Happy late birthday! Karen, I will either order a gift myself, asking my husband beforehand if I can have it for my birthday, or put the kids on him to tell him what I want (it doesn't always work, of course). Before I did that, there were years I didn't get anything. It was more upsetting than getting the wrong thing. My birthday is in three...

ARCHIVED What Is The Deal With Fibromyalgia?
Ursa Major replied to floridanative's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Chrissy, in October of 2005, when I first came here, somebody had posted a link on lectins. I read everything in that site, and realized that all lectin food had been causing problems for me, so I eliminated all of them two weeks after I cut out gluten. Then, when right around Christmas all my pain came back, Rachel just happened to be investigating if... -

ARCHIVED What Is The Deal With Fibromyalgia?
Ursa Major replied to floridanative's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
No, I never had viral titers. My doctor put me on an antibiotic a couple of times because of swollen lymph nodes, to fight 'whatever it was that was causing that'. It didn't really help (duh). It is possible to have FM from other intolerances that do not include gluten. Foods high in salicylates can pretty much cripple people as well, if they are... -
I've got the same problems as Patti. I'm intolerant to all legumes, including soy and peanuts.

ARCHIVED What Is The Deal With Fibromyalgia?
Ursa Major replied to floridanative's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Marcia, I had both fibro and CFS plus myofascial pain syndrome. I had chronically swollen, painful lymph nodes, too. My lymph nodes are normal now, unless I eat something wrong. I also had painful, swollen joints and horrible pains in the connective tissues and muscles. It was so bad that I was on codeine 24 hours a day, just to take the edge off. If I would... -
ARCHIVED What Is The Deal With Fibromyalgia?
Ursa Major replied to floridanative's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
As far as I am concerned, there is no more such a thing as fibromyalgia than IBS. Both are syndromes, and you get labeled with them when your doctor is clueless, and won't investigate any further. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia seven years ago, too. I had the symptoms from the age of three. But if you look at fibro symptoms you'll find that they almost... -
ARCHIVED Trouble Breathing?
Ursa Major replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had severe asthma as a child. Most of the time I am okay now. But if I get glutened, or eat rice, I will definitely be wheezing and can't catch my breath. Asthma has been associated with celiac disease. -
ARCHIVED Introducing Solid Foods To Baby - Cereal Issues?
Ursa Major replied to RiceFiend's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
RiceFiend, dark circles under eyes ALWAYS indicates allergies/intolerances, especially in children. Meaning, they are both consuming foods they are intolerant to. A baby as young as six months doesn't need any cereal at all. In fact, NOBODY needs any grain products, ever, to be healthy. They seem to cause a lot of problems in a lot of people. My suggestion... -
ARCHIVED Hay Fever Reaction When Glutened?
Ursa Major replied to holdthegluten's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep! -
Sheryll, I am sorry you got glutened. Wouldn't it be much easier to make your whole house gluten-free? Then the chances of you being glutened would diminish considerably, and you would feel much safer at home. And you never know which one(s) of your kids would suddenly realize that they had symptoms of gluten intolerance you never knew were symptoms....

ARCHIVED Hay Fever Reaction When Glutened?
Ursa Major replied to holdthegluten's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Steve, I would never have thought of it this way! But you're right, now that I think about it. Whenever I am glutened (or 'dairied' or other intolerances), my allergies go into overdrive. And antihistamines do work for those allergy symptoms for me as well. Thanks for mentioning that, you learn something new every day when reading posts! -
ARCHIVED Should Celiacs Do A Colon Cleanse?
Ursa Major replied to wdwmaggie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
In May of 2005 I tried a colon cleanse. After five days of it I got awfully sick with explosive watery diarrhea, horrendous bowel and stomach cramps, and pretty much went into shock on the toilet. I had chronic diarrhea for six months after that, which only stopped when finally I figured it out and eliminated gluten in October. I know that the colon cleanse... -

ARCHIVED Comparing 2 Sons' Results From Enterolab
Ursa Major replied to Pacer's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is true, positive is positive, no matter how high the positive is. Your sons both have the celiac disease gene and antibodies. Meaning, they both need to be on a gluten-free diet. I suggest you also have their levels of essential nutrients checked, as especially your older son may be suffering from malnutrition. My guess is that he is so skinny because... -

ARCHIVED Are These Vitamin Levels Normal?
Ursa Major replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Optimal 25-hydroxyvitamin D values are: 45-50 ng/ml or 115-128 nmol/l Normal 25-hydroxyvitamin D lab values are: 20-56 ng/ml 50-140 nmol/l Taken from mercola.com So, if your doctor says that 32-100ng/L is normal, then he is saying that toxic levels are normal. I guess I was thinking you meant nmol/l, which is what I was referring to. Still... -
ARCHIVED Are These Vitamin Levels Normal?
Ursa Major replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't know about the magnesium. But your vitamin D is too low, it should be at least 50 to 150, around 125 being optimal. The best way to get vitamin D is in cod liver oil. Try the Carlson brand, it doesn't taste bad (that is what I am taking). -
ARCHIVED Questions About Villi
Ursa Major replied to whattodo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Maybe your villi were 'only' inflamed and had some damage, but were not flattened yet? Be glad, you'll heal much faster, and other autoimmune diseases may not have been triggered. But if you continue to eat gluten, it is only a matter of time, and you'll have flattened villi and will get seriously ill. It is much better to prevent that. -
ARCHIVED Which Will Show Up First?
Ursa Major replied to sarahelizabeth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Generally, the intestinal damage will cause the antibodies to show up in the blood. But many here have had positive bloodwork and a negative biopsy (damage is easily missed), and there are others who've had negative bloodwork and a positive biopsy. The bloodwork is not terribly reliable. Which shows that neither one is very reliable, and trying the diet... -
ARCHIVED Gastritis?
Ursa Major replied to Jeppy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Jeppy, I used to have that same horrible ache right under my ribcage. My doctor said that it was caused by my stomach being very inflamed. My diarrhea was gone the day after going gluten-free, my backache started improving the second day, and my whole body aches started getting better within two weeks. But the terrible stomach ache took several weeks... -
ARCHIVED Positive Blood Work
Ursa Major replied to momof2sn's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Congratulations, that's wonderful news! Have you put her on supplements for her deficiencies? It takes too long to fix those without supplements. You can give yourself a pat on the back for doing the right thing for your daughter, you can't rely on doctors to be much help. -
Several things come to mind when you talk about muscle cramps, weakness and dizziness. The muscle cramps could be caused by a magnesium deficiency. The weakness could be an iron deficiency/anemia. You could also have adrenal fatigue. My suggestion is, to see your doctor and demand (nicely ) to be tested for nutritional deficiencies, since those are...

ARCHIVED Gastritis?
Ursa Major replied to Jeppy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Jeppy, and welcome to this board. Any doctor/scientist who has done their research acknowledges that they likely haven't found all the celiac disease genes yet. So, when they tell you that you don't have the genes and that therefore you can't have celiac disease don't know what they are talking about. A negative biopsy also doesn't prove you... -
