ARCHIVED The Trouble With Soy- Trouble With Soy Lecithin, Too?
jnclelland replied to oceangirl's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
This is one of those "everyone's different" things. For me, soy lecithin in a chocolate bar (even one with no gluten or dairy, which are my other problem foods) makes my hands break out in a rash for a few days, so I definitely react to it. But not everyone does. Jeanne -
ARCHIVED Diva Cup Question
jnclelland replied to jnclelland's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I checked the web site, and it doesn't look like the smaller size is any shorter. But I decided to throw caution to the wind, ignore the directions, and cut the stem completely off. (Watch out - next thing you know, I'll be running with scissors! ) That helped a LOT; I can still feel it, but it's not terribly uncomfortable anymore. I even went on a... -
ARCHIVED Diva Cup Question
jnclelland replied to jnclelland's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I do wonder if a smaller size would work better. It stays in place fine; it's just that the place where it stays is a little too low to be comfortable. I know there's an issue of vaginal stretching because of having had 2 kids, but my feeling is that my vagina is a little too *short* for this one. After a couple of days, I can report that it feels fine... -
ARCHIVED Diva Cup Question
jnclelland replied to jnclelland's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yup, I got size 2. (I'm over 30 AND have 2 kids!) I tried trimming the stem, but it didn't really help. And I'm inserting it as far as it will go; it's fine at first, but then it slides down to this uncomfortable position. -sigh- And it sounded like such a great idea! I guess I'll try doing more Kegels for awhile, but I suspect that somehow my... -
ARCHIVED Diva Cup Question
jnclelland replied to jnclelland's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yeah, I looked at the web site and read the directions carefully, and after a few tries I was able to spin it, so I don't think that's the problem. I may try trimming the stem, but I think it's slipping low enough that even the base of the cup would bother me. I do semi-regular (okay, not regular enough!) Kegels, so I wouldn't have *thought* that would... -
Okay, after reading everyone raving about the Diva cup, I ordered one. I'm trying it for the first time today, and I REALLY want to like it, but I'm either doing something wrong, or else I'm just shaped funny. I'm pretty sure I'm inserting it right, but within a few minutes it slips down so that the stem - and even a bit of the base - is protruding...

ARCHIVED Soy Lecticin
jnclelland replied to alamaz's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yup. Soy lecithin makes me break out in a rash on my hand, so it's certainly *possible* to have a reaction to it. Jeanne -
Ack, ack, I meant to tape it, but I forgot! I don't suppose anyone taped it? Jeanne

I'm going to Honolulu for 5 days next week. (Gotta visit my research collaborator at UH during spring break - poor me, huh? ) Anyway, can anyone recommend places in Waikiki (or Honolulu in general) to get a gluten/dairy/soy-free meal? The soy makes it really hard, as it basically means that Asian food isn't an option. Jeanne

ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerance With Eczema?
jnclelland replied to PianoMan99's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When I first started on this whole journey, it was because I started seeing a new acupuncturist, and she told me that I was allergic to wheat and dairy, and that I needed to stop eating them before she would be able to help me feel better. My initial reaction to this was something like, "Great - would you like me to sprout wings and fly, too?" But eventually... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerance With Eczema?
jnclelland replied to PianoMan99's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Unfortunately, 5 days might not be long enough to tell. I had lifelong eczema, some on my inner elbows, but mostly on my hands and face. It got noticeably better within a week off gluten, but it took months before it cleared up completely. However, it DID eventually clear up completely, and I'm still amazed to have soft, smooth skin where I used to have... -
ARCHIVED What Fat Can I Use To Make Cookies
jnclelland replied to hathor's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm so excited to see this thread! My 6yo is always saying to me, "Mommy, I feel really bad for you that you can't eat XXXXX." So for his science fair project, we decided to experiment with different ingredients to create a gluten/dairy/soy-free cookie recipe. He's really excited about it, and now I have some ideas for things to try for butter replacements... -
ARCHIVED Pam Cooking Spray
jnclelland replied to IsAMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The one that's not gluten-free is actually called something like "Pam with flour," so it's pretty obvious. I use Pam for Grilling, because it's the only cooking spray I've found that's soy-free as well as gluten/dairy-free. Jeanne -
ARCHIVED Coconut Milk
jnclelland replied to simplicity66's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You're welcome! When I first started trying hazelnut milk, I would just microwave it and add espresso to it. That's okay - but then I got my own cappucino machine for Christmas, and I was so excited to see that it really would froth a bit! Not as much as real milk, but enough to feel like a real latte. I imagine that almond milk would work too, but... -
ARCHIVED Coconut Milk
jnclelland replied to simplicity66's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I make lattes with hazelnut milk (Pacific brand); it froths quite nicely, and it makes a yummy latte! Jeanne -
Soy lecithin gives me a distinctive rash on my hands, so no, it's not safe for *everyone*. Jeanne

I've been doing South Beach since May, and I really like it. First of all, it calls for a lot LESS grains than I used to eat, so I don't have to do as much gluten-free subsitution as I used to. As for which grains to eat - I do fudge it a little bit since there are fewer to choose from. Most mornings for breakfast I have either a piece of toast on gluten...

Ricola Cough Drops
jnclelland replied to lemonade's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just sent an inquiry to Ricola and got a reply back; apparently they are NOT completely gluten-free! Here's the email I sent: I would like to know more about the gluten-free status of Ricola cough drops. Your web site says that they contain less than 0.01% gluten. Does this mean that they definitely contain a very small amount of gluten (for... -
ARCHIVED About To Go Dairy Free And Depressed As All Get Out About It
jnclelland replied to eLaurie's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Oh good - those are yummy too! Even my non-gluten-free kids liked them. Well, I was kind of making it up as I went along, but it seemed for me that the yeast problem was basically anything fermented: vinegar, wine, soy sauce, etc. (This was before I realized I had a soy intolerance too.) Tell me about it! I was gluten... -
ARCHIVED About To Go Dairy Free And Depressed As All Get Out About It
jnclelland replied to eLaurie's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Fear not - it's yummy! I first ordered it when I was having a problem with yeast; after a few months I stopped reacting to vinegar and other yeasty things, but I liked the bread so much that I kept ordering it. It's a little bit crumbly, and definitely best when it's fresh, but the taste and texture are really nice! One tip: at first I found that it got... -
ARCHIVED For Those Who Are Dairy Free
jnclelland replied to Lisa's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Canola oil??? Did I miss a memo or something? Is canola oil really a common problem for celiacs? Why? (For the record, it doesn't cause me any problems as far as I can tell.) Jeanne -
ARCHIVED What To Do Now?
jnclelland replied to chocolatelover's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Maybe that's your answer: if you feel better being off gluten and dairy, then don't eat them! I also never got any official diagnosis; even Enterolab came back negative, probably because I waited too long after going gluten-free to do it. I was really frustrated about not being "official" for awhile, but eventually I came around to realizing that -... -
ARCHIVED Question About Adding Dairy Back In
jnclelland replied to jnclelland's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
That's why I tried parmesan first; I wanted to try to differentiate between casein and lactose so I'd know which one was causing problems if I had a reaction. Of course, I *hope* that my main problem is gluten, and that I've just healed enough that I'll no longer react to whatever caused the reaction a year ago. I'm thrilled that I don't seem to be reacting... -
ARCHIVED Question About Adding Dairy Back In
jnclelland posted a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I've been gluten and dairy-free for about a year and a half now. When I tried some dairy (yogurt) about a year ago, I definitely reacted to it: I broke out in a rash on my arms that lasted for several days. So it wasn't just lactose intolerance, but probably a reaction to casein. So anyway, I recently decided to experiment again. I'm starting with parmesan... -
ARCHIVED Cocoa ?
jnclelland replied to georgie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Giving up half and half in my coffee was the hardest thing about going dairy-free to me! I can't stand black coffee, but I've found some decent substitutes. If you can tolerate soy, Silk makes a soy-based creamer that is quite good. Unfortunately for me, not long after discovering it, I realized I had a problem with soy too. So now I make my own lattes...
