  1. Did you eliminate dairy from your diet when you went gluten-free? The tips of your villi will produce the enzyme lactase which allows you to digest dairy. If your villi are flattened, those tips are gone, hence you will have a lactose intolerance. Everybody diagnosed with celiac disease is advised to initially eliminate dairy from their diet in order...
  2. No, it would not be a violation for somebody else to post a link to your blog. What is not allowed is self-promotion. It doesn't matter if I agree or not, those are the rules we need to follow, as it's Scott's site and he has the right to enforce his rules.
  3. Well, I am not saying that it can't possibly be DH. But it looks an awful lot like typical psoriasis to me. Mind you, psoriasis can be caused by celiac disease as well, I am a good example for that.
  4. You don't need to have any diagnosis, official or not, to give your son appropriate care. You know that he is obviously gluten intolerant. An official diagnosis with a positive biopsy would just tell you that things have progressed to the point of completely destroyed villi. Whether his villi are gone or not, the ONLY appropriate care is the gluten-free...
  5. I think no. 5 is the one (and I chose it without looking at anybody else's comments because I didn't want to be influenced in my decision). I also like the lightning picture. But that ladybug picture is unique and artistic, I love it. There are other very nice pictures there. The flower ones are pretty. But too many people will have the same kind of pictures...
  6. I do agree with Carla that head tables (especially when elevated) aren't the greatest. I am glad that there is no such custom in Germany, because I would have felt awful being on display and having to kiss on demand and giving speeches and other strange customs they have here. On the other hand, I am glad that most weddings I have gone to had people...
  7. The problem with a gastric bypass is, that it causes huge problems down the road. Yes, you'll lose weight. But you also won't absorb a lot of nutrients. People who've had a gastric bypass are relying on large doses of vitamins to try to fulfill their body's need for essential nutrients, since it isn't possible for them to get those through food any more....
  8. My oldest granddaughter was her aunt's flower girl when she was four, and she felt very special when she sat at the head table (her family was seated nearby). Also, she now loves looking at the pictures, and finding herself in her special dress standing in front of the rest of the wedding party. If you seat the kids at the head table, you need to make...
  9. Mandy, I hope you realize that usually five weeks are not enough to destroy your villi again and to get a positive biopsy (four to six months is what most GIs will order, and even that is usually not enough). So, please, even if the biopsy is negative (which is likely), get back on the diet as soon as the biopsy is done. Because you are OBVIOUSLY gluten intolerant...
  10. Nate, right now I am feeling awfully angry! How is it possible for doctors to be so ignorant. If you were diagnosed with celiac disease at age five then YOU HAVE CELIAC DISEASE. You don't outgrow it, ever. Blood tests often yield false negatives, they are not very reliable. You have blunted villi because you have celiac disease, that's it, no question...
  11. Yes, unfortunately, you really, really need to wash your hands after touching gluten foods before you help your son eat the gluten-free foods. And regular play dough is absolutely forbidden for kids who are gluten intolerant. Think about it, it will be under his finger nails, kids eat with their hands, you really can't constantly manage to get him to wash...
  12. Well, it's three days ago, I think you got lucky this time. Good thing you managed to get the barley out before cooking the lentils first, you'd have been glutened for sure then. But in a way I am glad this happened to you, because I think it helps a lot of people, including me, to realize that barley can be in lentils. It would never have occurred to...
  13. Curiously, I got red hammer, and NOBODY has ever accused me of being normal before!
  14. Are you eating a lot of gluten-free junk food? Most gluten-free replacement foods are much higher in simple carbs and sugars than the gluteny foods being replaced. Also, do you get enough vitamins C, E and D? Those are important for regulating blood pressure, as are omega 3 fatty acids. Eat apples, they are known to lower blood pressure (even smelling...
  15. Toddler diarrhea is NOT a valid diagnosis. It is never normal to have diarrhea more often than about three times a year for a day or so. I had watery diarrhea for six months in 2005, and much of that time I was too weak to get out of bed. So, I know how your little girl feels. Poor little one. You have an ignorant doctor, I heard a lot of bad things...
  16. That's great Trish! My Zehr's started up a whole gluten-free section when reorganizing a few months ago. But because I really can't eat any of those I make myself sick eating them sometimes, it's just too tempting. You know Stephanie, I don't think they put those things together by mistake. My Sobee's store has all the Bob's Red Mill together too...
  17. One thing I want to mention is this: I choose to have a real medic alert bracelet, even though it is expensive, because it is a lot better than just a generic tag. With medic alert, they have your information on file to be accessed day or night (a 1-800 number to call is on my tag). They have a long, detailed list of all my allergies/intolerances, and what...
  18. Maybe your boyfriend is intolerant to rice? There is no way a gluten-free diet can hurt anybody normally, unless they are intolerant to something in those gluten-free foods, as I am.
  19. Paula, there are some doctors who will diagnose a gluten intolerance on the kind of evidence you have, without positive tests. My doctor did, I have heard of others here who's doctors did the same thing. I hope your doctor is one of those reasonable ones, for your son's sake. If not, please just go with Enterolab. Your son will have the evidence to look...
  20. I needed a new medic alert bracelet anyway (I used to wear one, but hated the stainless steel one and stopped wearing it a few years ago). I got a nice looking sterling silver one that states I have asthma and celiac disease, and I am allergic to morphine, Theo-Dur (an asthma medication) and Aspirin (so high in salicylates that if I had a heart attack they...
  21. I've always, all my life had awful, terrible nightmares. I remember a time a few years ago when for weeks I'd have up to ten a night, and would be afraid to go to bed. Now I only get those when eating lectins (of which gluten is one). I know I have been glutened when I have nightmares. It is like a miracle how well I sleep now, and how pleasant my dreams...
  22. The casein content of goats milk is much lower than in cow's milk. I can't have any cow's milk, but can use a little goat's milk on my buckwheat cereal without a problem. It has been found that when using cow's milk as a substitute for orphaned animal babies, the animals often die, while they do fine on goat's or sheep's milk, as they are much less likely...
  23. I take the hypoallergenic Super Nu-Thera mulitvitamin from Open Original Shared Link. You can order a sample size first, to see if you can tolerate it. It works for me without causing any problems.
  24. I was taking a multivitamin after I could actually absorb it (after about six months on the gluten-free diet) which has some vitamin D, and calcium/magnesium with vitamin D as well. I still take those, too. But I was not taking specifically vitamin D supplements.
  25. Congratulations on feeling so much better physically and mentally. You and your nieces look so happy in the picture, I love it. They sure are cute, no doubt about that.
