  1. Read the fine print on any vitamin bottle, even the ones that say gluten free. Nature Made is a good brand, it does not contain gluten. I was at a Puritan Pride outlet store here and the lady even went online to the company and they told her the vitamin I wanted was gluten free, yet as I was waiting and reading the label, what did I find--BARLEY GRASS....
  2. I never get glutened in my home, unless I do buy something without reading the ingredients. I use Pantene shampoo, Garnier Nutresse for hair color, I have used Gleem toothpaste since I was a child. I had a friend spend her vacation here with me this fall. She knows all about my celiacs and yet I was so nervous with her in the house. She had cookies...
  3. I think the numbers run close to each other, even steven!!!! I am one of the celiacs that gain weight when the intolerances are out of control. Our bodies react differently to gluten. I was sick everyday, and yet, I gained weight.
  4. Does it make a difference if test was fasting or non fasting ? Yes, the results from a non-fasting test are not anywhere near as reliable as a fasting test. covsooze--I do not know much about thyroid problems, but I do know that low levels of B12 will cause all kinds of problems. Also, celiacs does cause chemical imbalances and I am a firm believer in...
  5. AzKat--just jump right in and do it. Going a little gluten free doesn't help at all, if you are going to eat any gluten, then you are defeating your purpose. Good luck.
  6. Catherine, also keep in mind that many celiacs have had false negatives too. I gave up on doctors figuring this out. I have been gluten free now for 5 yrs and if I wanted a test now, I would have to do a gluten challange and eat gluten for some time and I won't, it's not worth having a piece of paper saying I have what I already know I have. Deb
  7. I am originally from Michigan, have lived on Long Island, New York now for almost 2 yrs--I love it here, but miss my Michigan family and friends. I lived in the middle of the mitten--Gratiot County, Ashley to be specific. I am going to Michigan on vacation in the next month or so. There is a great store in Lansing on the east side called Food For Life...
  8. Yeah. I'm mourning the loss of dairy and eggs nearly as much, if not more than gluten. All the clever substitutes for those things are made out of soy. Guess what....no soy either. Most of the tastiest commercial gluten free mixes substitute corn for starch and flour. Guess what....no corn. Alternative nut flours are becoming popular. You guessed it....no...
  9. I take 2400 mcg daily and I still have pins and needles in my feet, I am diagnosed with periphreal neuropathy in nearly my whole body, my hands and fingers go numb, and I get dizzy. For a person with neuropathy, normal levels are not anywhere near normal. I have a malabsorption problem with many vitamins, still after 5 yrs. I have been told that I may...
  10. I wonder if the McDonald's fries vary from state to state--I was never glutened by their fries in Michigan or Long Island New York--NEVER! I no longer can have potatoes, so I don't eat them, but my sister still does in Michigan and has never had a problem.
  11. I'm sorry, I do not have an answer for you--I do not know much about sugar.
  12. I didn't go into this and check for you, but here is a website: Open Original Shared Link You may be able to find the info you need here. I have the same problem here with the pharmicist at our local CVS store and I was told he is very knowledgeable about such things.
  13. My father has both. He was diagnosed with the diverticulitist first, then the celiacs. I really don't think they have much to do with each other, you just are one of those people who have mulitple diseases. Not fair, but happens all too often. My aunt has diverticulitist, but not celiacs. Deb
  14. Sweetfudge, real vanilla doesnt have gluten. Also remember that McCormick spices are gluten free, but not their mixture spices--such as the seasoning spices. Be careful with that--keep your spices simple. The one thing I always tell people to help them understand how much gluten it takes to make us ill: one piece of bread broken into 1000 crumbs and...
  15. I think it is very hard to judge how severe an attack is only because most of us were so consistently ill before going gluten free that we never really had a time when we felt normal in comparison to other people. I think that once you go gluten-free and are gluten-free for years, then the reaction seems much more violent, only because we aren't used to...
  16. Thank you for the info--I have emailed the company to see if this is available here in New York. My hands are already getting so rough. Nice to see you, hope you are feeling better than the last time we talked. Deb
  17. It is wonderful to be thought about. I work for a doctor and there are 6 of us there everyday. The doctor's wife always thinks about me and what she can bring me. At Thanksgiving last year, as is tradition, the doctor brings everyone a pie for the holidays, his wife specfically read turkey breast and found one that said--gluten free on it and that was...
  18. I am soy intolerant and my reaction to soy is the opposite of gluten. Gluten gives me diarrhea, soy constipates me--both cramping--tomatoes give me diarrhea, squash constipates. Of course, many of us react differently to our intolerances--what is normal for me may not be for you. Corn also constipates me.
  19. Normal levels of B12 are way too low for a person with neuropathy. I belong to two different periphreal neuropathy forums and B12 is discussed often. I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel 8 yrs ago, 3 yrs before I went gluten free. At the time, my left hand was worse, yet both hands were involved and I wore braces for 2 weeks straight, along with taking anti...
  20. Awwwwwwwwww--sometimes you just have to forgive and forget. It sounds to me like both mother's are trying and really didn't mean to make you ill. There is a wonderful soup base called Orrington Farms that you can tell your mom's about. It's the best flavoring I have ever used and it is gluten free. I can't use it any longer because it does contain corn...
  21. I break out in hives when wheat touches my skin and you also must remember--you can inhale gluten just the same as swallow it. Your best bet would be to stay away from the fields. Same goes for pizza parlors, bakeries, etc--you can inhale flour. My sister was glutened while making sugar cookies for her kids.
  22. Georgie--Jayhawkmom is correct--the minute you swallow, you are glutened. The reaction time is different in everyone. AND, the longer you are gluten free, the worse the reaction, most will say. Being glutened always gives me diarrhea, severe cramping, and my tummy ends up feeling like one huge black and blue for more than a week. Now barley causes a slightly...
  23. Yeah--we always need a laugh---my favorite might be: …it drives you crazy when someone says they completely understand your diet, they did Atkins. The other favorite is: ….you talk about your disease (not the unpleasant parts) so much to your friends and acquaintances that your husband tells you you need to get another hobby...........and still they don...
  24. You know you're a celiac if... ...you've ever been caught licking a discarded Twinkie wrapper. ...at Christmas, visions of guar gum dance in your head. ...you've ever had to give a doctor a crash course in Celiac 101. ...you weep at picnics, parties, receptions and fast food joints. ...you weep at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. ...you've ever "brown...
  25. Hannahsue--I agree with Nini. You have the family history, a doctor who seems to believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are gluten intolerant--will more test make that much of a difference? If you already tried gluten free for a short time and felt significantly better, then there is your answer. If only the US knew what celiac disease was when I...
