  1. This seems like another good reason to eat whole foods - but I never would have guessed that plain yogurt, with cultured milk as the only ingredient, might not be "whole."
  2. Here is an older thread on the subject: I'm having trouble finding FDA labeling requirements. It is considered GRAS (generally recognized as safe). The GRAS document I looked at gives examples of use in yogurt, tofu, and various baked goods. It might be considered a type of processing aid in which case it might not be required to be on the label...
  3. Here is some information about labeling (or lack of) in other countries. Open Original Shared Link
  4. If used in "formed meat" in the US it is supposed to be listed as an ingredient. Here is information from the USDA. I will see if I can find something from the FDA about its use in other foods. Open Original Shared Link
  5. Yeah! Make sure he eats plenty of gluten between now and then - perhaps his favorite breads, cakes etc in case he has to give them up afterwards.
  6. On the findmeglutenfree website, after you enter a city and get results you can check a box in the column on the left (at least that is how it looks on my iPad) and limit the list to dedicated gluten free facilities.
  7. Some people with celiac have trouble with the lactose in dairy products until their intestines have healed.
  8. Kareng is correct. I am a scientist and used to develop similar tests. If you ran a sample of water you probably would not get a zero!
  9. I'm not sure you need to avoid dairy. Some celiacs avoid it at first because their villi are so damaged that they don't make the enzyme that digests lactose and they have intestinal troubles due to the subsequent lactose intolerance. If it doesn't cause digestive troubles for you, why avoid it? I never cut it out.
  10. Refined grains are fortified because valuable nutrients are removed during the refining process (for example when making white flour out of whole wheat). They do not remove nutrients from our bodies.
  11. Hi Cara, Since I no longer get the horrendous headaches that can go with migraines, I just try to keep functioning. If I get an aura it lasts about 30 minutes but most of that time I can still see pretty well. If I get the loss of vision that only lasts about 5 minutes. In fact, I find they are less bothersome and I feel less "blah" if I keep working...
  12. I get about 6-12 migraines a year and 1 or 2 are the loss of vision type. I've had migraines for decades but that type started about 12 years ago. I'm lucky, I don't get much of a headache anymore, just the visual stuff and feeling blah for a few days. I get either the typical flashing light type of aura or the loss of vision where it seems like a windowshade...
  13. Hi Cara123. I just wanted to say that I also get the type of migraines where I lose vision in one eye for a few minutes. Very scary the first time - I'm used to it now. I hope you get some answers soon.
  14. Dextrin is made by breaking down starch. If the starch came from wheat, there could be contamination with wheat protein (gluten). But I think in the US if dextrin is from wheat it is supposed to say so.
  15. Sometimes lactose intolerance goes along with Celiac until healing of the villi occurs, you may want to try eliminating dairy for a while.
  16. I started by reading ingredients on labels and avoiding known gluten sources. My antibodies came down but were still high. Then I went to only buying prepared foods that were labeled gluten free. Antibodies further down, one still high. I mainly eat whole foods now, and only buy certified gluten free prepared foods, rice and nuts - hoping that will put...
  17. My GI said that her endoscope has enough magnification to see the villi, she saw visually that mine were blunted and the pathology report agreed. I think she said she had to flush some water across the villi to get a good look at them, maybe to see how they moved? and that not all GIs went to the trouble to do that.

Those Doritos don't have gluten ingredients but could be contaminated and are not tested for gluten - so you take your chances eating them. If the reaction was to gluten and not just to junk food it would set healing back some but not all the way to square one.

  20. About 95% of my diet fits that, with a little certified gluten free (not junk food). If my antibodies aren't normal next year I'll go for 100%. Although I don't have symptoms, I did just feel better eating mostly that way. I was surprised that my dietician, who specializes in GI issues, had not heard of it.
  21. Do you mean total IgA? Or Ttg or Dgp IgA?
  22. I can't help, but I can sympathize. I hope you get some advice! I've been trying to be gluten free for four years. My antibody levels have come way down but my DGP IgA is still high and my TTg IgA is still borderline positive. Each time I try a stricter diet they come down a little more. I'm now eating mainly whole foods plus some certified gluten free...
  23. It might have gone down, you can't tell because the first result was >100. It might have been 200 or 300 and now 101. I'd give it more time. Do you feel better?
  24. In a correctly functioning immune system antibodies bind to molecules that shouldn't be in the body and help to remove them - for example, bacteria and viruses. In allergies and autoimmune conditions the immune system overreacts. In an allergy, the IgE type of antibody binds with the allergen, for example a protein in wheat (most allergies are to proteins...
