    ARCHIVED Ugh--doctors!

I ran into this problem 24 yrs ago when I was so sick and the doctor told me I had the flu. Well, I got pregnant and found out it was the birth control pills making me sick and that doctor told me that the pill is 99% safe and I just had to be the 1%! Of course then, doctors never looked for celiacs. Might I add that my daughter, that pregnancy, was born...
  2. My understanding is that you start out gluten sensitive and it can lead to celiac disease--celiac disease is the final stage. It doesnt matter anyways--if you are gluten sensitive or gluten intolerant--you still are very ill. Deb
  3. Read the ingredients--if it says 100% coffee and nothing else, then it is fine. Be very leary of flavored coffees, they do many times contain gluten as do flavored teas. Always read the ingreds, never take anything for granted. I just found this info on an MSNBC website, by Phil Limbert: Hidden sources of gluten: Many vitamins and medications can...

    ARCHIVED Visit To A Dietitian

LLRD--my sister is a dietician and celiac also. We have both been gluten-free for over 4 yrs now. Yes, it does sound like celiacs to me, if not celiacs then I would imagine that you are gluten intolerant. Deb
  5. Nature Made is gluten-free and I have taken it for years now. Last week I was in a Puritan Pride store and they claim their vitamin is gluten-free, but it has barley grass and truthfully--I dont care if they think there isnt enough barley in it to constitute gluten--it's not up to them to decide how much is not enough for me. I wont purchase their vitamins...
  6. I only use Pantene and mine has amino proteins in it and I am fine, also very sensitive--so, I know Pantene is ok. I also take Tylenol--dont know that I have had gel tabs--I do take Advil Gel and they are gluten-free. Deb
  7. Dont think I havent been in the same spot as everyone of you. And not all of you are new to this idea--if you have been gluten-free for a month or so, I can understand. I have been gluten-free for over 4 yrs now and I still grieve the foods I miss, but I dont cry about it, I dont stay away from friends. You cant have the food, that's all there is too it...
  8. I know this will probably get me some not so kind responses, but here goes. QUIT feeling sorry for yourselves. I was sick with celiacs my whole life. I was told it was in my head, that I had IBS, colitus, nervous stomach, agorophobia, anticipatory anxiety--you name it--everything except celiacs. I was sick nearly every night that I was pregnant with my...
  9. Poppet--go to google and type in..... celiac support groups in the UK.. see if anything pops up and then go to those group sites and ask for a list of safe products there. We cant really tell you from the US because our products have different requirements then yours do. I use Pantene shampoo--Soafsoap products------check out this site: www.clanthompson...
  10. I know just how all of you feel. I probably have been gluten intolerant my whole life and celiac for a good share of it. My sister ate dirt at 6 yrs old--a symptom of vitamin deficiency--she was finally diagnosed at 43 yrs old--I was 46 then. I have never had an official diagnosis because I am the "hypocondriac, IBS, colitus, nervous stomach, too much...
  11. I too have to be very careful with soy/corn. I can eat corn as a veggie and it doesnt bother me at all. I cant have it processed in anyways--corn flour/soyflour both make me ill--I can tolerate soy lecithin and margarines as long as I make sure that soy is not the only ingredient--they say that the proteins in oils are gone from the heating process to make...
  12. I use Walmarts brand of Gas-X------Equate Gas Relief, Extra Strength--its gluten free and works very well. Deb
  13. Cornbread is right--a celiac can never have gluten--it will always do damage, even if the person doesnt have outward symptoms. I can eat barley without knowing it, but I know it is still doing damage inside. AND, no I dont eat barley, it was something I didnt catch at the time. I had a vitamin company last week tell me barley is ok for celiacs--they did...
  14. Well--I cant eat burger anymore--I stick to chicken breast and very white pork--sometimes tuna and salmon. I cant do gassy veggies--no broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, etc--no tomatoes in any shape--not processed or fresh. I stay away from greasy foods too. Beef is well known for causing stomach troubles--it just sits and rots in our tummies...
  15. I made a turkey with stuffing for my family for Christmas last year. I made gluten-free cornbread stuffing and perfectly good gravy with gluten-free flour. We had yams, veggies--everything was gluten-free, nearly everything anyways. It was great, except that was the day I found out I can't tolerate cornmeal and yes, it was gluten-free, I checked. You...
  16. Have you had your B12 levels checked. Many celiacs have a very hard time with B-12 levels and maybe your iron too. Ask the specialist about having these levels checked. My iron is low right now and I am cold all the time. Feel better hun! Deb
  17. Hi Ken--I feel there is a connection. I feel I have ADD and I have a son that has ADD and many other probs. I feel that ADD is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, which by the way, celiacs causes chemical imbalances. I had severe panic attacks, agoraphobia, anticapatory anxiety--which all went away after I went gluten free. Deb
  18. Hi Dad--I was from Michigan, living on Long Island now. Since you have a computer, google--celiac support groups in michigan--that should give you a local support group to call and they may be able to give you names of doctors. If not--pm me and I will get in touch with my sister and see if she knows of any good doctors for you, she is a celiac and a dietitian...
  19. Geez, I'm sorry, I cant seem to help anymore--I hope your doc can help you too, I just know I have read somewhere about this being a problem for celiacs--maybe you could email Dr. Green at Columbia University and ask him--I do believe he answers--maybe I can find a link for you--Deb
  20. i sent this to jknnej and now i will add it to this thread----deb I didnt call you or anyone else an idiot--i said that sometimes when a newbie comes in and asks a simple guestion, that they are made to feel like an idiot--here is the post i made--page 3 of the skeptics thread: I have been on this board for a long time and I have always been ready to...
  21. This is the first time I have heard another mention this--and yes, it's another symptom of celiacs--my sister and I, both celiacs, lost out voice the same summer and we were hoarse the entire summer--we now have deep raspy voices--that was when my boys were in little league and their sons are playing now--Deb
  22. Gillian--I dont call it a diet--I call it a lifestyle--i never say diet--I may say I have to stick to a special type of diet, but I dont want people to think this is a weight loss skeem-------as for the newbies, some of them dont know that some of us were so sick--some find out by accident that they are celiacs and they dont know real pain as of yet and with...
  23. I do not bait anyone--thank you--Deb
  24. I ALREADY POSTED THIS IN ANOTHER SPOT, BUT I THOUGHT IT MAY JUST GET MORE ATTENTION HERE--SO HERE GOES: I have been on this board for a long time and I have always been ready to help anyone--I am a moderator on this board and I quit coming here for a while because I was so sick of the nit picking going on--I am not going to name names, but I was finding...
  25. I have been on this board for a long time and I have always been ready to help anyone--I am a moderator on this board and I quit coming here for a while because I was so sick of the nit picking going on--I am not going to name names, but I was finding that a new person would come in and ask a perfectly innocent guestion---like, "can i have .........?" and...
