ARCHIVED Dairy Free And gluten-free Butter?
mmaccartney replied to VydorScope's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you can tolerate soy, we use Earth Balance. I've not found anything that doesn't work properly with Earth balance instead of butter. Personally, we think it even tastes better then butter!! But then perhaps that is due to te fact that we haven't had butter in our house for 4 years now!!! -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Results -> Questions
mmaccartney posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I just got my results from Enterolab, and they confirm everything I've thought even though the "standard" medical tests were confusing: Fecal Antigliadin IgA 52.5 (Normal Range <10 Units) Fecal Antitissue Transglutaminase IgA 20 Units (Normal Range <10 Units) Quantitative Microscopic Fecal Fat Score 58 Units (Normal Range <... -
ARCHIVED Milk - Alergy Vs Intolerence Vs ?
mmaccartney replied to VydorScope's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
An immediate reaction is typical of an IGE (allergic) immune response. Though most milk allergies I've run into are hives, swelling, etc. My families Immunologist (Allergist) recommends the skin prick test over the blood test. The reason is that the blood test can pick up "noise" in the system and obscure the results. -
ARCHIVED Beware Of Soy!
mmaccartney replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Here is one that supports *both* sides of the argument: Open Original Shared Link BUT, right now it seems that all scientific, controlled studies show that soy is BENEFICIAL. There is some stirring, and some controversy that some components of soy MIGHT be "bad". Studies must be done to prove or disprove those claims. I do have to comment about... -
ARCHIVED Why Go Through Endoscopy?
mmaccartney replied to radman's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had the serology done, why not it was covered by insurance and was only a blood draw. My mistake was starting the gluten-free diet first, and only my IGA was positive. I also had the endoscopy, but in my case it showed nothing. BUT, did they sample the correct location? Did the laboratory analyze the sample properly? etc etc etc. I think they still... -
ARCHIVED Pillsbury Frostings
mmaccartney replied to patticake's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There may be more, but for these I know that they are gluten and dairy free. Pillsbury "Creamy Supreme" Frosting Vanilla - UPC: 51500 76080 Chocolate - UPC: 51500-76050 Pillsbury tells me that they are gluten and dairy free. I cannot recall if they are on dedicated lines or not, but for such a common flavor sold all over the USA I can't imagine... -

ARCHIVED Enforcement Of Labelling Laws
mmaccartney replied to kari's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
OR they can list it buried in the ingredients as: Blueberries, sugar, fructose syrup, whey (milk), high fructose corn syrup, contains less than 1% of modified corn starch, pectin, kosher gelatin, sodium phosphate, malic acid, natural flavor, calcium phosphate. I'm only boldfacing it to highlight, the manufactorer does not have to highlight it. -
I'm not a chef, though the longer I'm celiac the more of a chef I am becoming ! I found this on the internet: ====================== Clarified butter is also called drawn butter. Simply defined, clarified butter is unsalted butter that has the milk solids and water removed so all that remains is pure liquid golden-yellow butterfat. The advantages...

ARCHIVED Rice Krispy Treats
mmaccartney replied to flagbabyds's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The kellogs rice krispies may contain gluten, depending on where you are. My understanding (Please check for yourslf to be certain) is that rice krispies in the USA have gluten, while the rice krispies in the UK (England) are gluten free... BTW: I hope that you caught your sister before she actually ate some!!!! -
ARCHIVED Bob Evan's Brand Products (In Stores)
mmaccartney replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Packaged foods are the same way, the manufactorer is allowed to list the ingredient "buried" in the ingredient list, or in an allergen statement at the end, their choice. Always read carefully! -

ARCHIVED Gluten Free In-flight Meals?
mmaccartney replied to erin24's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I flew on Continental last year, they have a gluten free meal option on their website, and if you call it in. However it does contain Dairy items. I have dairy issues so I simply opted for their "Fruit Plate" option. Its great, just a plate of fresh cut fruits. I brought some other items just to tide me over as well... -
ARCHIVED "gluten Free" Definition In Europe
mmaccartney replied to CMCM's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
A simliar situation occurs in Australia. I was using a boullion "ultracube" from Massel, Open Original Shared Link as the cubes are 100% vegan (even the beef and chicken!) and indicated Gluten Free right on the package! My family checks everything due to over food allergies, and when we queried Massel, we got this response: ============= Thank you... -
ARCHIVED Crackers Anyone?
mmaccartney replied to Eva12's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You mentioned Nut free. Ener-G told me that they have two processing centers, one in the US, and one in Isreal. The Isreal facility is Nut contaminated, and unfortunatly the crackers are processed in Isreal. I would love to find something, there are many great gluten-free crackers, but I cannot find one that is gluten-free, nutfree, DF, and egg free for... -
ARCHIVED New Here...please Help!
mmaccartney replied to Veronica's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your husband is correct, and I support making your whole house gluten-free. I did the same with my home. My wife and younger son can have gluten, myself and my oldre son cannot. We made the entire house gluten-free, and even replaced all of our kitchen equipment (perhaps a bit overboard, but I'm sick of being sick!). Regarding your mother. Talk about the... -
ARCHIVED Dove...
mmaccartney replied to AmandaD's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for posting this. I have no visible symptoms (other then the fact that I'm doubled over in pain on the floor, or running to/from the bathroom, or cannot move my fingers/hips/shoulders!) from my celiac, so I haven't done the inventory of household items, just food. Dove is a popular brand in my house, knowing that they label properly is great news... -

mmaccartney replied to momandgirls's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've been searchnign for a "milk"chocolate for some time as well, BUT without the MILK part!! I came across ChocoSoy on the internet the other day. I don't know where to order it from, but it looks promising. The other thing I was thinking about doing was to try and make milk chocolate using a soy milk instead... Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Bad Reaction To gluten-free Breadcrumbs?
mmaccartney replied to RoseNNJ's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, there are allergens in there, and a face breakout souds like hives..?? Sounds like Eczema, etc. Common allergens: Soy, Eggs Not so common: Rice, yeast Even the banana can cause this type of reaction in people. Have you ever had an allergy test? IF you're face is breaking out, and it doesn't seem to be DH, then I would check an allergist... -
ARCHIVED Major D All Day Today - Panic Over Work Tomorrow
mmaccartney replied to DingoGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm no expert, but I believe that Celiac, as a autoimmune disease, gives coverage under the Americans with Disabilities Act. If that is indeed true, your employer must make reasonable accomodations for use, such as allowing for you to take rushed bathroom breaks, or locating you closer to a restroom. I've seen lots of changes take place from the ADA, but... -
In short, the answer is YES! It depends on what you can tolerate though. Me, I can tolerate some dairy both topical and ingesting it. I choose not to eat any dairy (why tempt fate?) however I dont necessarily exclude dairy from my topical products. BUT my children must avoid 100% of dairy whether topically or ingesting it. For them, even the most minute...

ARCHIVED Extremely Confused
mmaccartney replied to averyevansmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If dairy is a problem (casien or lactose) then yogurt is out. There are soy yogurts available if he can tolerate soy. Check into it, I like to eat a kind I get at Trader Joes, as well as a kind produced by Silk Open Original Shared Link If ice cream is something he'll miss, there are many soy ice creams out there. I like the kind from Turtle Mountain...
