  1. Hi Casy and welcome! I say welcome, you've been here before! Welcome back then You probably know already that you tick a lot of the celiac boxes (so answer to a) is no you're not crazy ). It's a bugger to diagnose however and you have to be eating gluten for the tests to work. So your previous test when the mess hall diet was eggs rice and chicken...
  2. Perhaps you were run down and your immune system was compromised? Here's a good paper on the subject: Open Original Shared Link Not much definitive, but this for instance is interesting: In my own case I know that under gluten I lived for years with an impaired immune system. Any cold going around I got it and kept it for longer than...
  3. There isn't a cure that I'm aware of. Mine is much, much better since I went gluten free but it's liable to recur, especially if I get run down. Nizoral is most effective shampoo but it contains wheat protein so take care!
  4. It sucks when you've taken precautions and they don't pan out. Take heart however, although it feels like you're back to square one but one exposure doesn't negate all the healing that you've gone through. Eat simply and safely for now and get back on track. You should feel better soon. As for eating out, it's the same as when you learned to ride a bike...
  5. It needed paragraphs
  6. I'm going to play Captain NCGS to Posterboy's Professor Pellagra (No doubt the Marvel and DC Cinematic Universes will soon be bidding for our services) and say that regardless of the blood test results, this: is exhibit one. You have a reaction to the gluten free diet. That doesn't necessarily eliminate fodmaps or issues with other components of wheat...
  7. I think he's right. It's a hard burden at times at any age but there will be particular challenges for your daughter as kids don't want to stick out or have to be continually monitoring things like their food. Check out this advert from a UK retailer. Beware it's so sugary it could probably give a diabetic person a sugar crash! Maybe you could do similar...
  8. Hi Michael and welcome The celiac diagnosis process can be a little confusing. Some time ago I tried to put together some info and links that may be of help: The key point would be to stay on gluten until you and your doctors are satisfied that celiac has been excluded. In your case that may include another test with a more complete panel...
  9. As a Brit the loss of fish and chips was very difficult to bear! It's our national fast food (introduced by Italian immigrants I think) and when its done well its delicious. I was really excited when a 'chippie' offering gluten free opened in my home town. I drive past perhaps a dozen in order to get there. A couple of weeks ago I was too late as they...
  10. Hi I'm in the UK so brand recommendations probably no help to you, although we have Uncle Ben's over here which is fine to my knowledge. I have to say I approach rice on the assumption that it should be safe unless I hear otherwise, that may not be the best approach if as you say you're particularly sensitive and want to cover all the bases. The exception...
  11. That's a bit more than I normally have at lunch but I'll give it a try.
  12. I used to worry I was having a heart attack. The symptoms, a pressing, intense chest pain on left side of chest lasting several minutes sometimes. I went through extensive cardio tests and when they turned up negative was told to live with it. I had bouts of it through my life until I went gluten free for entirely different symptoms. Getting rid of those...
  13. Hello and welcome I'd just echo CyclingLady - do you need to put yourself through this? There are lots of good reasons for pursuing a diagnosis but amongst the strongest are helping you to 'keep honest' on the diet or ensuring that your not denying yourselves a lot of foods for good reason. Neither of these apply to you and so I'd have to ask what...
  14. My own bugbear is that in dismissing the fad diet journalists will typically reference Celiac but will often say that only Celiac patients should be following the gluten free diet. Whatever the consensus medical opinion of NCGS, it's a fact that there are many people who are not diagnosed Celiac but who have been advised by their doctors to follow a gluten...
  15. Well first things first, I always read your posts with interest, you have gone the extra mile for answers, put the intellectual work in and crucially kept a rational and grounded perspective throughout and if anyone deserves them you do. Sadly of course I don't have any, so I'll simply send my sincere best wishes across the Atlantic. I really do hope you...
  16. I think this site is a far better source of info and support than any of the Facebook groups I've seen. Its certainly been a great help to me. I found that too much web surfing on some other sites including Facebook just made things more difficult, there are either sites pushing commercial solutions with little real scientific grounding or there are often...
  17. Thanks Barry. It's just up the road from me and it's a place I know very well. Some of my family were there last week for a gig, it's a frightening thought. You are most definitely not alone and you've found a good site. There are a lot of accounts on here which helped me join the dots and work out what was happening with my own reaction to gluten. ...
  18. It took me 20 years or more Barry so I wouldn't claim any great insight on this I had a 'eureka' moment, up until then I was walking around with multiple symptoms and not connecting any dots whatsoever. It is very, very difficult to diagnose and that's something that's reflected in so many of the experiences detailed here. A food diary may help in...
  19. Hi Liz and welcome 1) Yes, although it's very difficult to generalise as people's reactions are so different 2) Impossible to say, see answer 1 Sorry, it really is difficult to be sure. Even a negative test and biopsy doesn't categorically confirm gluten isn't an issue, that's what happened to me. I'd say 7 days would be very quick for the...
  20. I'm in the UK so I doubt many of the brands I would choose would be available to you. I have had the Kirkland (Costco) coffee without a problem and it's excellent value.
  21. You're welcome let me know how it tastes. I quite enjoy prepping it, like being a surgeon, except the prognosis for the patient isn't great...
  22. Hi PB, You've not read it wrong I've phrased it poorly at least if I'm reading it correctly! The high and low gluten levels detected in the duodenum were recorded against higher and lower doses of the AN-PEP enzyme. I take it that all subjects ate the same initial amount of gluten. So those lower dose actually marginally outperformed the higher one...
  23. Hello and welcome As CyclingLady says, we're not doctors and can't give medical advice. It would be wrong to try and replicate their function remotely via posts. That said many members here have suffered either your symptoms or similar: It could be helpful if you supplied a little more detail. For instance, just on eliminating celiac or non celiac...
  24. I drink a fair amount of coffee, 90% of which is decaffeinated. I take it black and unsweetened. Occasionally I will get a churning stomach from one brand, but I don't put that down to gluten but to coffee's natural effect on the gut. I guess if I were looking to improve my diet I'd look at cutting down or cutting completely, but hell, I've not got...
  25. Sure but it's nothing special I slice garlic thinly then poke holes in the skin with the tip of a sharp knife and slide the garlic slices underneath so they sit between the skin and the meat, I rub a little olive oil onto the skin then season with salt and pepper. I halve a lemon and place it in the bird along with a halved onion and a little more garlic...
