Anemia, osteoporosis, bloating and gas are some of the 'classic' celiac disease symptoms. The hot flashes fit too. Of course your biopsy was negative, after six months off gluten, it was entirely meaningless. You have the gene, you have the symptoms, and you feel better off gluten. Ignore your stupid doctor, who apparently is entirely ignorant when it comes...

ARCHIVED My Gi Doctor Said My Ulcerative Colitis Is Not At All Related To Gluten
Ursa Major replied to bumblebby's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your doctor obviously doesn't know what he is talking about (the majority don't it seems), ignore him. You know that the gluten-free diet is working, good for you for figuring it out, stick with it! I am glad you're better. -
ARCHIVED Filipino Celiac
Ursa Major replied to jhun's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Jhun, and welcome to this board. My take on your puzzlement is this: I don't think people in the Philippines traditionally eat wheat, rye or barley. It is possible that the majority can't tolerate it, but if they never eat it, then they never get active celiac disease. Once you start adopting a diet foreign to your heritage, you may suddenly get sick... -
ARCHIVED Nearly Convinced My Son Hasn't Got Celiac!
Ursa Major replied to Peta's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The blood tests are not as reliable as the doctors make you believe they are. And neither are biopsies. With his genes, and the symptoms he is experiencing, you can be pretty sure it is celiac disease, even if all the tests are negative. You should definitely give the diet a try, no matter what all the tests say. The blood tests will only be positive... -
ARCHIVED I Want To Send Dr. Fine Some Flowers
Ursa Major replied to AliceW's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wow, how incredibly happy you must be to finally be well, after all these years. I think you are right about wanting to at least let Dr. Fine know about your success, everybody can use a boost and a thank-you at times. -

ARCHIVED Can We Talk About Bandaids?
Ursa Major replied to olalisa's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Can you hold in in place with an elastic bandage? That way you won't have to stick anything onto her skin. -
ARCHIVED Can We Talk About Bandaids?
Ursa Major replied to olalisa's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I think it is the glue, whatever it is made of. I am severely allergic to all but the sensitive skin bandaids (and that goes for every brand I've ever tried, whether it's a fabric or a plastic bandaid). They don't stick as well, because they must use a different glue. But at least I don't get that awful rash within five to ten minutes, that might last... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Points Of Interest For Gps Navigation
Ursa Major replied to pickles's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Well, in Germany you'll find gluten-free foods mainly in health food stores called 'Reformhaus'. If you go to Google.de you'll be able to find Restaurants in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Here is a link to a gluten-free guide to Paris. Open Original Shared Link That's all the info I've got, but you can just google the different countries you go to... -
ARCHIVED Starving All The Time
Ursa Major replied to emcmaster's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Right, I forgot about them. One of my friends was one of those Japanese Canadians, who died of leukemia six years ago at the age of 68. Thanks Mango, for that link. It has amazing information. Here is an excerpt from the page "The oiling of America". Here is an excerpt from "The skinny on fat". Very enlightening. I've really just started... -
Rusla, I am sorry your lost your doctor. I know it will be tough finding another one who actually understands. Don't give up, and I hope you'll find another great doctor soon.

ARCHIVED Starving All The Time
Ursa Major replied to emcmaster's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I will find you proof when I have time. I am very tired after babysitting three small children today. The Inuit have long stopped eating their native diet. In fact, they stopped as soon as they started eating things the white men brought them. They are very fond of black tea with a ton of sugar in it (I've read as much as ten teaspoonfuls a cup). Hardly... -
ARCHIVED Stickers And Bandages
Ursa Major replied to mom-to-claire's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
With me, having any brand of bandaid on (other than the ones for sensitive skin) for more than ten minutes will result in a horrible rash that lasts weeks at the very least. When I have my blood taken, I always have to bring my own bandaid with me, as the doctor's offices NEVER have anything but the cheap plastic bandaids, which are the worst of them all... -
Lisa, I am sorry you're in so much pain, and that the doctor at the hospital is a non-caring jerk. The same sort of thing happened to me a year and a half ago. I went to the hospital, thinking I was having a heart attack. I was in excruciating pain. After five hours, the doctor told me that my heart was fine, that it was 'only' severe stomach and bowel cramps...

ARCHIVED Stickers And Bandages
Ursa Major replied to mom-to-claire's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know that the stickers you lick might have gluten in them, but I don't know about the self-sticking ones. I don't know if bandaids have gluten. But I know that I am very intolerant to them. I can only use bandaids for sensitive skin (other than my fingers, the skin is thicker there), otherwise I get a horribly itchy rash (in the shape of the bandaid... -

Hathor, you are making the same mistake most people, even doctors, make. You think that the same diet will work for everybody. That is not the case. Some people, like you, need very little protein and more carbs to be healthy, and too much fat and protein makes you sick. I am the exact opposite. I can't tolerate starches at all, they make me instantly gain... -
ARCHIVED Very Very Concerned Parent (long)
Ursa Major replied to nogluten77's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Fiddle-Faddle forgot that I changed my user name. But yes, I used to have terrible joint and muscle aches and back pain from the age of three, as well as being skinny as a stick, having no energy and being a generally unhappy child. I finally figured out I am intolerant not only to gluten, but all lectins and even medium levels of salicylates (follow the... -
ARCHIVED Wine Barrel Contamination?
Ursa Major replied to faegan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know anything about wine making, and never drink any wine (or other alcohol), because I simply hate the taste, and can't tolerate alcohol. But it seems to me that it should matter that they coat the crozes (whatever those exactly are) with wheat flour, if it comes into direct contact with the wine. -
Wow, sounds like you can do some pretty fancy tricks! It's pretty amazing what can be done with skateboards. My two youngest daughters went snowboarding last week Saturday. The most impressive 'tricks' Susie, my 15-year-old did, was slamming into a huge ball of ice and severely bruising her ribs, and doing some pretty fancy (unintentional) somersaults...

ARCHIVED Would You Eat These Probiotics?
Ursa Major replied to Yenni's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You're not being troublesome. I cannot tolerate legumes, either, and I am fine with those pills. But if in doubt, why don't you call them? There isn't a number to call on the container, so you would have to find it on the Internet (or see if they have an e-mail address). -

ARCHIVED Help Please
Ursa Major replied to Johnny123's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Betsy, I don't quite agree on the OCD. I often have to blink my eyes (and I mean a lot). I KNOW I am doing it, but I can't stop. There are other tics I can suppress (even though they'll come out eventually if I do), but I have never been able to suppress the eye blinking and clearing my throat. If somebody feels he HAS to count to a certain number in... -

ARCHIVED Cross Contamination?
Ursa Major replied to #1mommy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I personally wouldn't worry about it. Because if you do, you'll end up being so paranoid that you won't be able to eat anything without getting all stressed out. Which will be worse for your health than eating the foods that have a very, very small chance of contamination. Besides, I really don't believe that they can use the same equipment for harvesting...
