  1. That's how I was diagnosed -- low iron stores. Anyway, I was told to take iron for a couple months. Vitamin C helps with absorption. He should be checked in a couple of months. As his intestines heal, he probably won't need it. In the meantime, probiotics are good and add gummy multi-vitamins, omega 3's and calcium. Once the tips of the villi go...
  2. Well, I definitely disagree with Gemini regarding giving up foods! I did give up gluten and I miss it. Maybe it's because for years, I had already given up milk, garlic, nuts, mushrooms, and eggs! It's HARD to give up even more foods. Granted those that I just listed were easier to give up because they made me sick -- but not gluten! I didn't have any...
  3. I don't wear one for celiac disease, but I wear a RoadID bracelet when I walk, run or ride my bike. Just in case....at least my family can be contacted if I'm unconscious.
  4. Hi, I have celiac disease and my husband has been gluten free for 12 years (no formal diagnosis). Here's a few answers to some of your questions. I'm sure others will follow! Gluten free cars Daughter (not gluten free) must wash her hands when entering the house (gets rid of the germs too!) All playdate snacks are gluten free (homemade popcorn...
  5. I just received a nice complement from my sister-in-law today! My niece has been having tummy issues that echo my old gallbladder symptoms. I typed up a family history medical tree and sent it off to her mom. My niece's new gastro was amazed that a patient came in with a complete medical history. Within seconds, he was willing to order a celiac panel...
  6. You might want to pack a picnic lunch and eat it between the wedding and the reception. You can still dance and have fun socializing! Be sure to pack pieces of gluten-free cake or cupcakes, so you and your daughter won't feel left out. You can always have drinks/sodas during the reception. We did this a few years back (hubby gluten-free). We didn...
  7. I just drink coffee and have a piece of fruit. It's cheap and convenient.
  8. I haven't tried them since I reacted shortly after my diagnosis in March. Does she react to quinoa? I wasn't able to tolerate quinoa or oatmeal. So, if she's okay with quinoa, I'd try the oatmeal.
  9. Me too! My husband loves casseroles. I'm the Crockpot Queen! Just bought some chicken breasts on sale and plan on making Chicken Ala King with that white sauce recipe. I serve it over mashed potatoes. But tomorrow, I'm cooking a pot roast in the crockpot. I'll use the leftovers for either tacos or make Shepard's pie. It's still hot where I live...
  10. Hey, don't forget other gluten-free goodies that kids love. Just purchase those little clear cocktail cups at the grocery store and fill with: Dirt Cups: Chocolate pudding, gluten-free Trader Joe's cookies crushed and gummy worms Cubed Jello and Whipped Cream, Sprinked with gluten-free candy Layered Jello Cups Banana Split Cups with Pudding Yogurt Parfaits ...
  11. Did you get your thyroid re-tested? A few weeks ago, your TSH was near a 5. That's too high even if it's within range. Plus, you mentioned anxiety and eye pain. I think you said that one eye was popping. You should get a thyroid antibodies test. It's possible to fluctuate between hyper and hypo. I should know, it happened to me this past year and it...
  12. I'm hoping that Loves to Travel answers this one! I haven't made sugar cookies since I've been gluten-free. The Land O Lakes recipe looks fine. Find an all purpose flour that has rice as the main flour. Don't use Bob's Red Mill as it has garbanzo bean flour that would be too overpowering for sugar cookies. Chill the dough to allow the flours, eggs...
  13. Welcome, Emily! Did you know that there is a section within the forum just for teens and young adults? I bet you'll be able to "talk" to someone your own age who has CD too! Check it out! I'd talk to you, but I'm an old Mom. My daughter is 12 but she hasn't been tested yet. Have fun!
  14. Sorry to hear that you've had a rough couple of days! Just like getting oxygen on an airplane in an emergency, you have put it the mask on the adult first and then the child! Please take care of yourself (we moms are so bad at this)! I just wanted to point out that at this point in your daughter's healing that the tiniest amounts of gluten can be...
  15. Ha! I agree!
  16. My doctor recommended something plain like Cream of Wheat cereal. The other items you described would have yeast and/or other items you could react to. I suppose the pasta is just wheat. Don't eat anything else on top of it! I can't speak about your cholesterol question as mine has always been ridiculously low (e.g. 112 total) which I attribute to...
  17. Sorry, I don't have any tips to speed your recovery except to increase your fluids. It takes me about seven days to recover, but everyone's different. Take care!
  18. Congratulations, that gives me hope! Did they do a biopsy? How bad was your original diagnosis? I'm not supposed to go back for a year. Just wondering if that's an insurance thing or my doctor thinks it's going to take that long based experience (and the fact that I"m old ) I was a Marsh Stage IIIB -- "moderate to severe damage".
  19. Read the rest of the earlier posts. I can speak only for Armour Thyroid (been on it since 1997) and it's gluten free. There are plenty of gluten free choices. I also recommend doing more research on thyroid meds outside of this site (we're really into Celiac Disease!)
  20. Sure, if your intestines are still in a constant state of inflammation from frequent glutenings or require a longer healing time (e.g. one year). Some veggies are just too hard to digest. Best to cook them. You may have developed a food intolerance. But, I suspect it was the alcohol. I've been gluten-free since March and I still can't tolerate alcohol...
  21. If you have the space, keep them in the freezer. They'll last forever, okay, maybe 10 years. In your pantry they'll last a year or so. Many will go rancid fast.
  22. Gee, your body fat analysis shows that you're in shape. Why would you want to add more fat? Plus, your BMI (according to US Government chart) is normal. Where did you get that analysis done? How was the fat calculated? Calipers? Submerged in a tank? Or one of those things they put up against your arm at a health fair? Do a little more research on...
  23. FYI -- I"m not a doctor! Based on your blood work the low figures indicate "tiny little red blood cells" also known as Thalassemia. It's just a genetic anemia that may or may not cause any symptoms. It looks like your hemoglobin is okay at 14.5 so you're not anemic based on the Thalassemia. But, then I see another hemoglobin figure at around 5! Is that...
  24. When I went for a routine colonoscopy (yes, I'm over 50), the gastro looked at my chart (anemia, Hashi's) and said, "I"m going to order a Celiac blood panel, and if it's positive, I'm going to do an endoscopy". I was shocked! I had no abdominal symptoms. I told him that "No way, I can't have celiac disease -- my husband has had this gluten free thing for...
