  1. Hearty, not healthy.
  2. Sounds yummy!
  3. Ditto. (Except spilling the milk. )
  4. So sorry, Nikki.
  5. We have a problem with soft corn tortillas in that we all think they taste terrible . We stick with the hard taco shells. Too bad because I've been craving chicken fajitas, haven't had them since Ty was diagnosed a year and two months ago. They just don't taste the same in a hard taco.
  6. My son has been on the diet since August 2005. He NEVER EVER had any GI issues. No "D", "C" or stomach aches. We discovered that he has celiac because he was extremely anemic. We are not a gluten-free household, but the only gluten in our house is bread for the other 3 of us for breakfast or lunch or pasta if we are having noodles. If we are having buns with...
  7. My son is also asymptomatic. (He is not diabetic.) We use Yoplait yogurt. I do buy things that are made in a facility with wheat, but never buy the may contain traces products. I am pretty confident that with the litigious nature of certain consumers that the companies are cleaning the lines pretty thoroughly. I hope that Sandy (2Kids4Me) will be along...
  8. Excellent! By coincidence we have a Chianti Cafe here (completely unrelated, I'm sure, as Boston is a bit out of the way of Calgary) and we love it there. Ty always tells the server he wants "the usual". Then he has to explain that the usual is Fettucini Alfredo. Then we have to prompt him - what kind of Fettucini Alfredo? Oh yeah. Gluten Free. They use rice...
  9. Lori- don't get me started. My husband and I always have arguments about this. I think that M&Ms are the superior candy and he thinks smarties. Then he starts the debate about how M&Ms are acceptable only if they are peanut M&Ms. I personally think the original M&Ms are superior and now I want some.
  10. Oh Tracy, the sauce made gobs and gobs, so you'll have some for the freezer. Meanwhile, the mix cupcakes look just like cupcakes! Whew! My husband did say that he loved having a giant bowl of crumbled up cupcakes handy in the fridge maybe with some ice cream, or cool whip or both . I suppose that explains why there wasn't much left for my "lunch dessert...
  11. Just the other day I was at an Italian market and picked up some biscuits with "Senza Glutine" on them and a wheat sheaf with a line through it. I read the ingredients and there was no wheat/rye/oats/barley/malt except a disclaimer at the end said: May contain other gluten containing cereals. The product was made in Italy and imported through a company...
  12. Hi Tracy. Here you go. Soft and Chewy Breadsticks (by Roben Ryberg - The Gluten Free Kitchen) 1/4 cup shortening 3 tablespoons honey 2 eggs 1 tablespoon yeast 1 cup unflavored yogurt 1/2 cup potato starch 1 1/2 cups cornstarch 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons xanthan gum 3/4 teaspoon salt 3/...
  13. Well, we can't serve them to the kids coming to the party, but we can crumble them up with ice cream . They taste all right, but to look at them - ugh. Andrea, I appreciate the sympathy. At least the family can still eat them. Jessica, you may have a point with over mixing. It said to beat the sugar and eggs until fluffy, so I just kept them beating...
  14. Today I tried the Annalise Robert's Chocolate Fudge cake, but cupcakes. (The recipe said I could do that.) They're horrid! They were rising nicely when I turned the oven light on at 10 minutes left and then when the timer rang they were all sunken in the middle. The batter tasted great and they seem to be cooked, I don't know what they taste like but...
  15. Thanks! Today is fun lunch day and I will have to go fight the staff for the microwave. I do get a funny look from time to time, but I just say, "I have to heat this fun lunch, it'll only take a minute." I have never booted anyone out of the micro, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.
  16. Sandy- I can't find the severe allergy protocol on line. I found the Alberta School Act, but nothing about allergies. Can you provide a link, or the gist of the protocol? Does it cover Celiac? Your kids would probably be covered because of the diabetes and Aspergers, but what about plain ol' celiac? Ty's school had a teacher with gluten intolerance and she...
  17. Happy Birthday Lisa!
  18. Canadian Smarties are chocolate sort of, but not quite like M&Ms. Canadian Rockets=U.S. Smarties. Rockets are gluten-free.
  19. Glad to hear it. It sounds like your Mom is becoming a bit more supportive, too. Will she be driving you? (I can't remember if you are in school in Yorkton or Regina.)
  20. I will be at hockey in the morning and at work all afternoon, so no. I'm interested in any info you glean though.
  21. Yes, I know this sounds completely anal, picky, whatever. As a nursing student you should mention that it is Celiac NOT Celiacs. That drives me batty. Along with the word signage. Signage is not a real word. The word is signs. We don't need better signage at the intersection, we need better signs. Yes, I know I'm wierd and freaky.
  22. My gluten-eating son had a period of time where he had one powdered Carnation instant breakfast daily. After about a week he had a bit of "D", so it may be too much "whatever" in there. Now he has them periocially, but never daily and he hasn't had any more problems. The powdered vanilla, chocolate, cappuccino and strawberry are gluten-free in Canada - or...
  23. Congratulations!
  24. Potato starch or flour. That's just crazy enough to work.
  25. My sister sent me a recipe for Baked Potato soup that has 2/3 cup all purpose flour. (She sent the recipe at my request - I knew it contained flour - she's not being insensitive.) I sort of think the flour might just be for thickening. Would I be able to do a straight substitution with sweet rice flour or should I use a blend of something? Thanks in...
