  1. Very inspiring! I'm glad your kids are independent when it comes to household chores. It's a gift, that's for sure. So, glad you are feeling better!
  2. Are you using it as a soup or a topping for something else? As a sauce, you can make your own and it only takes five more minutes. Use a white sauce recipe (butter, milk, starch/flour -- I use corn), add some celery seed, chopped up pre-cooked celery (steam in micro), a little white pepper and you're good to go! Sub out the celery/seed and you can make...
  3. Plan ahead for the next emergency. Talk to your pharmacist about "over the counter" medications you may need to give your daughter for any illness to insure it's gluten free. They can call the manufacturers on your behalf. Whew! I'm glad she's a little better!
  4. Did you use raw eggs? Children shouldn't eat them (or adults) -- especially since she already has a compromised intestinal tract! I guess you know that now.... All foods should be thoroughly washed (e.g. fruit) or cooked completely when you have a compromised immune system. Your daughter could easily pickup bad bacteria (like salmonella), or parasites...
  5. Not necessarily. It can be sign of another illness. Everyone's celiac disease symptoms vary (there's over 300 hundred of them!) and not everyone gets symptoms! Have you asked your doctor for celiac disease blood testing? Other blood work to rule out anemia, vitamin deficiencies? Tracked your food to determine what may set off your GERD symptoms (e...
  6. I agree, it was probably cross contamination. My last "glutening" was at a national chain with a gluten-free menu and they even had a gluten-free hamburger bun! If it's a very nice restaurant and the manager and the chef come over to talk to me, then I feel pretty safe. We've walked out of plenty of places went they give us lame answers to our questions...
  7. Here's a link from the University of Chicago's Celiac website that can answer your question: Open Original Shared Link That said, I had a "mild" positive on my blood test. Seven weeks later my biopsy (they took more than two samples) showed Marsh Stage IIIB damage. Now, I know exactly where I stand. I'll have a follow-up blood test and another...
  8. Was that a report from the lab or a "letter" that your doctor's office generates? If it's from the doctor, ask for the actual lab report. I'd want to know exactly what that number is. I insist on every single lab copy, report, etc. That information stays with me and has been so helpful over the years. I often type up a medical history (plus a little...
  9. Within minutes, I get indigestion and a few hours later I feel as though I have a "rock" in my stomach. Then within 6 - 12 hours, I can get a headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, body aches, fatigue that lasts for a week. Ugh! I've also started to experience extreme itching on my forearm, but no rash. Applying an ice pack seems to help. I'll...
  10. I still haven't got a definitive answer! I found that same website but that brand wasn't on the list. Please keep her very hydrated. If you're nursing, encourage her to nurse (that saved me many times). As long as she's still active and moving around, she should be okay. If she's lethargic, then she's probably dehydrated and may need to be hospitalized...
  11. I'm trying to find a definitive answer on the website, but am not successful so far. The ingredients look gluten free. Not sure about the flavorings, though. What about adult acetaminophen and break it up and put it in some mushed fruit (e.g. applesauce or banana). Try to keep the the children's dosage. You could do the same for Advil (ibuprofen) as...
  12. Add a little package of Nescafe Instant Coffee to your mix for a real treat! It really boosts the chocolate flavor and during my gluten days folks used to rave about my brownies (whether using a mix or from scratch). I haven't tried King Arthur yet (not in the stores where I shop), but I'm going to start looking..... Thanks!
  13. Your hemoglobin is good (not anemic). It was my low ferritin levels (when they did measure it) and my Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (high antibodies) that caught my GI's eye when I went for a routine colonoscopy. He recommended the celiac blood panel. So, do a little research on ferritin levels especially if you're an athlete. Low levels (even just within...
  14. I had a weak positive on my blood test and seven weeks later, my biopsy showed a Stage IIIB (moderate to severe damage to my villi). My iron levels (e.g. saturation) were always good. Only rarely, would they check my Ferritin levels and that's only when my hemoglobin dropped to a 7. Did the iron tests check for Ferritin? Low levels will cause fatigue...
  15. All excellent suggestions! I went to this link to check the Child's Growth Chart. You can plug in the numbers and get the percentile bracket and compare her to other toddlers. I just plugged in her weight from at 18.6 pounds when she was 14 months old. The results indicated (without head or length) that she was in the 20 percentile -- that's perfectly...
  16. That's great that they'll discuss it with you in person. I just got a phone call and literally no support. Since my husband's been gluten-free, it wasn't an issue for me, but I really feel for those who are just thrown into this diagnosis. Keep us posted.
  17. Yeah, give up pasta, but only for a few more months. As time goes by, you'll forget what wheat pasta tastes like. The rice pasta won't be so offensive then. Besides, gluten-free pasta always tastes better with a sauce. Switch to potatoes or hard squashes for now, to accompany your meat dishes.
  18. It's Costco's Kirkland brand, but as Karen said there are many specialty stores that carry grain free brands.
  19. For years, I purchased my grain free dog/cat food at my local feed store, but Costco now carries a grain free product line. My cat could not tolerate grains (he probably had celiac disease ) and later, my dog developed allergies as she aged.
  20. Here's a group that meets in Garden Grove. Open Original Shared Link
  21. I did, but you'd have to throw in Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (that was diagnosed almost 20 years ago. My blood test came back mildly positive but seven weeks later (after consuming a loaf of bread a day, I kid you not), my biopsy showed Marsh Stage IIIB.
  22. That's great. Glad you pushed. Sporadic low iron (Ferritin) levels and thyroiditis, were my only symptoms of celiac disease. Hopefully they did a complete thyroid panel (including antibodies). When I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto'sThyroiditis, only my antibodies were sky high. My TSH, T4, etc. were all normal.
  23. What about her other measurements? Head and body length. Are they on target? Have they changed? I'm a little confused. Is she 16 months old and weighs 18 pounds? I think I probably mentioned this before, but my daughter weighed 6.5 pounds at birth. At one year she was 17 and it took her until she was 24 months to hit 20 pounds. Doctor was...
  24. I'm assuming that you've been to a doctor and have exhausted all possibilities (e.g. thyroid, intolerances, ulcers (h. pylori), anemia, etc.). Most people need a definitive diagnosis in order to stay on a gluten free diet for life. It's a few simple blood tests (one draw) that will help diagnosis you. However, you must be eating gluten in order to get...
  25. Welcome! You definitely sound as though you have celiac disease. I"m sure others who are more savy on forum will post helpful input on the exact tests you need for a proper diagnosis. Until then, keep eating gluten! Good luck!
