  1. Anyone have any trouble with Miracle Whip? I'm wondering if there is cross-contamination issues with the mustard flour?
  2. I know some folks on here advocate for having separate plastic utensils, bowls, and storage containers so I may get a lot of push-back for what I'm about to say... but as long as you clean it well, it's fine. My uncle is Celiac and has been gluten-free for over 15 years. My aunt eats normal. They keep a shared kitchen and share all of the plastic stuff...
  3. Thanks Kareng - I'll keep those in mind. I haven't experimented with hardly any gluten-free processed food yet - actually just bought a few rolls for the first time today.
  4. I'm not much for junk food either, but once in awhile you just need something unhealthy I miss ice-cream sandwiches... but luckily Eddy's Fudge Tracks are safe!
  5. Regarding your cross-contamination question... It is possible that you are getting cross-contaminated in a shared kitchen if you aren't carefull. However, I wouldn't fret too much about Ramen being poured in a pan. As long as it isn't porous, like caste-iron. Pans clean thoroughly and don't hang onto gluten - so as long as you're cleaning them well you...
  6. It's not uncommon for Celiacs to have a hard time tolerating dairy at first. You may want to avoid dairy - or stick to "mild" dairy like cottage cheese and yogurt and avoid the harder-to-digest stuff like aged, hard cheese and full-out whole milk. Over time, many seem to find that even if they weren't able to tolerate dairy before, after being gluten-free...
  7. Based on my own experience, I would say yes. I had no symptoms prior to my diagnosis. I only requested the blood tests because it runs in my family. After being gluten-free for about 3 months I got glutened by a tiny bit of tabuli and had a fairly severe reaction. No bad intestinal issues, but chills and cold sweats, bloating, extreme fatigue, and irritability...
  8. I was glutened once when I took a little tiny taste of tabuli that I got mixed up with another salad. The tabuli had bulgar wheat in it - and I couldn't have eaten more than about 6 or so tiny pieces of it. A few hours later I went to bed and shortly afterwards was woken up with chills and cold sweats - like what you get when you come down with the flu...
  9. Hi and Welcome! I don't know if you have Celiac or not but if you're going to try going gluten-free I would suggest laying off the processed stuff for awhile. It can be really hard to digest and if you do in fact have Celiac your body can't heal and deal with that stuff too. Stick to whole, natural food. Meat, veggies, fruits. Also, you may have other...
  10. Wow... no biopsies. I really hate doctors sometimes. They're right up there with used-car salesmen and ambulance-chasing lawyers... Anyhow... it's completely your choice if you decide to go gluten-free without waiting for a diagnosis. With severe symptoms, I don't blame you one bit. Just a word of caution... you have to go 100% gluten-free. No cheating...
  11. This may sound harsh... but it sounds like the best you could hope for is that he developes really bad symptoms very soon. Maybe if he had bad symptoms and felt really crappy he'd admit to himself that he needs to be gluten-free. Going for years asymptomatic would be worse, IMO.
  12. Hersey's miniatures are on the NON-gluten-free list: Open Original Shared Link (although I haven't checked the packages - I'm not really a junk-food person) Also, regular Rolos are gluten-free but the mini's have wheat in them. (Edited to add... Hersey's actually doesn't include Rolos on their gluten-free list either even though there are no gluten...
  13. I've only been gluten-free about 5 months now and have only been glutened once - so I have limited experience to share. The one time I got glutened I got cold sweats and couldn't get warm - this started a few hours after having eaten the gluten cooties - so about 10pm. Then by the next morning I was exceptionally exhausted. Like the feeling you get after...
  14. I haven't touched oats since my diagnosis so I can't say for sure whether I could tolerate them. But both my uncle and my mother have Celiac and neither of them can tolerate oats - even the certified gluten-free ones. They both react the same to them as they would to wheat or anything else with gluten in it. (Which is why I haven't gone near them.)
  15. I'm not usually one to drink soda, but I have had Canada Dry Ginger Ale once since being diagnosed and not only did I not have any issues with it I was actually drinking it to calm my stomach after my one accidental glutening. It worked. FWIW.. whenever I come across contradictory information like that I contact the company directly. They can usually set...
  16. For the same reason they feel the need to put high-fructose-corn-syrup in a can of pineapple. Either we've all gotten so used to eating stuff that is so over-sweetened that we can't taste anything anymore - or the quality of our soil and of our food has gotten so poor that it tastes like crap without a ton of sugar on it. <getting down off the soapbox...
  17. I really like the Luna protein bars. Their regular bars are kinda nasty and taste like sawdust... I also don't remember if they were gluten-free, I haven't eaten them in so long. But the protein bars are actually really good (I was eating them way before I knew I had Celiac). I'm looking at a Peanut Butter one and it's 12g protein, 190 calories (80 from...
  18. Hi BlueDotty and Welcome to the Forum! There are lots of NCGI folks here and many self-diagnosed folks who consider themselves to be either Celiac or NCGI but aren't really concerned about proving which one because for them, it really doesn't matter - the outcome is the same.... 100% gluten-free for life. So welcome! You've come to the right place and...
  19. love it! Now go get 'em... gangster style... Open Original Shared Link
  20. Hi Sarahdea and Welcome! Just wondering if it's possible that you have a dairy issue and not a gluten issue?
  21. I'd have to say I've been more annoyed than surprised. Just want to reiterate the Celiac mantra... every label, every time. If I'm unsure about any ingredient I Google it from my phone before I even buy it. I was actually most surprised that maltodextrin does NOT contain gluten.
  22. Just throwing this out there... any chance it's a bug?
  23. Because I contacted the company - forget now which brand it was.
  24. Just making sure future readers get the full picture. Smoke flavor can in fact contain barley flour as the OP suggested. And in the US, barley does not have to be declared.
  25. I think if your symptoms aren't gone by today you should make sure your doctor is aware of what's going on - just to be safe. Also, keep an eye out for any blood in your stool.
