ARCHIVED Choosing A Pediatrician & Vaccinesshayesmom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I was at a seminar a couple of months ago and the speaker (from an internationally known hospital) did address the issue of vaccines triggering celiac disease. In short...YES. It can happen. Stress is an environmental trigger for Celiac. And being vaccinated can induce stress. Also, for those who have symptoms seemingly from birth....both pregancy and...

ARCHIVED Help With Stomach Painshayesmom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Paula, This is such a hard thing to deal with and it's terrible for the child affected as well as for the parents. The only "advice" that I can give is to light a fire under the doctor's behind and/or sit down and talk with your son about what he wants to do. It's very easy for the doctors to tell you to wait while they try to fit your son into...

ARCHIVED Positive Dietary Response In Toddler!shayesmom replied to Tony'sMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Glad to hear that your little one is responding well to the diet! After seeing such positive results....doesn't it make you wonder just how "accurate" these tests are? It may just be me, but I believe that anyone undergoing tests for Celiac should follow up testing with a 2 week dietary trial just to be sure gluten isn't an issue. It seems a lot...

ARCHIVED Help! Stressed And Totally Confused.shayesmom replied to rez's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs P.S. I posted last year (I believe in December 2005...so a bit more than a year ago) on how my dd was exposed to some gluten without any reactions. I "challenged" her a few times with no response. However, I didn't care to push the issue and kept her gluten-free after that. Dd does relatively okay with trace exposures but her reactions to larger amounts...

ARCHIVED Help! Stressed And Totally Confused.shayesmom replied to rez's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I understand your desire for a positive diagnosis. But always keep it in mind that sometimes there are things in life of which we cannot be 100% sure of. Not wanting to diagnose your child with a life-long condition is normal. But at the same time, you don't know what's in store for you or him down the road. And an ounce of prevention now may be worth...

ARCHIVED Help! Stressed And Totally Confused.shayesmom replied to rez's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I've read of people having biopsy-proven Celiac who have gone on the diet for a year, been biopsied to reveal the intestines were completely healed and then went back on gluten and it taking several years for the damage to reappear on biopsy. There comes a point where you just need to draw a line on the doctors experimenting with your child's health on the...

ARCHIVED Does This Sound Familiar To Anybody?shayesmom replied to cgilsing's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs With the formulas, it really can be difficult to find another potential allergen as the ingredients are impossible to pronounce, much less trace back to what it's derived from. Since you're looking at a potential gluten problem and definite dairy problem....I'd advise you to look at the soy. My dd couldn't tolerate most of those formulas at all. In...

ARCHIVED Test Results Are Inshayesmom replied to hillyb6's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My mom gets tested and scoped about every 3 years (this has been going on for over a decade). Negative every time. However, she does notice a huge difference when she's on the diet. Since she has no formal diagnosis, she doesn't adhere to the diet 100% and so "picks and chooses" when she's going to poison herself and take her time out in the bathroom....

ARCHIVED I Would Like Some Advice.shayesmom replied to TBLKWL's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs If I had a quarter for every bit of bad advice I was given in regards to my dd....we'd have money to buy gluten-free food for at least a year! lol!! With a slightly elevated tTg, I'd say the diet is right for your dd. My dd's tests all came back negative for Celiac and yet she did amazingly well once on the diet. Let's face it...as good as our medical...

I've come up with a month-long lunch menu for my dd (who won't be in full-time school for over a year. I like to plan ahead ). Here are some ideas: Pasta salads with either veggies or even tuna or seafood. Spaghetti and meatballs, BLT salad or sandwich, any homemade soups, chicken salad, BBQ chicken strips, Waffle sticks with fresh fruit and homefries...

ARCHIVED In Tears And Confusedshayesmom replied to jaysmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Yes, it would be best to find a new doctor. However, everyone is different in terms of how they deal with the situation they are in as well as how they approach it. I went through 3 pedis and 2 pedi GIs with my dd. We did a Celiac panel and it came back negative. Since she was so small and diagnosed FTT, I opted not to go for the biopsy and to do the...

I think that it's pretty common to have serious pain become a problem if you're an untreated Celiac who just had a child. Pregnancy takes a lot out of you as does childbirth and motherhood. I had a miserable time after having dd due to mood swings, not feeling well and horrific foot pain that was so bad I thought I had stress fractures in my feet. My...

ARCHIVED Should Celiacs Get Flu Shots?shayesmom replied to acousticmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I brought those same points up to him and he talked to the hospital about it. They told him he needed to keep current on all vaccines and boosters unless he could the medical record from a doctor stating that he did indeed have the chicken pox. His parents never took him to the doctor when he had it as one of his siblings got it and it was confirmed by...

ARCHIVED Should Celiacs Get Flu Shots?shayesmom replied to acousticmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease This is kind of ironic, but yesterday seemed to be the day for me to hear about adverse reactions to the flu shot. I got THREE calls in one day from friends and relatives who were suffering through some pretty nasty reactions. One of them gets sick for 7 days each year he gets the shot....which is EVERY year as he is military and is required to be jabbed...

ARCHIVED Should Celiacs Get Flu Shots?shayesmom replied to acousticmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease This is so incredibly true. It's an incredible shame that work places condone this behavior and then everyone gets sick. And you find the same thing applies to schools. I have heard DOZENS of mothers say that if their child is sick and running a temp, they just give the child Motrin so that the fever goes down and they can send the kid to school. I've...

ARCHIVED I Glutened Her !shayesmom replied to vampella's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Please don't beat yourself up over this. We all make mistakes....it's all part of the process in learning about this diet and getting to the point where the mistakes are minimal. You WILL be there in NO time! I'm glad that you did write to Envirokidz though. We've been having a rough time with their products as well. Their gluten-free cereal bars...

ARCHIVED Should Celiacs Get Flu Shots?shayesmom replied to acousticmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease The neurodegenerative conditions associated with mercury are much easier to understand once you've seen how mercury affects brain cell growth. A really good video showing how very small amounts of mercury can destroy brain cell growth is on this site: Open Original Shared Link I found it particularly interesting that the video mentions inhaled and ingested...

ARCHIVED Chex Mixshayesmom replied to squirt2476's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs I've found that a mix of Rice Crunch'Ems, Glutino pretzels, cashews and some Italian seasoning all mixed with a bit of olive oil and baked make an awesome Chex Mix. Better still, you can then take a portion of the mix, crush it in a plastic bag and then use it to coat chicken for fried or baked chicken. It is REALLY good!

ARCHIVED What Do You Do For Lunches?shayesmom replied to prinsessa's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs My dd is only in pre-school twice a week. The teacher provides me with the monthly snack menu and I then circle the things which are okay for my dd to have (there are very few as my dd has multiple food intolerances). From that point, I spend a weekend baking up similar treats (or buying them if available) and I give it to the teacher to store in the school...

ARCHIVED One Year gluten-free Anniversary Todayshayesmom replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Congratulations TWICE over! Sounds like you have many things to be happy about and it's wonderful of you to share the joy!

ARCHIVED Should Celiacs Get Flu Shots?shayesmom replied to acousticmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Carol, The decision to vaccinate is up to the individual. Since the flu shot is "optional" and not mandated, I would highly recommend that you make sure the shot is thimerosal-free. Also, since your ds is getting into the teen years, perhaps you could ask him what his thoughts are (maybe let him do a bit of research on his own). There have been...

ARCHIVED Amoxicillianshayesmom replied to lkelli's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs It could also be a separate intolerance/allergy to the antibiotic itself, the colorings or some other ingredient. I hope that ear infections aren't a common occurence in your house, but if so, you may want to try some garlic oil drops in the ears to see if that helps. And some probiotics may help get the stomach issues back in control after a dosing...

ARCHIVED What To Do?shayesmom replied to chrrsn's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs This kind of attitude just KILLS me! I got the same kind of BS from my dd's doctors as well when I put her on the diet and she responded well.....AFTER she'd been poked, prodded and made miserable with all their pastas, butters, oils, breads and supplements to "fix" her weight gain problems. It's such a bunch of bull! It seems to me that your observations...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Ever Heard Of Thisshayesmom replied to rutland's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I found that it helped me with energy and I definitely have felt better. I think that one of the main keys is to keep well hydrated and to stick with organic and unprocessed foods. The homeopath that I saw had never mentioned doing the protocol for 14 days. He felt it was "enough" to drink that once per day and to then keep up with drinking purified water...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Ever Heard Of Thisshayesmom replied to rutland's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease One thing that was recommended by our homeopath and may be helpful is to drink 1 eight ounce glass of this each day: 8 oz. pure, filtered water, juice of 1 organic lemon, 1 tsp pure maple syrup and a pinch of cayenne pepper. From there, make sure that you are drinking an appropriate amount of pure water each day. That would be half of your weight in oz...
