  1. Over the past 3 decades, I've gone from 6' 3" to 6' 1" today. Can't blame it on having kids though. My daughter's mom took care of that.
  2. I can really identify with this and I am sure a lot of other celiacs can as well. It just does not make sense that medical treatment should only consist of pills, drugs and surgery. The conviction that there is no medical treatment once a celiac goes gluten-free implies this. It posits that, since there are no pills, drugs or surgical procedures for...
  3. Have you given any thought to gluten sources other than food? Not to be indelicate but could the gluten be coming from gluten-containing suppositories or perhaps hemorrhoid medication? Gluten can enter both ends of the digestive system. Does your job or occupation bring you in contact with gluten? For example, do you strip wallpaper? For me...
  4. This is good advice and a good way to discover whatever is bothering you. In addition to food allergies, perhaps it is worth considering other possibilities as well. One thing for me that results in similar symptoms is sugar in my gut. As a result, I've learned to keep away from sugars and sweets. If I buy pastries or cookies and eat them over a couple...
  5. Your comment struck a chord with me. A while back, my director tried to rope me into a vendor-sponsored business meal at the last minute. It was one of those gratuitous vendor meals that vendors host just as much for themselves as for the client. The menu was fixed by the host, we had no control over it and there was no time to arrange any special accomodation...
  6. I've sworn off soda. My gut does not handle sugars very well. I'd rather drink water and have a happy gut. Boring and unappealing, I know.
  7. A hearty Amen to that! When I was going to school, I worked in an environment like that. As a result, I was familiar with what happens behind-the-scenes. In the establishment where I worked, we had dedicated friers. The BIG catch was that the oil has to be periodically cleaned (strained to remove bits of food that fell off during cooking). We did this...
  8. Have you read the info on the MacDonald's site at: Open Original Shared Link If you click the link for "Nutrition", the following will display along with other info: Ingredients: Potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor [wheat and milk derivatives]*, citric acid [preservative]), dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate...
  9. I would suggest the same thing. Use gluten-free pasta for everyone.
  10. Something unexpected happened while I was at my local Acme picking up some groceries. I have an Acme customer card which allows the store to track my purchases. One thing they do with that info is selectively print coupons for me at checkout. The system prints coupons for products that may be of interest to me. Today, one coupon was printed. It...
  11. If temperature is an issue, have you tried placing a folded blanket between the bed sheets at the foot of the bed and sleeping with your feet inserted into the folded blanket? Probably not much use now but maybe worth a try next winter.
  12. I might try the bag of garden soil option in my back porch which is all glass (like a greenhouse). That would leave the back yard dedicated to the birds and would protect my food from not only the birds but the deer, rabbits, groundhogs, etc. Have to decide now what to grow. Guess it needs to be fairly compact. What is the usual approach? Multiple...
  13. My development was built on bed rock. It's a good, solid foundation for the house but the yard leaves a bit to be desired. The developer trucked in dirt and put down 3 to 5 inches of fill dirt. Every year when I turn the soil, I take out a couple hundred pounds of rocks. The back yard is relatively small. I dug up all of it and turned it into a Backyard...
  14. Sometimes I think that is what is missing from Celiac Disease. If we immediately fell out of our chairs to the floor and had an epileptic seizure or went into a diabetic coma, people would probably take this a lot more seriously. As it is, I doubt your cousin will be repentant when you tell her you got sick. Unless she sees you on a gurney, she probably...
  15. The reaction was very specific and clear-cut. It never varied. Once I realized this was food related, it was easy to associate cause and effect. All that was required was the time and patience to systematically identify and eliminate offending foods and then wait to see if anything else caused the same precise problem. The process was identical to what...
  16. About 4 yrs ago now, I suddenly developed a long list of allergies similar to yours: corn, potatoes, yams, nuts, dairy, eggs, soy, legumes, cinnamon, olives and chicken. When any of these was consumed, a mass of tissue under my right jaw would swell and there would be difficulty swallowing. As you said, all that remained was basically rice, fish, pork,...
  17. I experienced the same problem from time to time. It's been a mystery I've never quite figured out. The best I could do was associate it with which brand chicken I was buying. The strongest association seemed to be with generic chicken sold by the grocery store where I shop. That chicken would be in clear shrink-wrap with a price tag, nothing more. The...
  18. Any GP recommendations for Wilmington, Delaware?
  19. has not set their status

  20. If the little curvy thing is your ear lobe, could it be that you have pierced ears and one of them is infected? Admittedly, the only experience I have is my daughters but I think I remember their mom trying to dissuade them from piercing their ears by using the specter of infection among other things.
  21. This is an excellent point and very important for people to understand. It is a systemic problem that goes well beyond just doctors. Fee-for-service insurance systems do not handle gray areas very well. They work best when every ailment/problem is yes/no, on/off, clear-cut. That way, a doctor can assign a particular diagnosis code and get reimbursed...
  22. That makes two of us. There are two main categories that have resulted in an occasional gluten reaction for me: 1) Products labeled both as "gluten-free" as well as "made in a non-dedicated facility". I simply stay away from these now. Most products are "probably" safe but I've been burned enough that I feel safer simply saying, No. 2) A very...
  23. The biggest advantage of the Wild Harvest products is that they are organic. I checked the Classico web site and they list two sauces with organic ingredients: Organic Spinach and Garlic Organic Tomato, Herbs and Spices Next time I'm at the grocery, I think I will look for them. Although I prepare almost all my food from scratch now, it is handy...
  24. I've experienced that when I would eat too much salt or when I would let work get to me and my blood pressure would spike (similar to what you mentioned in your post). In my case at least, gluten probably wasn't a factor. However, if you are on a gluten-free diet, your celiac-related symptoms/problems should subside. That should reduce stress levels...
