  1. I see that many are using separate sponges on their separate pots and pans. I have not done this (reasoning that it all rinses off), and now I'm concerned that I could be taking on extremely small amounts of gluten. Is there a consensus about separate sponges?

Correct, it does rinse off.  If a gluten pan, I hand wash and then run it in the dishwasher.  A sponge does not last more than a week in my sink, before it's tossed and a new one appears.,,,due to bacteria and germs, rather than gluten.  Or use a plastic scrubber and run it in the dishwasher when you run it.

  2. Hi.

My grandmother have strange symptoms during her lifetime, but never tested for celiacs.

I have the DQ2 so I think I inherited the gene from mother or father. My aunt tell me my grandmother have stomac and liver problems, anemia, weakness, was underweight all lifetime.

Is it possible she was maybe celiacs ? She never stopped eat gluten so.... if a celiacs don't stop eating gluten what's happen ?

    Thanks.

Hi Whitefairy.  You MAY have inherited a gene associated with Celiac from your family, but that does not mean that you will develop Celiac.  But you should be aware.  If you develop symptoms associated with Celiac, get some test done. If not, continue on.  :D

  3. As a newly diagnosed celiac, shopping is frustrating.  And it takes much longer!

The worst are products that should not have a gluten substance but do according to their labels:

Nuts (this after I bought the only thing from a vending machine that I thought was OK)

    Trail Mix

Quinoa side dishes (lists wheat flour!)

    Oatmeal

    Spanish Rice

    Polenta

    mango sauce

    baked beans

    BQ sauce

the list goes on and on

Sorry, just felt like whining!  :o

    Whining is allowed.

Sometime, it's just as easy as switching brands.

Ancient Harvest Quinoa is gluten free (I cook mine in HerbOx chicken bouillon)

Quaker Oatmeal has never bothered me, although there may be a risk of cross contamination

Spanish Rice, is so easy to make - I never buy it prepared.

Polenta - should be just corn.  I love my grits

    Mango Sauce ?

Baked Beans - B&M or Bushes BBs

BBQ Sauce - My all time favorite - all of Sweet Baby Ray's are gluten free

Soy Sauce - Kikkoman's has a gluten free option as well as LaChoy.

  4. I applaud Carrabbas!  They are adding some new exciting things to their menu.  And, regarding gluten free pastas in restaurants....well, even at home it's mediocre.  Why pay money for the same in a restaurant (ie. Olive Garden, yuck)  There are so many other new options at their restaurant.  It's nice to feel normal.  Thanks Carrabbas!

BTW - I have heard that if you bring in your own pasta, they will cook it for you, with all the safe guards.  That's pretty accommodating.

    Thanks Karen for posting this.

  5. I have eaten Van's waffles every day for many years.  What do you put on the waffle?  Perhaps a shared butter container or non gluten free syrup, shared jelly?  Or perhaps, it was one of the other ingredients.  Some times, we never find out.  I would put them aside for some time and then try them again later.  If they continue to bother you, maybe you can pinpoint the issue.  But so often, it's will remain a mystery and just something that you body does not like.

  6. I just called the company and spoke to a customer service supervisor. She said the change was made in July. 2014. I guess the new stuff just got to my store. I told her about the thousands of people who could no longer use their product. No reason for the change that she could find. Maybe if a whole lot us us complain they will change it back. She did say they log the comments and turn them in to (somebody?) week WE can make this change.

We can make this change.  Who's in?

  7. Sometimes you have to make your own judgement calls.  I feel that MOST things can be washed well with soap and water. If I owned a roller, it would be marble as it would help keep the batter/dough cool as well as  easily washed.

Before your kids, or other kids delve into the gluten free play dough, ask that they wash their hands well (perhaps with supervision) so that the play dough can be used for another day. :)

  8. Another technique I use at my pharmacy is having them add a note to my file that pops up when the Pharmacist is verifying, that says "Please consult with patient before filling an existing RX with a new NDC.  Please keep same manufacturer if possible."  This way, as I am on a lot of meds for my health conditions, it makes everything easier to keep track of.  Helps put it in their face a little bit, so ask them if they have something in their system that will show a note each time something is filled.

Yes.  And I do think they can flag your account as gluten fee as well. I know my pharacist personally and she always verifies for me. It helps to know your people. :)

  9. If using a shared toaster oven,  I would wash and scrape the top tray, clean. I use a shared toaster oven daily. The top shelf is mine, the bottom is his.  He is very careful and I am.  It seems to work out.

Van Waffles are my daily breakfast wih peanut butter and marmalade.  You could smoosh and pan fry, throw an egg on top...with bacon, eggs, peppers, onions or what you find in your fridge, opportunities are endless.

Or just simply micro, with syup

    Enjoy

  10. I wasn't lactose intolerant until shortly after I was diagnosed.  Lactaid tablets worked fine for me, also...and then they didn't.  I could only tolerate a small amount of hard cheese if I took the tablets.  Overnight (and I'm not exaggerating) I could no longer drink Lactaid milk, and I couldn't handle lactose free products.  I became dairy intolerant that quickly!  It's been a year, and I still can't tolerate anything with dairy.  Just sharing this with you because I didn't believe it could happen quickly, but it can.

Hey gilligan-- Here is 'My" personal theory.  When my Celiac was triggered, it also triggered a lactose intolerance that remained after healing.  When I removed the gluten for some time (months), I could still react to the lactose specifically. I kept it out of my diet for several weeks, yet now, almost ten years later, I can handle some in slim moderation without the tell-tail bloat. I do love cheese. :-/  Others can handle it with no problem when the villi heal.

  11. When I touch things, I get glutened..either my Tide, or my Dawn Passion fruit dish soap is the culprit. And it's kind of a creeper to where I start questioning myself..is it gluten or my imagination. Then I get inside my head trying to convince myself I'm not crazy.

When I touch something with gluten, its a different reaction than when I injest something with gluten..forget about it.

So, I'm trying to determine if I need to try another brand of dish soap and if so, what brand could I purchase that maybe someone has tried that's affected by touching or washing with products containing gluten..please and thank you.

PS..and please, if you are thinking of telling me that its not possible to be glutened by touching things..please..be kind? Thank you

Hey MsBella - Welcome to the forum.  We all have been in your shoes.  Like "holy moly" (not my choice of words, but whatever) Every thing seems to fall apart and your world gets crazy.  My advise to you is to take things a step at a time.  Eat cleanly, with fresh fruits, veggies, un-preseasoned meats or seafood, rice or potatoes.  There is much to choose from.  Go light on dairy for the time being.  To address your post.....it would be unlikely that Dawn, Palmolive or other dishwashing products would contain gluten. And as a newly diagnosed person with Celiac, I am well aware that EVERYTHING FREAKS YOU OUT.  We have all been there, been there  done that, kinda thing.   Touching or cleaning your pots and pans will not make you sick.  But, if you have not been gluten free for a very short time, most foods will make you sensitive.  Until your intestines have time to heal and absorb food normally, most intake will be an issue.  Be careful, and in time you will see improvement.  Hope this helps. :)
