ARCHIVED Cleaning Kitchen After Diagnosis
cyclinglady replied to snowmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Dishes do not need to be sterilized just because of celiac disease. Gluten tends to be sticky. Heating it up is not going to make gluten go away (except burning it off like on a grille or cast iron pan, but at those temperatures (over 600 degrees), you'll ruin your dishes ?. A good scrubbing on non-porous surfaces (does not include plastics or wood)... -
ARCHIVED for those waiting for a positive biopsy and a questions about adrenal issues
cyclinglady replied to ironictruth's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I only test positive on the DGP IGA, but in my case, my biopsy was positive. Remember, the celiac blood tests are not perfect. They are just one of the tools used to diagnose celiac disease. At this point, your best choice is to completely embrace the gluten-free diet and give yourself six months to a year to heal (hopefully not longer). Not going gluten... -
ARCHIVED Does this sound like DH?
cyclinglady replied to annacat4's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Anna, I am sorry that you are struggling! I do not have DH, but I can suggest you read through our forum's DH section. I am not a doctor, but your rash sounds more like eczema based on the way it presents. In any case , you can opt for a skin biopsy, but make sure the doctor does it properly for a DH diagnosis (see DH section for exact procedure). You... -
ARCHIVED celiac disease in East Tennessee
cyclinglady replied to Arasmas's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
The "Find Me Gluten Free" app is so useful. I always look for the reviews written by celiacs! I am sorry to hear about your friends. Mine have stuck by me, fortunately, It took a while for them to get used to me just ordering a coffee or glass of wine when we go out, but now they don't think twice. They also do not take offense when I bring my... -
ARCHIVED for those waiting for a positive biopsy and a questions about adrenal issues
cyclinglady replied to ironictruth's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am sorry that you are still struggling! But, as you said yourself, you are probably not avoiding gluten. Consider really buckling down (e.g. Not using your boyfriends pots and pans, looking at EVERYTHING that you injest, including lotions, not going out to eat, avoiding processed foods for a while, etc). No sense worrying about other possible health... -
ARCHIVED No Relief: 4.5 Years and counting..
cyclinglady replied to Alok's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Before I settled for a refractory celiac disease diagnosis, I would insist on a complete celiac blood panel. Like I mentioned before, I tested positive to only the DGP IGA test. Make sure (100%) that you do not have celiac antibodies. If the complete panel is negative, you might assume that you are either diet compliant and/or something else (e.g. Food... -
Gluten stays in your body for as long as any food, depending on your transit time (varies per person). It is the antibodies that are circulating in your body that is causing possible damage to the small intestine. Researchers say to maintain a gluten diet until all testing is complete and the doctor has given you a diagnosis. http://www.cureceliacdisease...

ARCHIVED Rice Intolerance and Other Foods
cyclinglady replied to gluten-free Andee's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Not to discount your allergies or intolerances (I have many myself), but when was the last time you had a full celiac antibodies blood panel? Celiac symptoms can wax and wane, so it is a good idea to get checked annually to help see if your disease is still active (diet compliant).- 4 replies

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Cheerios to Hit Canada this Summer

This is obviously just a publicity release from General Mills and picked up by the newspapers. The Canadian Celiac organization does NOT recommend Cherrios! Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Need some help with symptoms
cyclinglady replied to EBLOOM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My tiny niece was just diagnosed with Crohn's (she did not present with typical symptoms). With our family history of celiac disease, her GI was at least able to rule out celiac disease. It was/is just a simple blood test. BTW, a pill cam is what found the Crohn's damage. Your doctor should be looking for the source of your issues. Keep advocating...- 19 replies

ARCHIVED Need some help with symptoms
cyclinglady replied to EBLOOM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I went to a GI for a routine colonoscopy (Yep, hit the big 5-0). I had anemia my entire life (for as long as it has been recorded). I also have a genetic genetic anemia that was masking iron-deficiency anemia and I was going through menopause. I had NO tummy issues as long as I avoided dairy and eggs. But my savvy GI insisted I had celiac, actually...- 19 replies

ARCHIVED Need some help with symptoms
cyclinglady replied to EBLOOM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Great advice from all, but I would like to add....document. There is nothing like the power of the written word. A nice letter expressing your concerns and requests can go a long way. A verbal request can easily be dismissed and not added to your patient file. I use our patient portal (email) and have sent certified letters in the past. It is your right...- 19 replies

ARCHIVED Not diagnosed yet, but could I have celiac's? (symptom list)
cyclinglady replied to kcducttaper's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Stop! If you suspect celiac disease, you MUST be on a gluten diet, yes, gluten diet in order to get the celiac blood and endoscopy/biopsy. It has just been a week, so start eating donuts (or whatever) again. I urge you to research more before you just go gluten free. If gluten free, chances are that you'll get a negative result and you'll never really... -
ARCHIVED could i have had celiac disease for 30 years without knowing?
cyclinglady replied to Librarychick's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My HIDA scan revealed 0% functionality and my gallbladder was infected. I always wondered if my Gallbladder could have been saved if had I been healing from celiac disease. If you can keep your GB, keep it! -
ARCHIVED Gene test required
cyclinglady replied to MelissaNZ's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The genes test only helps to rule out celiac disease. The biopsy is still considered the "Gold" standard, at least in the U.S. -
ARCHIVED Blood pressure spikes
cyclinglady replied to MichaelDG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Celiac symptoms can wax and wane. I just had anemia and no tummy issues when I was diagnosed. When I got glutened last year, I had horrible intestinal issues. A follow-up celiac antibodies confirmed that gluten was the culprit. The best thing is to keep educating yourself about the gluten-free diet to help you avoid future glutenings. Give yourself... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosis biopsy ,update
cyclinglady replied to manaja's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well, it can only get better now! I am sorry that you have celiac disease, but it is nice that we can essentially heal ourselves with a good gluten-free diet. Stick with whole foods and avoid processed until you feel better! Hugs! ? -
I have osteoporosis and have had a few fractures, but since going gluten free (and allowing plenty of time to heal), my bone last bone scan shows that I am holding steady. I hope the next one will show improvement, but at 55, it might not happen. I do plenty of exercise and eat a very good diet rich in the minerals I need to help build bone. Karen...

ARCHIVED in process of diagnosis
cyclinglady replied to christy73's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This is not going to help the original poster, but this info should help you. Open Original Shared Link "How long does it take for the tTG blood test for celiac disease to be normal? It depends on the test. One of the tests used most often, tissue transglutaminase (tTG), has a half-life of six months. In other words, it should drop by a half... -
ARCHIVED Genetic test--anyone understand this?
cyclinglady replied to mama.liz07's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms

ARCHIVED Genetic test--anyone understand this?
cyclinglady replied to mama.liz07's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I know very little about gene testing as I was diagnosed without it. So, I am not even going to comment on it. However, I was sure my 19 year old niece had celiac disease or the family non-functioning gallbladder curse. She tested negative to the complete panel, had a HIDA scan, endoscopy and a colonoscopy. All were negative. She is tiny. Short and very... -
ARCHIVED Any help at all would be amazing, I'm desperate! :)
cyclinglady replied to Sarah.e.may9602's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Any change in your diet can change your bowel habits. For example, vets will tell you to phase in a new dog food instead of an abrupt change. Eat too many Oreo cookies and your stool can change color. Too much broccoli can make you gassy. Try to stick with naturally gluten free foods for a while until your body adjusts. Avoid processed gluten...
