silk panty (peach shnapps and vodka) and didn't have any of my grain- alcohol reactions. Its a very smooth mellow vodka, and I couldn't be happier. ...

I have a question for people that have eaten at PF Changs. I went to the one here in LA, and was handed the gluten-free menu, and lettuce wraps weren't on it. Are you guys getting gluten-free menus? or recommendations from servers? There were also no gluten-free fortune cookies, they did bring a regular one that I made my boyfriend eat so I could see the...

I am a big believer in B vitamins, wierd thing is Niacin is B3, Riboflavin is B2. Niacin is whats in Red Bull, makes your blood cells absorb more oxygen ( and acohol, depending on usage). Figures it would make you think better. I'm going to try a full B-Complex. Elonwy -

ARCHIVED Imagine If This Happened In The Us....
elonwy replied to celiac3270's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's called capitalism out of control, and its why I'm a fan of some sort of socialized health care or at a minimum health care reform. Most western european nations have a form of socialized or state run medical care, so the health care system and who gets care is not dictated by insurance companies and pharmacuetical companies the way it is here. Everyone... -
I disagree actually. I have come across real chicken stock twice now that has had wheat gluten added to it. If they make thier own stock its usually ok, but the pre-packaged stuff real or not, is dangerous. Elonwy

Heres the thing with shingles: if you take care of them, you'll be just fine. If you think you're just gonna deal with it like chicken pox you're screwed. My grandma was a tough little (4'2") old lady from Ireland who never went to the doctor in her life and had 9 children that lived. She got shingles at around 75, didn't do anything about it and ended up...

I think you're referring to Jasmine rice? Sortof a longer grain, brownish yellow in color? Yes it is gluten-free. Rice is actually always brown before its white ( I'm a fact junky don't mind me.) I found this great wikipedia article on rice. Open Original Shared Link Here's some excerpts: The seeds of the rice plant are first milled to remove the outer...

Ahhh rice. Yum. Safety of restaurant rice is going to depend a lot on what kind of food and how they prepare stuff as several people have already mentioned. Asian restaurants *tend* to steam rice in plain water, so the white or brown plain rice is usually fine, but its always good to ask. Obviously fried rice is out of the question. American restaurants...
