  1. I didn't have an GI symptoms and only had anemia (low iron (ferrritin) levels) and thyroiditis. I had back pain and recently found that I had a fracture. Perhaps a bone density scan? Children can develop osteoporosis with malabsorption issues (e.g. celiac disease).
  2. Karen's right. You need to see an ophthalmologist, ASAP. Perhaps, some punctal plugs will help with dryness if other possible problems are ruled out. In the meantime wear your glasses! Here's a dumb question.....how old is your contact cleaning solution/case?
  3. Thanks for the update. How are you feeling, though?
  4. I'd try to find a national organization. I belonged for years to a mother's group which was national. At least we had access to liability waivers, etc. which is critical if you meet at someone's home. On the other hand, we started a school foundation from scratch and it was difficult setting up everything for the first time (bi-laws, banks, taxes, etc...
  5. I read on about.com (author Jane Anderson) and old threads here on this forum that cast iron is fine. You do need to run it through the cleaning cycle of your oven and then re-season it. I haven't had any problems. I did toss out all teflon though and treated myself to a few new pans. I kept all my old stainless and just scrubbed it well.
  6. Yep! For seven weeks I indulged in gluten. Bought my favs at the grocery store, went out to eat and consumed a loaf of sourdough bread per day (I kid you not!). At the end of seven weeks, I was ready to let go of gluten.
  7. No clue, but the chef actually showed the cooking oil package to my husband.
  8. Since you said you are borderline, it might be best to go forward with the endoscopy and colonoscopy to get a definite diagnosis and to know just how much damage you may have. I had gone in for a routine colonoscopy (over 50 yeah!) and the GI suggested an endoscopy because he suspected celiac disease based on my thyroid and anemia issues. You should...
  9. Anne -- You can still cook "southern" and be gluten free. Try cooking just simple foods like grilling or roasting meat and serving it with rice/potatoes and veggies. Make stews or chili and serve with salad. gluten-free cornbread is pretty darn good! Serve spaghetti, but make a batch of gluten-free pasta just for you (just use a dedicated strainer...
  10. Mine was a weak positive. My endo/biopsy showed moderate to severe damage (Marsh Stage III . I viewed my blood test as proving I had celiac disease. In the meantime while waiting seven weeks for my endo, I ate gluten like crazy. By the end of those gluten-filled weeks, I was ready to give up gluten for life. I still went through a grieving process and...
  11. A granola bar sounds like oatmeal which will have little or no gluten (except for cross contamination during processing). Be sure that it's a cereal bar with just wheat flour or bags of pretzels or Goldfish. At least you won't have to worry about your older kids getting peeved at the youngest for having the household go gluten free! Hang in there...
  12. My gluten-free husband was traveling and was talking to one of the chef's at one of the hotel chains. While requesting gluten-free eggs (to be prepared in separate pan), the chef mentioned that the oils he was using had barley in them. He reminded my husband to make sure future egg orders are fried in butter. Who would have guessed?
  13. Your GP should be able to order a celiac blood panel. Search the forum for the actual tests in case your GP is not up to speed. I don't think two weeks will make a difference, but be sure to eat gluten until you've completed all testing.
  14. I can't give much advice other than if you're going to have to eat bread/gluten buy the best and savor it!
  15. Maybe it is phlegm located at the back of her sinus cavity and it's slowly running down the back of her throat. But, she hasn't mastered the art of "hocking a loogie" yet. A skill easily mastered by boys!!!! I have this issue when my allergies (especially to mold) kick up. It's disgusting! You can actually see the phlegm sometimes hanging at the...
  16. I've only run a 1/2 marathon a year ago, but I've done Century Rides for years. I was training for a ride when I fractured my vertebrae doing nothing (complications from Celiac Disease). As a result, I had to stop running and riding and was left with water aerobics and walking. I've now started up with running and am up to 3.4 miles each time. I am not...
  17. Good to hear. I'm just doing exercise and taking a calcium supplement that does contain some D3, Magnesium & Zinc per my doc. I'm hoping I'm building up bone!!!!
  18. I'm allergic to several foods like nuts and dairy, so almond milk is out for me. I recently tried coconut milk and it made me sick. I have no problems with soy or corn though. Try keeping a food journal and do some research on a four to seven day food rotational program. It worked for me (calmed down my responses/inflammation) years ago when I went...
  19. Here's a few things to insure you get the most out of your visit: 1) type up a list of current symptoms 2) type up a health history (including lab results if possible) 3) type up a family history tree 4) take notes and ask questions. I've done this and doctor's are so happy! My niece went to her first GI visit clutching her family history in hand...
  20. No, really? It sounds like a scam. 600 items from one hair sample? I think not! Your cheapest bet is to keep a food journal and note your symptoms. Try eliminating the most popular allergies or intolerances (I think corn, soy, nuts, milk, wheat (ha!) families). Take them out for a week and then add them back into your diet slowly. There are plenty...
  21. That's strange for the GI to tell you to go off gluten for four weeks after the blood test. What if you end up doing an endoscopy? You'll need to be on gluten for the endo/biopsy. Your tests should be back with a few working days (depending on the lab). Be sure to get all copies of all lab reports. It's good to have on hand and you should keep all...
  22. Great suggestions. I agree, it's all about the volunteers. We have a scout who is allergic to peanuts/nuts/milk and some vegetarians. We have accommodated them all since they were Brownies (Cadettes now). My daughter does not have celiac disease but I do. I attended campouts/jamborees and I would worry about the dish cleaning procedure too. Your daughter...
  23. When I'm really tired in the afternoons and feel the overwhelming need for a nap, it usually means that my thyroid isn't functioning well. Have you ever had it checked?
  24. My bottle of Ocean only contains salt and two preservatives that appear to be gluten free. Without seeing the ingredients on the bottle, I can't promise that yours is gluten free. Try googling each ingredient.
  25. I didn't have any abdominal symptoms when I went for a routine colonoscopy (yeah, over 50!). GI doc looked at my chart and saw that I had been anemic and had Hashimoto's Thryoiditis (treated). He guessed that I had celiac disease. I tested positive on both the blood test and biopsy to my surprise. A few months later, I fractured my vertebrae doing...
