  1. I can't answer your specific question about gene testing. as it's not my area of expertise. Gene testing is usually a diagnostic tool that can help diagnose/eliminate Celiac Disease or an intolerance when there are issues with the Celiac Blood Panel or biopsies. It just tells you that you could someday develop it. Here's an article that explains it...
  2. Are you getting enough Vit. D? I take more D on top of my Calicum supplements (1500 mg./day per doc). I think I remember that you had pretty bad intestinal damage (a little worse than mine), so more at this time, might be better for the next year or so.
  3. Thanks! I'm running 3.4 miles every other day, but still not on my bike. You should replace your shoes or at least the insoles every six months to a year. When your knees/feet start to hurt, you typically need new shoes. I stock up on my favorite shoes when they are on sale or the model year has been discontinued. Make sure your shoes fit your feet...
  4. I'm adding my two cents -- I think you're getting a small amount of gluten. How's your daughter doing? Is she having symptoms too?
  5. Thanks! But, I must confess that my cream is now soymilk. Since I'm allergic to garlic (plus, I can't tolerate mushrooms), I can't use those foods anymore in my old recipes! Yikes! Try cooking without garlic and that includes onions and leeks (same family). Anyway, I make do with different herbs to flavor.
  6. Here are my triggers: red wine, garlic, dairy, nuts. Sounds like you know some of yours. My face breakout would always occur within 12 hours. I used to take Alpha Lipoic Acid (supplement) and my doctor prescribed it in a cream form that came from a pharmacy in Colorado. Seriously, the antibiotics can help a bit, but you can't take them forever without...
  7. I was diagnosed via blood test and biopsy in March, but my husband's been gluten free for 12 years just based on the advice of my allergist and his GP (PCP). Does he have celiac? Who knows? What we do know is that he feels much better and can tell when he gets accidentally glutened. He'll never do a challenge because he knows gluten makes him sick! ...
  8. You'll have to continue to consume gluten in order to get a definitive result on a biopsy (endoscopy). I'm not a doctor -- or an expert on interpreting results (but we have a few on the forum, so give it a few days).
  9. How did the nystatin challenge go?
  10. Blood test: mildly celiac Biopsy (seven weeks later): Marsh Stage IIIB (moderate to severe damage), diagnosed in March 2013 No intestinal symptoms Low Ferritin Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (dx over 15 years ago and have been on treatment since then) Broken vertabrae doing NOTHING 13 weeks ago! I didn't have visible symptoms. Just went for routine colonscopy...
  11. Could be, but I have both those brands in my house. My husband can eat them without a reaction. It appears to be just me. I'm hoping to try them soon.
  12. My family is still eating rice. I just purchased another 50 pound sack at Costco. Since rice has a stable shelf life (one to two years if opened and up to 30 if stored properly), we keep it for earthquake preparedness too. I'm just rinsing my rice a few times before cooking which is what all my Asian friends have been telling me to do for years! ...
  13. No, there's nothing special about gluten regarding energy. Something else must be going on. If you think you have celiac disease or an intolerant, you should get tested. At the same time, ask about an iron test, including ferritin, plus, a thyroid panel. Those are the only two things that I can think of that would slow you down. Protein is what...
  14. Careful! I have rosacea -- which is only triggered by certain foods. When I was first diagnosed some 20 years ago, the dermatologist prescribed antibiotics which I took for two years and it made me very sick! I developed all these food allergies, lost lots of weight (am little to start with), folks thought I had cancer. So, the antibiotics might help...
  15. We can't/won't even eat anywhere for breakfast because of cross contamination issues. A chef told us that even some oils they use for eggs/hashbrowns/bacon has gluten in it. He offered to cook our eggs in a skillet using butter. We felt comfortable with him, but that's rare (at least in our experience).
  16. I don't know. You have to read the ingredients and if you have a milk allergy/intolerance like me, you need to avoid that too! You even have to watch out for prescription meds because many may have gluten. Your pharmacist should be able to help your or you'll need to contact the manufacturer.
  17. No pain for me except when I got the fracture.
  18. I fractured a vertebrae 12 weeks ago doing NOTHING! I have osteopenia too, but they suspect osteoporosis where my fracture occurred, but the bone scan didn't cover that area. Am taking calicum and vit. D supplements and have been walking, but just started to run again, finally! To prevent it from becoming worse: supplements and weight bearing exercise...
  19. Well, it might be the sausage. I can only have fresh -- one without any nitrates etc. Same goes for hot dogs or bacon. I don't buy lunch meats either if they have preservatives (and most do). You just have to freeze it within a few days if you open the package. I vomit like clock-work if I eat a regular dog! So you might have developed an intolerance...
  20. My endo and colonscopy were done at the same time and I was unconscious (lucky me). I just went in for a routine colonoscopy (I asked for one since I'm over 50) and they found celiac!
  21. Since I have to take thyroid meds in the morning, I take my iron with vit.C right before I go to bed. I'd also strongly advise, that you start off every other day or every two days and build to one a day. Iron can cause constipation for some.
  22. If you don't like the chicken pot pie version with the Bisquick topping, just blob on mashed potatoes making a shepard's pie. Yum!
  23. Was that the lab's website? Each lab has different ranges. Ask your primary since he/she thinks you have celiac.
  24. The longer you stay away from gluten, they worst the reaction will be if you accidentally consume it. At least that's what has happened to be and I was symptom free prior to my diagnosis. I think you'll know. Then in six months to a year (or whenever your doctor orders it), you get a celiac blood panel done to see if the figures have lowered. That...
  25. Here's a link showing "cups" vs. eggs: Open Original Shared Link But, 1 egg, plus 1/2 cup egg whites is a lot. I'd just just whole eggs or an egg replacer (for vegan or allergies). Not sure about the bread maichine. It does a lot of kneading and gluten free bread doesn't require a lot of kneading. It bakes more like t a quick bread (e.g. banana...
