ARCHIVED Biosilk Hair Products
bluelotus posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, I should have known better - when I first began using Biosilk (clear bottle, black cap) about 6 months ago, I wasn't feeling much better while being gluten-free. Although this lead me (rightly) to believe that dairy and eggs were the culprits, I stopped using Biosilk just in case. There is nothing listed in the ingrediants that is outright suspicious... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Diet And Other Allergies Help
bluelotus replied to Kimnash's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Do you use Rice milk? Lundenberg farms makes some, but check the ingrediants - I know they are corn, dairy, and gluten free (my problems). Try Enjoy Life products - they make bagels, breads, cereals, cookies, and snack bars. You can find them online. They don't use the 8 common allergens or corn or potato. Applesauce can be a great snack - Organic Wholekids... -
ARCHIVED Frustrated!
bluelotus replied to SherriRoy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I know nothing about refractory celiac, so I can't say much there. But, based on the above post, it sounds likely. I am writing b.c I wonder if you have considered other food intolerances? I felt better for a month or two after going gluten-free (and I know you haven't at all), but then started to get sick again. It appeared to be dairy. I cut that out... -
At dinner, bring tea (I bring my own b/c some aren't gluten-free) or get coffee (find out what brand) or wine. That's the easiest thing. Just wait, after you've been gluten-free a while then try gluten again, you'll get sicker than you've ever been. Seems to happen to some of us. You'll be ill enough that you won't want to do that anymore. A little will...

ARCHIVED Gf Brands, Mainstream Products, Or Pure Foods?
bluelotus replied to quantumsugar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I too am supersensitive. I eat mostly natural (non-packaged) foods - rice, meat, potatoes, veggies, fruit. For snacks/sweets, I buy gluten-free brands (ex. Enjoy Life is great, Nana's has a few good products, EnviroKids gluten-free cereal). I buy very few mainstream products - too many bad experiences, maybe from contamination on their lines? I now check... -
ARCHIVED Peppermint Extract
bluelotus replied to Kasey'sMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Usually its corn alcohol used in extracts - companies usually specifiy grain. As I understand it too, there is still a debate regarding the distillation of grain alcohol, so that would be more of a personal choice .......... Who's to say parts of that gluten protein don't break off during distillation to cause irratation - that's the contested part as I... -
ARCHIVED Absolut Vodka
bluelotus replied to killernj13's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I react to distilled grain products too. The processing is still debated, and my body's reaction tells me its not for me. You aren't alone. -
Grantschoep quote (not mine): [" As healthy eating continues to diversify, T.G.I. Friday’s restaurants understand that people have different nutritional desires. Although I do not have the recipe or ingredient statements available; currently, the nutritional information we offer is Net Carbs (listed on the Atkins® menu items) and other menu select...

Hi, In case you decide not to risk it at a restaurant, Amy's Organic (I think that is the brand name) makes veggie indian food and will specifically label their products as gluten-free. However, I don't know what their policy is on contamination. Hope this helps.

ARCHIVED Question Re: Accidental Glutening
bluelotus replied to lorka150's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am so OCD about things too, esp eating out and at other people's houses (or work)....so thanks for bringing that up, glad its not just me. I get worried about how well other's wash dishes (including my husband - I've gotten sick that way), how clean the inside of the microwave is at work (any little bits that will float/fall into my soup?), and I wash... -
Great idea, never would have thought of it!

ARCHIVED Casein Intolerance...
bluelotus replied to Rachel--24's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi all, I think the question has been answered by others but I will add my experience as well. Yes, I too have had gluten-like symptoms caused by other foods - specifically dairy, egg, and corn. Dairy was the first to cause problems, then 2 months later eggs, then 5 months later corn. After eliminating each, I felt better in a few days. Good luck. -
Yes, don't let them win. I am sure there are plenty of lawyers out there that would drool over this case. I am willing to bet that there are plenty of people out there willing to take your side, specifically lawyers and doctors. Good luck!

ARCHIVED Till I'm Blue In The Face!
bluelotus replied to Nicolette's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think part of it is that people have never considered food to be poisonous ..... how could something that brings them comfort be so devastating to someone else? And, the medical community does very little to rectify this problem. People seem so unaware of how food can affect the body, celiac disease or not. Just consider how a Gluten-free Casein-free... -
ARCHIVED Is It Hard To Be Gf And Vegetarian?
bluelotus replied to frenchiemama's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I also would find it hard to be a vegetarian, and it all depends on your pre-existing food conditions. I can't tolerate dairy, egg, or corn, so there goes some quality protein sources. Although, for me, vegetarianism would be for environmental purposes (general idea: animal are inefficent at converting plant protein into consumable protein for us, so we... -
ARCHIVED Potato Chips
bluelotus replied to bluelotus's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks again for all the replies. With this help, I definitely have no excuse for craving potato chips and salt any time soon! -
ARCHIVED Extreme Hunger....
bluelotus replied to Rachel--24's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just found this thread and am glad I am not the only one that has those odd hunger attacks. I too get dizzy, moody, sweaty, whatever when the hunger hits, and it comes on so fast! My father-in-law is a diabetic, so I had him test my blood sugar one night, and it was fine, so not too worried about diabetes. I have only been gluten-free since Nov. with several... -
ARCHIVED Nana's Cookie Bars
bluelotus replied to bluelotus's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Many companies seem to have problems with chocolate flavored gluten-free items - like the Glutino (sp?) chocolate breakfast bars - tasted like weird chocolate covered fruit. I might avoid the chocolate Nana's bars then. Enjoy Life makes a descent chocolate breakfast bar with crunchy rice pieces in it, and it does a great job holdling me over until lunch... -
Yes, please, I hope so. Its strange, but pop tarts are on of the things I miss the most, and I didn't even eat them that frequently. Any ideas would be great!

I don't have DH, so I have no idea what it is like. But, psoriasis is common for those with celiac disease too, however, I have never heard it described as painful. It is quite common to get it on the scalp, and it feels bumpy and may or may not itch (when it does itch, it might flake and the itchness can drive a person crazy). Other common places to get...

ARCHIVED Bbq Sauce Suggestions
bluelotus replied to specialdiets's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Just checked both sites, Annie's doesn't have a gluten-free bar-b-que sauce, and Edward and Son's doesn't sell one. Sorry about the wasted post, but maybe you can find additional sauces to enjoy from these others anyway. -
ARCHIVED Bbq Sauce Suggestions
bluelotus replied to specialdiets's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Not sure if they can fit all the specifics of your diet, but try Edward and Son's (www.edwardandsons.com) -they list which of their products are corn, soy, gluten, dairy, etc. free. I can't recall if they have a bar-b-que sauce in particular, but it may be worth checking out. I have also had good luck with Annie's Natural products (www.anniesnatural.com... -
ARCHIVED Nana's Cookie Bars
bluelotus posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Just as a note to all - I tried Nana's banana cookie bars last week and they are very good! I emailed the company and will post their response below. Looks like we have yet one more option for a (sort-of-healthy) snack! Thank you for your email. Our products do not contain Corn or Soy. We manufacture our No Gluten products on designated days... -
ARCHIVED Imitation Crab
bluelotus replied to bluelotus's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have tried real canned crab too, but couldn't taste it very well (don't necessarily mind this since I love nori!). I think imitation crab has a stronger taste, so I will keep my hopes up!
