  1. Well, at 50 I am a good age to answer this. I started going through menopause at around 44. I can't say that my mood swings were from menopause or because I was sick all the time. Being sick makes you very moody. I did have hot flashes, my last hot flash was Christmas 02--my friends and I were having a party and I had the worst hot flash ever, but it...
  2. I have eaten Quaker Caramel Corn Ricecakes for over 5 years andnot once been glutened. The Cracker Jack rorn cakes are gluten free if you eat the "original" brand--the Butter Toffee Cracker Jack ricecake contains barley, so watch out for that one. Deb
  3. I, of course, am gluten free for almost 5 yrs, 2 yrs ago I found I was soy intolerant, then that December I found I am corn intolerant, last summer I found I couldnt have tomato in any form or potato, and as of late, I find I can't tolerate starches. Now the soy lecithin doesnt bother me and I cant use margarine, but am thinking I may get away from it too...
  4. I have heard over and over that Quaker cant be trusted, but Quaker Caramel Corn Rice Cakes have been my one staple since day one. I have never been glutened by them. I did get glutened by their chocolate chip snack cakes, but even then I dont think I was glutened, I think it was a reaction to the soy and corn in them. I have been gluten-free for almost...
  5. Morning Lister--the best thing you can do is to call the 800# for the company and ask about the product. Usually if it says gluten free, then it is, but there are still products I am leary of. I found some Puritan Pride vitamins that said gluten free, but there is barley grasses listed in the ingredients. So I asked them why and the lady called the company...
  6. Thank you for the articles. I find it amazing that celiacs has been known about for so long here in America and they still seem to know so little. At least they do know now that it isn't curable, only controllable, which is a big difference. I would be so ill if I ate as many bananas as they fed some of those poor children. I used to know a lady in Michigan...
  7. Gabrielle--how long have you been gluten free? Our malabsorption problems cause us to have chemical imbalances. I was pn paxil for years before I went gluten free--I was taking 40mgs a day and still having panic. After 3 months of gluten free, I weaned myself off of paxil. I suffered panic attacks, anticipatory anxiety, and agoraphobia. I drove 25 miles...
  8. Yes, your vitamins could be the culprit. There are some vitamins that we know are gluten free and some will even say gluten free on the package. Nature Made vitamins are gluten-free--do you have a CVS near you, they carry gluten-free vitamins. Check out a vitamin topic here in the forum and see what you find. Deb
  9. I didn't have to give up dairy, so that leaves me more options then you. Yogurt would be good for you to add, if you can eat soy--there are soy yogurts now--I can't have soy. Also, you may want to give up rice for a while and see if it is the culprit--I have recently found that I can't eat rice. I have finally realized that I can't have any grains. Keep...
  10. No Lauri--I didn't make it to the meeting. The pollen wars are so bad here right now and I was so sick last Tuesday--I came home from work and went to bed. I work at Island Optical Center on Main, near the library. One of our eyewear reps is married to a member of the group--I can't think of her name, but his is Tony. I just emailed Barb about being sick...
  11. Hey guys I will be there too. I am a member of the Suffolk County Celiac Group too and I volunteered for the day too. I live in E. Islip. Deb
  12. In our family, it's easier because 3 of us are celiacs, my father who is 71, my sister and I. My sister is also a dietician, so she experiments on better tasting recipes for us. How lucky are we to have a celiac dietician. Now my brother thinks we are nuts. He says, "Let me make you guys a big batch of barley soup and I will prove to you that barley can...
  13. I have been gluten free for almost 5 yrs and when I did go gluten free, I had been taking paxil for at least 3 years. At the time I was taking 40 mgs and was still having panic attacks. After about 3 months of gluten free, I decided to wean myself off paxil--DO NOT GO COLD TURKEY! Slowly decrease the dosage, cut them in half and in a few days, take that...
  14. Tara and Lisa, I grew up in Michigan--I moved to Long Island, New York 1 1/2 yrs ago. My sister is a celiac and a dietician in central Michigan. Along with gluten, I can't have soy, corn, most starches, and tomato. I also am staying away from rice products as much as possible. Very much limits what I can eat. Thank god dairy isnt a problem for me...
  15. Lynda, you must also realize that even doctors mis-speak. Some call gluten intolerance a wheat allergy and it's not the same thing. An intolerance is nothing like an allergy. The reactions are completely different. I saw a new doctor at the office I go to and was telling him I have celiacs and he says to me, "So does my son, he can't have barley, it makes...
  16. In the US, maltodextrin must be made with corn when talking about food products--BUT, there is no such ruling for anything other then foods, personal products, otc drugs and perscription drugs are not regulated in the same ways. Deb
  17. My sister is the first one I ask, of course she is a celiac too and a dietician--she has diagnosed patients before the doctor and the doc comes back and thanks her. Back when I first started coming to this site, celiac3270 and Kaiti are the ones I remember most. To this day, if I have a product question I am not sure of, I ask Kaiti and together we figure...
  18. I use a gluestick, as a matter of fact, the office I work in now uses the gluestick--even the doctor. Guess I started a fad there. Deb
  19. Hi Steve--That saying about falling and skinning your knee--that is from Dr. Peter Green's new book--he says that. Anyways--when you get thoughts such as this from another person, you also must consider the source. Some people truly do want to know what it's all about, some just can't imagine how we do it, and some are just plain obnoxious. When it's a...
  20. Eugene, to be quite truthful with you, usually unless you go to the doctor's experienced in Celiacs, then usually you educate the doctor. Dr. Peter Green is an excellant doctor, at Columbia University. And, for the most part, the best education you will receive about what to do, what works, what doesn't, what's safe, what isnt---can all be found in the...
  21. I have been gluten-free now for almost 5 yrs and that first year, I had to label food in the fridge. I told the kids, anything that said "mom" on it was ok to eat, but no double dipping and always a new eating utensil(like with butter). My odest son looked at my youngest and said, "Mom is just being stupid, this won't make any difference!" My younger son...
  22. I personally have not eaten there because there is so much I can't have anymore. My support group goest there all the time and they say it's excellent. It is maybe 3 miles from where I live--I wish I could eat just anywhere. Deb
  23. The Dannon company has given that same answer for 5 yrs now--my sister contacted them too. Anyone where they carry Dean's dairy products must be careful too. They state that the products are gluten-free but do not state that they have dedicated lines, which is just as important. Colombo, and most Yoplaits are gluten-free, just watch for the obvious, like...
  24. I don't know the answer to this either, but it would seem to me that any grains could cause the damage, but if its the gliatins in the wheat, rye, barley, and oats that does it, then maybe not. I do know I cant tolerate soy or corn now and I think rice is going too. No tomatoes and starches are out. Deb
  25. Personally, I would stay away from it all. I would not trust wheat grasses at all--some say its ok, but until they can prove it, then I don't touch it. I would not trust the foodist. Many dieticians have no idea about gluten and they give terrible advice. Don't get me wrong, there are some good ones out there, my sister is celiac and a dietician, so I...
