  1. Rusla, the big Mars bars have malted barley in them. Don't eat them. A while ago Ty said, "What's in a Mars bar that I can't have?" so we read the label. It was a regular sized Mars.
  2. I don't know why they wouldn't be okay. The ingredients are just plain beans? Or are they in a sauce of some kind? If it's just beans no problem, a sauce would certainly be suspect.
  3. You don't say how the diagnosis came about. In our situation, Ty had had several blood tests and then an upper endoscopy. Before the endoscopy we sat down and explained that the doctors were looking for damage to his intestine that was caused from eating gluten. We explained what gluten was and said that if he did have celiac that he would not be allowed...
  4. Stephanie - were you in Florida or California? We are going to Disneyland in California in December. The boys know that I have bought and paid for a trip to be taken sometime "later". Glenn travels a bit for work, so we will go to the airport with the idea of dropping Dad off for a trip and then we'll just all go. Sneaky . I found some info on the Calgary...
  5. There's no viz on the link, just the copy. I would have approached the story differently, but I live it through Ty. It sort of made Celiac sound like it's no big whoop, but it is. I would have touched on the inconvenience of it and the label reading and unexpected places for gluten to be...example Twizzlers, Smarties, Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes, salad dressing...
  6. If you check the labels on the Hershey box (Reese's, Glossette's Raisins, Kisses, Oh Henrys and Hershey bars) they seem okay. All the Nestles "safe to share" are not safe for you (or Ty).
  7. Shoot. I was outside on the deck painting trim. I'll watch it tonight at work. Good thing I have connections. I see in the script it doesn't have you quoted as saying you get DH. I am pleased it mentions creams, shampoos and soy sauce.
  8. Not me. Hockey and then work. Looks like the story might be on today. There's a script on the website, but no video attached yet. Open Original Shared Link 4th item: Celiac disease is more common than we think.
  9. Hugs Lisa!
  10. It's funny you should mention the Chinese restaurant. I was talking to a lady after school whose sister has celiac and gets quite sick if she gets any gluten by mistake. They went to that restaurant on the weekend, they all ordered gluten-free food, and the sister didn't get sick. Then she mentioned that she ran into a high school friend of hers whose daughter...
  11. Anyone with a satellite dish (in Canada) can watch any of the CTV affiliates. The news depends on what time it is where you are. CTV Calgary has a two hour block of news between 5-7pm Mountain time. There's one from 5-5:30 a slightly different cast from 5:30 - 6pm and then the big news is from 6-7pm. Sports starts around 5:50 so it will be on before then...
  12. The nearest cup/ml measures are: 1 cup = 237ml (people converting from imperial would use a 250ml measure) 3/4 cup = 177ml 2/3 cup = 158ml 1/2 cup = 118ml (people converting from imperial would use a 125ml measure) 1/3 cup = 79ml 1/4 cup = 59 ml 1/8 cup = 30 ml 1/16 cup = 15 ml 1 tbsp = 3 tsp = 15ml (tbsp=tablespoon tsp=teaspoon)
  13. We had a successful Thanksgiving, too. My SIL hosted it, and everything was gluten free except for buns (Ty had his own crescent rolls) and dessert (Ty had his own mini-pumpkin pie).
  14. That's what we do. Cool and re-use. What's the doughnut recipe? Cakey or the good kind?
  15. Okay, okay....I take back my comment about the gluten-free store being a set. I'll just say that I've never seen one in real life.
  16. Good thinking! I haven't seen her on the board for so long, she slipped my mind. And Lori (SkokiMom) is asymptomatic so that would be a boring interview (no offense, Lori!). I should email Carriefaith, too.
  17. I sit corrected. I've never seen a whole store, but certainly sections. In fact the health food store kindly labels celiac friendly stuff with a red dot sticker and the words "celiac ok". I wonder where the story originated. For everyone who couldn't get the video to play I had to click a litte circle next to the file type I wanted to play. There was...
  18. Just watched the video. Good story, but that gluten free store?! Must've been a set. No such thing in real life. Maaaybe a gluten-free section.
  19. I emailed the assignment editor at work (CTV) some suggestions for Celiac Awareness month, and to my surprise he said he loved it and is assigning a reporter to do a story (or more, I hope). Last year, he deleted the suggestion. Anyway, in my pitch to do the story, I suggested that they speak to the Calgary Association and Dr. Butzner or Dr. Scott at...
  20. This gluten-free Wacky cake is good. I use the Carol Fenster sorghum/corn flour blend and it doesn't taste gritty at all. Can't remember how long to cook for cupcakes, though. Wacky Cake Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups gluten free flour mix (see below) 1 1/2 tsp xanthan gum 1 cup sugar 3 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla...
  21. Good question. I wouldn't mind knowing the answer either.
  22. I don't know where you're writing from, but I haven't yet found a gluten-free worcestershire sauce in Canada. I make my own. Also the only gluten-free Caesar dressing I'm aware of (also in Canada) is Renee's. I've never eaten at Outback (except the once years ago and haven't been back since when I ordered my steak and potato found out veg cost extra ) so...
  23. Nikki-UK is your son's biopsy still on for tomorrow? They delayed it a week, right?
  24. In our family my one son has celiac. My husband, older son, my Mom and I were tested and none of us have it. No one on my husband's side of the family has been tested, and neither my dad, brother, nor sister were tested either. Presumably if my husband or I had it, then our siblings would get tested.
  25. So I guess it's gluten free if it's in, say, a Kraft product, but if you're at a Chinese restaurant, perhaps avoid it. No, I have no idea if Kraft uses MSG, I simply used it as an example because they are a label-friendly company.
