Yes, that was the first fancy outfit I didn't feel like a freak in! Even though the others looked nice, this was comfortable and practical as well as fancy enough. I didn't hate wearing it, usually I hate fancy clothing. If only my husband would understand that I am exhausted, mentally and physically. I just couldn't bring myself to go to church today...

As promised, here is a picture of me in my wedding outfit as my avatar.

Yes, I agree that it is a possibility. She has chronic tonsillitis, frequent ear infections and is always cold. But she refuses to try the gluten-free diet. She would do the blood tests, but would have to pay for it herself, as our government thinks celiac disease testing is unnecessary. I don't think she wants to spend the money, especially because I don...

Well, the rehearsal is over, dinner and all. I had a lot of fun watching the babies while the mothers helped getting things ready for tomorrow (making flower arrangements, practicing their music etc.). Zoey, Karen's baby, is 13 months old, and Hanna, Sarah's baby, is 10 months old. For the most part, I was completely in charge of Zoey (the sweetest little...

ARCHIVED Food Diary
Ursa Major replied to Kottemamman's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You call that a SMALL gluten provocation? No wonder you are having problems! Even people who don't have celiac disease will have a problem with that much gluten (which really isn't good for anybody), never mind somebody suspecting celiac disease! Are you going through testing right now, or are you planning on just trying the gluten-free diet? I hope... -
ARCHIVED Organic Food Bar
Ursa Major replied to cooki.dough's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, I am afraid you already know the answer. Obviously, the makers of that bar believe that the juice from those plants is fine and never contaminated by the grain itself..... Too many people think that, but I wouldn't trust those bars, either. So, yes, you have to always read the ingredients of everything, even if it says gluten-free, if you want to... -
Boy, this is going from bad to worse, what is wrong with my kids? My second oldest daughter (she'll be 26 on Sunday, the day after the wedding) called me today. She had offered to bake a gluten-free pie, so the kids and I could have dessert after the rehearsal that is like everybody else's. She told me she baked an apple pie with crumb crust. I told...

ARCHIVED Eat Gluten Before Tests?
Ursa Major replied to confusedks's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You need to be eating the equivalent of about four slices of bread for several months before a biopsy to have any hope of it being accurate. So, while it is possible that your biopsy will be positive, it may also come back false negative, due to you not eating a lot of gluten. Why don't you just try the diet and see how you feel? Kassandra, you... -
Yes, the blood tests are not terribly reliable, and the biopsy can miss the damaged spots. It is entirely possible to have negative tests and still have celiac disease. Those tests can only rule celiac disease in, but can't rule it out. My suggestion would be for her to try the gluten-free diet, especially because her sister has celiac disease. If she...

ARCHIVED Shampoo
Ursa Major replied to Worriedwife's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use Dove shampoo and conditioner, and the combination one when travelling, and I am happy with it. -
ARCHIVED Flour Question

Yes, I believe they are the same. -
ARCHIVED Getting Pregnant But Not On The Diet
Ursa Major replied to KatieB's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My naturopathic doctor told me that being overweight can be a sign of malnutrition! I had eight miscarriages and five very difficult pregnancies. I am very blessed to have five healthy children. I am convinced that the miscarriages were due to undiagnosed celiac disease. Please, for your sake and any children's sake you may have, get serious about... -
ARCHIVED Shampoo? What?
Ursa Major replied to bakinghomesteader's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, really, if you think about it, you always get some water into your mouth when rinsing (or at least regularly). Plus, there will be some residue in your hair. So, when you touch your hair (we all do) during the day and then eat something without washing your hands first, you will get glutened. The same goes for lotion, soap, chapstick, lipstick (if it... -
ARCHIVED 50 Reasons To Celebrate Being 50
Ursa Major replied to Kaycee's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
1. It's allowed to be old-fashioned 2. You're admired for NOT having gray hair (and I don't dye it) 3. You are able to give good advice, because you already made all the mistakes (most, anyway ) 4. You might have grandchildren! who you don't have to raise and can hand back when they are bad 5. You have the time to pursue some hobbies... -
Sheryll, he sounds like a better doctor than most for sure. But there is little point in looking for celiac disease with a biopsy, because after six months gluten-free it is almost a certainty that it will come back negative. But it is still a good idea to rule out other problems. Obviously gluten is a problem, and I am glad you have no intentions of going...

Hi Barb, I don't know about platelets, but anemia is one of the very common symptoms of celiac disease. Many people with celiac disease also are diabetic. Can't you get your sister to maybe try the gluten-free diet? It is a healthy diet, and she might just start feeling better.

ARCHIVED Kissing Question
Ursa Major replied to whattodo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That is a very valid concern, and we've had these discussions before. You definitely should not kiss your partner right after she eats or drinks anything containing gluten. And yes, she should always brush her teeth before kissing you, because otherwise the chances of you getting glutened are high. -
ARCHIVED Biting Inside Of My Cheeks
Ursa Major replied to mamaloca2's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I have Tourette's syndrome and Asperger Syndrome, and I have always done that, too. It isn't possible to determine if in my case it is a tic, OCD (which I have mildly, but not enough for a separate diagnosis, as EVERYBODY with TS and AS has some compulsive behaviours) or a stim (self-stimulating behaviour, typical for people on the autistic spectrum). But... -
ARCHIVED Does Being A Parent Not Mean Anything To Some?
Ursa Major replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Amanda, I am glad your sister has a great family to support her. The sooner she gets out of this creep's house, the better! I hope it works out with the nice guy, I bet he would make a great husband and father. -
ARCHIVED Apple Cider Vingegar
Ursa Major replied to mama2two's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Apple cider vinegar is definitely gluten-free. Your husband may have a reaction to it for some other reason. Maybe his bowels can't handle it right now. I can't use it because it is high in salicylates, and I can't tolerate it for that reason. My husband drinks a tablespoonful in a glass of water every day, and it has helped a lot with his allergies, and... -
ARCHIVED What Does It Mean?
Ursa Major replied to Jeff and Lisa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Jeff, I agree with Carla. Try the diet and see if it makes a difference. You're obviously reacting to gluten, and even with biopsies taken from seven spots the damage could have been missed. -
ARCHIVED Going Backwards - My Story
Ursa Major replied to Derek Borckmann's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Derek, and welcome to this board. Have you eliminated dairy from your diet? That is an absolute must for at least the first six months of your gluten-free diet. The tips of the villi (which are non-existent right now) are supposed to produce the enzyme lactase to digest dairy. Most people who start the gluten-free diet won't get better until they also... -
ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Anemia Or B12 Deficiency?
Ursa Major replied to ami27's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ami, I hope your doctor is testing for vitamin B6, magnesium and vitamin D as well. Especially a lack of vitamin B6 can cause the tingling and numbness. I hope all the tests will show what the problem is, so it can be corrected. -
I am so sorry this is happening to you! And the RAI can't be undone. I just hope you feel better soon and that in the end it was worth it. I'll be praying for your quick recovery.

ARCHIVED Anyone Ever Get Hives From Gluten?
Ursa Major replied to chocolatelover's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I get hives from food, but not usually from gluten. What are Dibbs?
