  1. I use rice flour or cornstarch to thicken my soups.
  2. Okay, so I've been gluten-free for awhile (June 2005) and cf since Oct. 2005. I decided this June to try eating cheese because I love it. I felt great from June to Aug. Then as each day went by my stools got softer and softer and my hair started falling out again. So, I guess I have to accept the fact that I am indeed casein intolerant. If only my bm...
  3. I go to Planet Organic in Edmonton usually just for one or two items. I can't seem to leave the store with less than a full basket! There are so many good items to choose.
  4. I get anxious and jittery from gluten. It's a horrible feeling.
  5. Most aged cheeses, like cheddar are lactose-free. You should probably try an elimination test to determine if you are casein or lactose intolerant. If you can handle cheese, but not milk, you are most likely lactose intolerant.
  6. Buy direct from Kinnikinnick at the bakery. They even have many specialty items for us locals only in their store, like freshly baked pies, etc. And they are labelled dairy-free, which is a good thing for many of us. It's an awesome store. On another note, congratulations on another job offer in Alberta. I just graduated from the U of A and I'm...
  7. I was a former beer drinker, which I still miss dearly. But thank whoever for making gluten-free beer. I did the same thing as you and became a tequila drinker. The drinks sure went down fast and since gluten was giving me the hangovers before, I figured I could have quite a few. I've learned my lesson now and take it a wee bit slower.
  8. To add to the Canmore dining scene, I ate at the vegetarian restaurant diagonally across from Nutters, called Sun... something. It was delicious and I did not get sick.
  9. I can't believe he sold it. I remember reading an article in the Edmonoton Journal not long ago about his great family business. I figured it would stay in the family. Oh well, economics always rules the world.
  10. I've been there many times and it sure is a great store. There's a Nutter's in Red Deer too, right off the highway.
  11. I've seen Patak's in Alberta, but I haven't bought it yet. Patak's Canada has a website with a gluten-free section!
  12. Tinkyada makes jumbo shells! I saw them at a specialty gluten-free store I go to.
  13. I know how she is feeling. I was so sick everyday of my twenties. Both my blood tests came back negative, which by the way is very common even if you have celiac. However, I was sick of being sick, so I tried the gluten-free diet and I haven't looked back. It changed my life. I had many of the same symptoms as you describe. It is defifnitely worth a...
  14. It's delicious. The store I buy it at used to bring in small quantities and now they order two pallets every order and they sell fast.
  15. We always used the hammer and nail method when I was a kid.
  16. I was wondering what happened to you. Glad to see you back.
  17. That's really interesting about the possible cross reaction between dairy and soy. I used to just have soy, but I added cheese months ago. But the past three weeks I have been having gi troubles and I can't figure out why. So today I am stopping the soy consumption, but I will continue with limited dairy. Hopefully you and I can get some answers. I'm...
  18. My cats eat Natural Balance cat food.
  19. Well it's safer than getting shot in the face with a paintball! Those can hurt. If you are worried, maybe bring a bandana and wear that under the mask somehow or buy one of those disposable air masks to wear under.
  20. A lot of hard cheeses have low to zero lactose in them. From what I recall their Minute Rice is lactose-free. Probably a lot of their dressings are lactose-free too.
  21. Rice cakes or crackers and corn tortilla's make great bread substitutes. I survived on corn tortilla's when I worked out of town. Since you can't have cheese, you could put peanut butter, hummus, avacado, veggies, and/or meats on the tortilla's. You could bring a lunch bag with one of those ice packs. Put the whole thing in you hotel fridge overnight...

    ARCHIVED Opm

Thanks for posting. I was there about one year ago and they didn't have separate menu yet, but it was in the works. Glad to see I can go back now.
  23. I was just thinking about buying a breadmaker, so thanks for posting this. I love that it has a gluten-free setting.
  24. I know I'm not on here that much, but I really like reading your advice to others and to myself. You have been very helpful and I wish you wouldn't leave. But I do understand where you are coming from and your reasons for leaving.
  25. That's a tough one, but I would be a little worried. However, it could be just a cya statement. I personally haven't got sick from any of their gluten-free products, so I consider them a good company, or at least careful with the cc issues. But for myself, I would stick to their gluten-free products only, but I am very sensitive.
