    ARCHIVED Twins

I am an identical twin. I have one of the genetic markers for celiac. (HLA B8. It's not mentioned very often.) I do not have celiac, nor does my sister, but my youngest son does. I have no idea if any of my husband's family has any of the markers. Should my sister or either of her boys start getting symptoms, they'll be tested immediately. Edited to add...
  2. Well, I suppose that since you went gluten-free in December that by spring any celiac damage could have been spotty at best since the healing starts immediately upon going gluten-free. If they only took a couple of samples that would explain the so-called negative biopsy. Many people on this board will say that a biopsy confirms celiac but never rules it...
  3. Don't think I am a horrible Mom after you read this! A couple of years ago when Walker was learning to ride his bike, we'd taken him down to the park and he rode his bike into a bush. He laughed about, he was a good sport. Later that day, we were out in front of our house on our sidewalk and he had me holding the seat of his bike so it wouldn't...
  4. I'm a bit confused. Your signature says you were diagnosed with celiac in 2005, so when was the biopsy you're talking about? If it was a follow-up biopsy and there are no signs of celiac, then that's great. You're doing well on the diet, but you need to stay on the diet if you've been diagnosed with celiac. At least, that's my interpretation. Maybe...
  5. My husband is in Aspen right now working on the Winter X-games. He's doesn't have celiac, but our little boy does. Maybe you'll see him at the Piggly Wiggly looking for gluten-free Trix or what have you. (Aspen probably doesn't have a Piggly Wiggly. I just like to say it: Piggly Wiggly. It makes me giggly. )
  6. I'll say. When I was in elementary, when we finished tests we got to either read a book quietly or twiddle our thumbs. Oh the horror of the '70's! I'm sure not getting candy after a test was a violation of my Charter rights! (If we had a Charter then. In hindsight, perhaps I should have studied more. )
  7. I'm the spelling police. GrammAr. Celiacs drives me crazy, too, and it's a very short drive. Off topic a bit to say Beth, I always read your user name as EMC Master. And then finally realized that it's probably E McMaster. Molly, I think Lisa meant posting on the board by age 10.
  8. All you really need is a doctor's letterhead. No reason to get the doctor involved.
  9. I voted for Ty (between ages 5 - 10) he was diagnosed about 3 months before his sixth birthday. He's the only one of us with a diagnosis. (As for me, I'm 29 with 11 years experience .)
  10. I used real egg whites. Separated 'em myself. No bits of shell in there either.
  11. I'm glad I'm not the only one who nods off when reading bedtime stories. Well, they're 7 & 9, so I don't read bedtime stories anymore, but we do read together.
  12. You should all have it by now.
  13. No way! We can't be THAT close of relatives. I'll fight you for him!
  14. Hmm. I'm not an experienced enough baker to answer that, but I do know they have different properties. I use sweet rice flour for thickening gravy, etc. I do know a lady who uses sweet rice flour in lieu of any white/brown rice flours, and she's happy with the results. I'd wait for more replies unless you're willing to experiment.
  15. Canada Safeway emailed me the new gluten-free product list. It's an Excel document and looks pretty wonky if I try to paste it here. If you're interested, pm me with your email address and I'll send it along.
  16. Ditto what Laura said, but a clarification - Sandy is 2Kids4Me. It's confusing - we have similar user names and we're both from the same area in Southern Alberta. I don't know anything about dental problems and Celiac, so I can't be accused of helping anyone in that area.
  17. My sister used to work at a youth detention centre, and two of the kids there had stolen a canoe from Woolco one time. (They weren't in for that!) They just picked up the canoe and walked out of the store. I guess the philosophy being who the heck is going to steal something so big? It must belong to them. Then at my first job after college, a guy I knew...
  18. Re: the question of flours, for my bread (2 so far, first one pictured in my avatar) I used: 1 1/4 cups gluten-free flour which consisted of: 1/2 cup brown rice flour, 1/2 cup sorghum flour and 1/4 cup tapioca starch. Then the rest as indicated in the recipe. (1/4 cup garfava flour, 1/2 cup potato starch, 1/4 cup cornstarch, 1/4 cup flaxmeal) So I...
  19. Hmm. I may be a "Black Irish" as well. Dark brown hair, brown eyes, white white white, but turn a darker shade of pale in summer. AND, my maiden name was Farrell. (No relation to Colin...that I'm aware of, so don't ask for intros.) It used to be O'Farrell but was dropped a few generations ago upon arriving in Nova Scotia. Too ethnic. Don't ask me how I...
  20. I hope that's before her awful plastic surgery! Open Original Shared Link
  21. I think Tiffany is the celebrity - going to elaborate extremes, like pretending to live in Seattle and enjoy hiking and yoga, but in real life...
  22. I got the mom Hershey milk chocolate chips and she mixed that with a bit of canola (I think) to get it to flow. I provided them with gluten-free animal crackers and pretzels and they provided fruit. Then when it was time for cake, she used a ladle or big spoon to take out chocolate and pour it over the cake with candles so there wouldn't be any cake crumbs...
  23. Soft and Chewy Breadsticks (by Roben Ryberg - The Gluten Free Kitchen) 1/4 cup shortening 3 tablespoons honey 2 eggs 1 tablespoon yeast 1 cup unflavored yogurt 1/2 cup potato starch 1 1/2 cups cornstarch 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons xanthan gum 3/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 teaspoon vinegar Topping: Kosher salt and...
  24. It doesn't happen to my son (on diet for 1 yr 5 mo). Maybe it's just how she is.
