Latest Celiac Disease News & Research:
Everything posted by icelandgirl

I've read all of the books mentioned above along with Real Life with Celiac Disease by Melinda Dennis. When I was diagnosed I went a little crazy trying to get as much info as possible. I think for really good, accurate facts the Fasano book is really good and well written. The Green book is good as well although I think it was a bit more scientific. ...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Ebola - South Park Episode
icelandgirl replied to moosemalibu's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I watched it last night and it was funny! Not as funny as the Cesar Milan episode...that one is beyond funny...but I laughed quite a bit. -
ARCHIVED Would You Avoid Processed Gluten-Free Food?
icelandgirl replied to radley's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It seems like initially a lot of celiacs do best eating whole foods only. The good thing about that is that there is no long list of ingredients to read...A banana is a banana, etc. It's not as convenient as processed foods, but it's healthier and may be what your body needs. It's possible that after a good time of healing you may be able to add in some... -
ARCHIVED How Do You Know You Are gluten-free?
icelandgirl replied to SMRI's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I completely understand...I get scared when that happens too...I imagine the worst. It's not good. 2 months really isn't very long, although it may feel like forever when all you want to do is feel good. Give it to at least 6 months and see where you are then. Try a food and symptoms diary, maybe all whole foods. At 6 months go get all your blood... -

I would love crock pot recommendations as well. Mine has only low or high. We use it so much when the kids are in sports and I'd love a good one with a keep warm setting. Tonight we are having baked chicken parmesan, green beans and garlic bread. -
ARCHIVED How Do You Know You Are gluten-free?
icelandgirl replied to SMRI's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi SMRI...I know that it's hard and frustrating. (hugs). How long have you been gluten free? I was diagnosed in January...8 months ago...and I still have issues, although things have improved a lot. A few things that helped me: 1. eating only whole foods, 2, not eating out at all, keeping a food and symptom diary to look for patterns. I've been... -
Thanks for the recommendations NoWhammies. My library has the book by Sue Shepard. I put it in my holds. I'm number 7 in queue for it, but hopefully it will come soon.

ARCHIVED Hormones, Hashi's And Celiac- How Does This All Work Together?
icelandgirl replied to icelandgirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks Nicole...I was sad. I had such hopes for it. The endo called me at home and we talked about it. D was one of my big issues with celiac so having something make me have D is not good. The chest tightness was really scary for me too. He mentioned Armour...he said he's not a fan, but would prescribe it. I'm scared to try anything new at this point...- 144 replies

Can you recommend a cookbook to get started?
-
Hi Nowhammies...have you done FODMAPS? If so...what did you figure out? I'm really thinking about trying this because I think it may be part of my puzzle. In recent times both pears and watermelon have made me very bloated. Also...since you write cookbooks...is there one you could recommend for this plan?
-
I do the same thing...I'm always researching...trying to figure out something. It's exhausting...but if I figure out anything that helps it will be worth it.
-
Great link Lisa...thanks for sharing that. Have you decided anything yet Serielda? I've cut so much food out trying to figure out what bothers me...The list for FODMAPS has quite a bit on it that you can eat still. I may try it.

ARCHIVED These Ingredients Look Ok To You?
icelandgirl replied to SMRI's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I agree with the others. I know for sure that carrageenan bothers me (bloating and D)...so I avoid it completely. -
Ooh...good thread! I was just thinking about asking if anyone has tried any or all of: SCD/FODMAPS/Paleo...and what they believe has worked for them. What did or didn't work, etc. Still trying to figure out the rest of my issues.

ARCHIVED Surgery And Dietary Changes
icelandgirl replied to Serielda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Serielda...I'm sorry that you had to have your gallbladder out...that seems to happen a lot around here. How are you feeling now? I had mine out in February 2 weeks after my celiac diagnosis. I'm impressed that your Dr even talked to you about nutrition. Mine did not do that and basically said that I could eat anything and everything should be just... -

ARCHIVED Hormones, Hashi's And Celiac- How Does This All Work Together?
icelandgirl replied to icelandgirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I hear you. He started me on the lowest dose 5 mcg. On the 2nd day I cut one in half and just took that but still didn't do well. My gut is still recovering but at least the chest part is done. It made me scared.- 144 replies

ARCHIVED Papa Murphy's New gluten-free Offering
icelandgirl replied to luvs2eat's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
That just sounds really unsafe. And it's a bummer because I'd love a really good pizza. Some people though will eat it. My dential hygienist has celiac disease and she eats the Domino's gluten free pizza even though they say it's not for celiacs. I wouldn't, couldn't. Ugh. -
ARCHIVED Hormones, Hashi's And Celiac- How Does This All Work Together?
icelandgirl replied to icelandgirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm bummed. I had really high hopes for the T3...unfortunately my body doesn't tolerate medications very well. I took this for 3 days, had severe tightening of the chest and D. My Dr and I agreed that I needed to go off of it. So, I'm just on T4 now. And have 177 T3 pills that I paid $75 for that I'm stuck with. Bummer. I was disappointed...I had let...- 144 replies

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
icelandgirl replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Tonight I'm making Dijon herb pork chops, buttered noodles, roasted sweet potatoes and a tossed salad. Really feels like Fall here today...so I'm going to bake a loaf of pumpkin bread...the house is going to smell so good. -
Hi there...it is hard at first. Give yourself time to grieve. Things do get easier...you will get used to the new way of eating sooner than you think. And if you were feeling poorly before the diagnosis, going gluten free will improve some symptoms fairly quickly. Starting to feel better definitely helps with coping. Definitely read the Newbie thread...

ARCHIVED Hormones, Hashi's And Celiac- How Does This All Work Together?
icelandgirl replied to icelandgirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks so much Nicole and Gemini...it's a good feeling. I've had 2 great Dr's appointments this year...One with my allergist who encouraged me to get tested for Hashis and the second yesterday with the endo. I'm definitely encouraged. Interestingly,my pharmacy doesn't stock the T3...they have to order it and I won't have it until Monday or Tuesday. ...- 144 replies

ARCHIVED Hormones, Hashi's And Celiac- How Does This All Work Together?
icelandgirl replied to icelandgirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hey all...just a little update. I love my endo. He's great! He had thyroid cancer and his wife has Graves...He really gets how the thyroid works and how it affects you! He treats based on symptoms, not numbers. He suggested adding T3 before I had a chance to ask. Crazy! So...I'm adding T3 and re checking blood work in 6 weeks, following up with him...- 144 replies
