Nutritional defiencies?
RMJ replied to Jlewisrn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had slightly low vitamin D, but did not have anemia or other nutritional deficiencies prior to diagnosis. -
Two other completely gluten free cafes in The San Diego area (The Curious Fork doesn't make a big deal abut being gluten free on their website) https://www.healthycreations.com/ https://www.thecuriousfork.com/pages/cafe

newly diagnosed and looking for help
RMJ replied to gabsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Frito-Lay does not test this type of Doritos to see if it is gluten free. They don't have gluten-containing ingredients, but could be contaminated. http://www.fritolay.com/nutrition/special-dietary-needs/us-gluten-free-products-and-products-not-containing-gluten-ingredients.htm -
Almost 11yr old son, celiac maybe?
RMJ replied to monicameme's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm glad you have a definitive answer! -
I felt pretty awkward the first time I decided to go out with coworkers and not eat anything. It turned out fine and is much easier the second time!

I would try to get genetic testing for your husband. If his genetics say he shouldn't have it, you'd know that your family can have celiac without the usual genes.

Different types of Soy ingredients
RMJ replied to Scarlettsdad's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
True allergies are usually to proteins. Lecithin would have a lot less protein than soy flour. Does your daughter have a diagnosed soy allergy? -
Positive Blood Tests

I hope you get clearcut results. -
Positive gliadin is now normal
RMJ replied to Runningmomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I used to work in the diagnostics industry. It is highly likely that it is the marketing department, not the white coat wearers, who like the combined testing, allowing their product to be different from the competition. -
Positive gliadin is now normal
RMJ replied to Runningmomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Were they exactly the same tests? Could the older one be gliadin and the newer one deamidated gliadin peptides? -
Positive Blood Tests
RMJ replied to jenna3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That value/score is a very, very strange way of reporting total IgA! -
Positive Blood Tests
RMJ replied to jenna3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not sure what you mean by score, but her testing at the Mayo Clinic looks like what they describe in the Mayo Clinic link I included. The posted results are in reverse order of the actual testing. Testing started with total IgA (for some strange reason labeled "Celiac disease, cascade" and does not include units). It was within the normal range... -
Positive Blood Tests
RMJ replied to jenna3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Cascade or reflex testing is where they don't do all the tests at once, but based on initial results the testing may be continued. It happens in the lab, it is not a case of going back to the doctor for the decision to continue. For example, when I am tested the lab only does the EMA if the Ttg is positive. The test labeled cascade looks like it... -
I had high antibodies, no symptoms, and a positive biopsy. I am glad you are getting a second opinion. I'm glad celiac can be treated (gluten free diet) without a doctor's prescription, since so many doctors do a poor job diagnosing it.

Travelling to the least gluten-free friendly place - advice pls!
RMJ replied to JesLin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was in the hospital once for six days and had nothing except the glucose in the iv solution- and I survived. Since it is only for two weeks I wouldn't worry about a balanced diet, or getting every nutrient every day. Some celiacs react to oats, but lots of steamed rice would be good for getting calories. If you took nuts that would add both fat and... -
It seems strange to be tested for celiac or gluten sensitivity if you have no symptoms, unless you have a close relative with celiac. It will be interesting to see what sort of test was actually performed.

I started by reading ingredients on labels and avoiding known gluten sources. My antibodies came down but were still high. Then I went to only buying prepared foods that were labeled gluten free. Antibodies further down, one still high. I mainly eat whole foods now, and only buy certified gluten free prepared foods, rice and nuts - hoping that will put...

I would be very unhappy if I had a strictly gluten free household and someone brought gluten into it. My household is not completely gluten free (my husband prepares foods with gluten in a separate area) but I'd still be unhappy if guests expected to eat gluten in my house. It's your health, not just a preference.

Thank you for that information! I'm super sensitive and trying to use whole foods plus a few certified gluten free items. This really helps. -
Ghirardelli Chocolate Chips
RMJ replied to WinterSong's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I eat their chips but not their cocoa. I used to, but then the cocoa label changed to say that it may contain wheat (or is made in a facility with wheat, I forget which). When I asked them about it they said they had changed where the cocoa was manufactured. But since the chips don't say that I feel safe with them. Always good to read the label every... -
Ghirardelli Chocolate Chips
RMJ replied to WinterSong's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They seem to be good about saying things may contain wheat when their products are made on shared equipment, for example their ground chocolate which I no longer use. This is the reply I got a year ago (March 2015) when asking about their 60% cacao chips. "Dear Consumer, There is no wheat in our 60% chips and no wheat in our chips facility... -

Lindt Lindor Chocolate And Barley Malt Ugh!
RMJ replied to daisymae106's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My boss gave me a bag of Lindt truffles today. Thanks to this topic I immediately checked the ingredients and saw barley malt. My cubicle mate was happy to take them off my hands.
