  1. Go to Da Vinci's bakery. Its all gluten free! The owner is a bit weird, but her food is delightful! She makes the best gluten free deep dish pepperoni pizza and challah bread! www.wheatlessinseattle.com
  2. Don't forget to come back and tell all of us what the nutritionist told you (in case we need to correct her - LOL) Seriously, post again with what the nutritionist says.
  3. I "heart" bacon. I prefer Hormel's Thick Cut Bacon -- YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMY
  4. I have the Cuisinart one. It has a gluten free setting (though I only use the white and wheat settings - they cook better!) I recommend the cuisinart. All you do is mix the wet ingredients fist, pout them into the pan. Then mix the dry ingreidents, add them on top of wet. Then add yeast. Hit the button and forget about for 3 hours or so. Its been...
  5. Yes, they are. So is the deli salami, polish sausages and saurkraut.
  6. "What the movie says about the profit motive in health care creating an incentive to unjustly deny care is absolutely true. I worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield for two years. I was appalled to hear management proudly discussing their techniques for getting their claims denial rates up. They were actually proud of this, not ashamed!" This is the reason...
  7. 1. Do you smoke and have you quit? If so how much did you smoke? - I smoked for 13 years. I quit last year. 2. Did you quit before or after you went on a gluten-free diet? If you quit after, how long were you on the diet before you quit? Before and after. 10 years I was on the diet. 3. Did you have any adverse reactions when you quit...
  8. Ok, So I saw the movie last night. Moore focused most of the movie on people who had normal jobs (with health care) and suddenly lost everything due to sever illness. He makes Kaiser Permanente look like Lucipher (which they are). He focuses on the non-published atrocities of the US system (raising premiums so sick can't afford them, denying coverage due...
  9. I am going to see the movie tonight. Can't wait! Why would anyone think you don't love this country? You are exercising your first amendment right of free speech. Humans are not infallable. Therefore, the USA is not infallable. We have serious issues to deal with - one of them being health care. Always be weary of the people who claim our country to...
  10. How did you tear your quad? Playing soccer? I tore mine playing indoor soccer in law school - worst pain I had in a long time. It hurt with every step. To this day, I still pull that muscle when I play soccer and shoot too hard with that leg. Hope you feel better and welcome back! BB
  11. Ok, so the baking pan arrived! I made my first loaf of gluten free bread last night. I made Gluten Free Pantry's French Bread mix. One word - "DENSE" LOL It could have been much worse in my opinion. In all honesty, I think it might make for some great baguettes if I toast it and get creative -- maybe even some gluten free bruschetta...
  12. I eat Hebrew National Salami, Hormel Ham, Hormel Roast Beef, Oscar Meyer Bologna, Oscar Meyer Turkey. I really like Hormel Cure 81 Ham - that is the bomb (but kinda expensive). Boar's Head is good too!
  13. Charlene, Welcome to the board. Glad to hear about your positive dietary results and that the good doctor was doing some tests to assist you. FYI, you don't have to validate yourself on this board, but bear in mind that there are some people (like you) that have suffered for years and this board and their diagnosis has truly been a life saver. Some...
  14. Do what you want, but understand this - gluten-free menus and products are off limits in my book at airports. The restaurant is smaller and the chances of CC is FREAKING HUGE! Even worse, some rules that places abide by in normal settings fly out the window at airport restaurants (McDonalds does not have dedicated fryers in some airports). Don't eat there...
  15. Jim, Welcome to the board. Feel free to ask any questions you may have about celiac disease. To answer your questions: My mom has celiac disease. it is hereditary. My brothers refuse to get tested (they aren't the brightest folks in the world at times). Depending on who you talk to, the blood tests vary in accuracy. However, if you test...
  16. Woo-Hoo! I am ordering a pan online then! LOL Seriously, one day I just kept looking inside my breadmachine and wondering how it could be possible to make bread in there without making a mess and a bizarre loaf shape. I suppose I was having a "senior moment" at age 32...
  17. FYI, I got them at the new Whole Foods (its freking HUGE!) near Redondo?
  18. Wow... I bought a pack of these over the weekend in L.A. and I ate all of the cookies in a couple of hours Seriously good taste and seriously good cookie-texture...
  19. Da Vinci's Bakery www.wheatlessinseattle.org OMG, it is soooo good!! Try the deep dish gluten-free pepperoni pizza. Buy some of their wonderful gluten-free challah bread, garlic bread and fococcia bread! Make sure you go there! BB p.s. The lady who runs it is a bit eccentric, but she is a gifted baker!!!
  20. I make awesome Krispe treats out of cocoa pebbles. Chocolate goodness!
  21. Not sure, It pobably wasn't the bacon, but you never know... How long have you been diagnosed? Many newly diagnosed Celiacs have tummy troubles and pseudo-glutenings for as long as 12-18 months after diagnoses (sometimes it takes a while to heal and for the body to get back to being normal). I know I had a real tough time with greasy and fried items...
  22. I received one for Christmas 1.5 years ago. I think it must be missing a part. When I open up the machine (on the top) and look into the "baking area", it doesn't look like there is anywhere to put the wt ingredients (in a confined area) - it looks like it would go all over the place. Hence, I don't think I have a baking pan (or whatever parts...
  23. For the record, I have been "glutened" less than 5 times in the last 5 years. I think I went 2.5 years without issue once. Then again, I am meticulous about how I dine at restaurants. I always involve management and always try to talk to the chef when possible. If you want to venture out and try something new, go to a steakhouse and get a nice ribeye...
  24. It all depends on how much of a bubble you want to live your life in. Some people with celiac disease won't eat at restaurants or buy grocery items with multiple ingredients or even refuse to use BBQ grills, use teflon pans that have had gluten in them or even use BBQ grills that are not their own. Personally, I can't and won't live that way. I like restaurants...
