ARCHIVED Rehoboth Beach Delaware
Lauren M replied to mominbaltimore's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Rehobeth is close to Bethany Beach, right? If so, I can give you some great suggestions! - Lauren -
ARCHIVED Alti Plano Gold Qunioa Cereal
Lauren M replied to LRgirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The orange date (or something like that) is also good. Have to agree with JayT though, the apple raisin one is quite tasty. You can always doctor up the plain one with some maple syrup or whatever strikes your fancy. Nothing like some nice hot cereal to get your day started during winter! - Lauren -
ARCHIVED What Do You Eat For Breakfast?!
Lauren M replied to LittleZoe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's kind of expensive, but especially on these cold days I really like a nice warm cereal to get me going in the morning. I miss my oatmeal (though I have tried the gluten-free kind!), but if you're not willing to take that risk, check out: Open Original Shared Link Again, it's on the expensive side, but I really like the apple raisin kind. It has a decent... -
ARCHIVED Garlic Bread Or Breadsticks
Lauren M replied to StrongerToday's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Sounds like something my family makes that I ate pre-Celiac dx. We called it "cheese toast" - just take a slice of bread, spread butter on it, then sprinkle garlic powder and parmesan cheese (just good ol' Kraft from a can) and put under the broiler. Yummy, I bet the combo of parmesan cheese and garlic would make even gluten-free bread tasty! - Lauren -

Too funny, Packard I was almost exactly like Stef - pre-diagnosis my body craved comfort foods that were, quite literally, poison for me. I always thought that was odd because so many people who have Celiac say that pre-diagnosis they naturally preferred gluten-free foods. Definitely not me! If I only I knew then, what I know now.... - Lauren

ARCHIVED Girl Scout Cookies - Samoas
Lauren M replied to kbabe1968's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ooooh, by far my favorite Girl Scout cookie. One of these companies should recreate the entire Girl Scout line with gluten-free versions. I'll take some peanut butter patties, too! - Lauren -
I'm not familiar with too many places in the Inner Harbor area, but definitely check out Austin Grill's website. I've been to the one in Bethesda and their food was AWESOME! Then again, I love Mexican food. - Lauren

ARCHIVED The Most Delicious Home-made Gluten Free Bread I've Ever Tasted...
Lauren M replied to mamatide's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I think I must have the flax seed MEAL. I wish I had kept the bag, but I wanted to keep it in the refrigerator so I put it in a plastic canister. I remember the bag saying that you could use it to substitute for some of the oil in recipes. Now that I'm pretty sure I have the right ingredient, I'll have to give this bread a try - Lauren -
Haha, that's awesome, Stef. I actually work at the Outback in Frederick, Maryland now. I used to work at the Outback in Deptford, New Jersey while I was in grad school in Philadelphia. One of my managers there was super excited one day, and couldn't wait to tell me that he was getting gluten-free beer for our store! I told him that was fantastic, but...

Yes, definitely ask for the gluten-free menu, or specifically say the words "gluten-free." I work as a server at Outback, and if someone simply requests a salad "without croutons," it may still be tossed in the same bowl as others. If I eat at Outback, as an employee who sees the backstage operations, I have GLUTEN-FREE written in BIG letters on my order...

ARCHIVED The Most Delicious Home-made Gluten Free Bread I've Ever Tasted...
Lauren M replied to mamatide's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have a question about flax. Is flax seed meal the same as flax? I bought something awhile ago, it was Bob's Red Mill and came in a white bag. I, of course, poured it into a separate container to put in the refrigerator, and threw away the bag. I think it's flax meal, but I'm not sure. Would regular flax look like seeds? - Lauren -
Kraft now makes a ready-made cheesecake filling. I eat it crustless, but I suppose you could crush up some shortbread cookies or whatever to form a crust and then just pour the topping on. You could even get creative and add some type of fruit topping. - Lauren

ARCHIVED G/f Valentines Day Chocolate
Lauren M replied to Mark2728's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I posted on the other thread that I found the ORGANIC boxes of Whitman's and Russell Stover chocolates are marked "Gluten Free" right on the front of the package! I had to buy them, and they are quite good. I too was missing the yummy boxed chocolates, but both Whiman's and Russel Stover's regular (not the organic) are processed on shared equipment with wheat... -
I know you weren't thinking of mixes, but I have to echo Ang's recommendation. The Namaste spice cake has the carrot cake variation right on the bag and it is beyond awesome! I too added raisins, plus walnuts, and used plain ol' Pillsbury cream cheese frosting. Heaven. - Lauren

ARCHIVED Valentines Candy
Lauren M replied to hez's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just saw at Wal-Mart both Whitman's and Russel Stover's have Organic boxed chocolates that say GLUTEN-FREE right on the front! Very cool! I think that both companies use shared equipment for their regular boxed chocolates, but the ORGANIC ones must be different. Yay! (I bought them for myself, I'm not waiting for Valentine's Day ) - Lauren -
ARCHIVED Hair Growing Faster?
Lauren M replied to ReneCox's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I know it sounds crazy, so I rarely tell anyone, but I swear that since I went gluten-free, my hair has changed texture and has become semi- CURLY! It had been stick straight all my life. It's really one of the only changes I noticed, too, how strange! - Lauren -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Vegetarian "meats"
Lauren M replied to sewfunky's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Gardenburger's Black Bean burgers and (Soy) Flame Grilled Burgers are marked gluten-free right on the box, as are Franklin Farm burgers, and I find both in regular grocery stores. Whole Foods, etc. also have gluten-free burgers. Quorn is also really good - the "turkey" roast and "chicken" tenders (not breaded) are both gluten-free. I also love tofu... -
ARCHIVED Outback Steakhouse Or Applebee's
Lauren M replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The Outback's garlic mash are fresh made - definitely not from a mix. They use heavy whipping cream, and sauteed garlic (yes, prob in butter) and potatoes (on which they leave the skin). I'm not sure of exact ratios, but they sure are tasty! - Lauren -
ARCHIVED Trying To Gain Weight...but It's Hard.
Lauren M replied to Anonymousgurl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Ha, it takes awhile to "distribute" - but I do find that when I move around, the bloating "deflates" so to speak. Also, I've been quite active lately, as a waitress on my feet and carrying heavy trays which has CERTAINLY helped my "chicken arms" as I call them - I can't fit my fingers around my bicep anymore! (you may think I'm kidding, but seriously - that... -
ARCHIVED Trying To Gain Weight...but It's Hard.
Lauren M replied to Anonymousgurl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Oh my goodness dear, do I ever know what you're talking about! I hate the way I look when I'm too thin, and like the way I look when I'm a more normal weight, but when I became sickly thin, it was very difficult (mentally) for me to allow myself to gain weight again. I desperately wanted to, but held on to the restricting eating patterns I developed as... -
ARCHIVED Got Sick From Outback gluten-free Menu
Lauren M replied to angel42's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Oh boy, no pressure Laura! Also - broncobux is right about the baked potato. Good general rule, I think. I would order mine unopened, just as a "better safe than sorry" precaution, even at Outback. - Lauren -
Would love to! I am the Publication Management student who took an interest in your book awhile ago Feel free to email me the questions, LMaruskin@email.msmary.edu, or you can email me and I can give you my phone #. Cool, I would love to be able to help! - Lauren

I love love LOVE Quorn! My family had the Quorn turkey for Thanksgiving dinner, and even the meat eaters enjoyed it! I also find it insulting when people say, "Your diet is limited enough, why don't you just eat meat?" I don't tell other people what they should or shouldn't eat! My nutritionist is understanding and supportive, and we even went to the grocery...

ARCHIVED Wegmans
Lauren M replied to Justin087's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I heart Wegman's! I am so sad that I'm moving away from mine, but I heard they recently opened one in Hunt Valley, MD. - Lauren
