  1. What I've done is this: I've settled into two starches a day, at breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is usually a piece of toast made from Breads by Anna bread. It's not technically whole grain, but it's closer than a lot of gluten-free breads. If not that, then Arrowhead Mills "Rice and Shine" cream of rice cereal. Dinner is usually brown rice, quinoa ...
  2. Personally, I would only do it if it's a direct flight. I've had too many experiences with missed connections and being stuck in hotel rooms in strange cities overnight to ever risk my child having to deal with that without me. Jeanne

    ARCHIVED Kaiser Insurance?!

I understand that Kaiser varies considerably depending on where you are. I'm in Colorado, and in my experience, on any given day you may see any given doctor. I do get to choose a primary doctor, and I schedule my annual physical, etc., with him. But when I call to schedule an appointment because someone is sick, we just get assigned to whoever is available...
  4. I never did like milk in my coffee; it HAD to be half and half. But the Silk creamer is a pretty good imitation of half and half, and I really liked it. Jeanne
  5. If you can tolerate soy, Silk makes a very good casein-free coffee creamer. I adored it until I realized that soy was causing me problems too! Jeanne
  6. Ooooh, thanks for those two web sites - that's exactly what she needs! Jeanne
  7. Breads by Anna has a yeast-free (and most other things-free) bread mix that's really good. You can order it at Open Original Shared Link. Jeanne
  8. She's been through quite a long process of elimination diets, antibiotics for bad intestinal bacteria, and all sorts of other things. She's working with a good GI who she likes, and she's pretty sure that she has the right diagnosis at this point. What she needs to know is how to get accurate information regarding the fructose content of foods. (It's not...
  9. I have a friend who has just been diagnosed with fructose intolerance, and she's having a hard time finding any info about the fructose content of various foods. She came across the website for the "Tuesday Club" at Open Original Shared Link, which claims to have this amazing detection diet (which she doesn't need since she already knows what the problem...
  10. Sure, I'm game! :-) I think there are a few other SBD'er's around here, so maybe they'll jump in too. It's definitely different doing it gluten/dairy-free. But still, I did get a few useful tidbits from the SBD forum - like, for instance, be sure that in Phase 1 you really are eating ALL the allowed carbs, or you can end up feeling pretty crummy after...
  11. Laura, I've been doing South Beach for about a year, and I love it! I've been doing it gluten/dariy/soy-free, which does require some modifications to the diet as written, but it can be done. It's certainly a lot healthier than I was eating before, and I feel better than I have in - well, ever, I guess! The article that Ursa posted was interesting...
  12. I'll second this! I've Been doing South Beach for a year, and it's really easy to do it gluten-free. (Plus I've lost 15 pounds and feel great!) I'm also doing it dairy and soy-free, which is a bit trickier than just gluten-free, but it still works. Jeanne
  13. My ears perked up at "right side inflammations" - can you tell me more about those? Soy makes me break out primarily on my right hand, and I've always thought it was bizarre that it's so one-sided. Jeanne
  14. I've heard about it here, and it's actually mentioned in the article above. Apparently they use various things (I think some milk product and egg whites were mentioned) as "fining agents." I'm not sure exactly what that means, but I get the impression that they sort of strain the wine through these things to remove particulate matter, or something like...
  15. There was an article in my local paper this morning about how winemakers may soon be required to list ingredients and allergens on their labels - and, of course, why they don't want to! But here's what was news to me: I've always thought that wine was pretty reliably gluten-free (although possibly not casein-free, which is also an issue for me). But according...
  16. Yup - me! I hemmed and hawed and waited 8 months after going gluten-free (on the advice of my acupuncturist, so no other medical tests either) before I tested through Enterolab, and my test came back negative. But going gluten-free had immediate, dramatic, positive effects, so I KNOW that gluten is bad for me no matter what the tests say. My suspicion...
  17. I second this one! The foot exercises in there were what finally fixed my plantar fasciitis. Jeanne
  18. Math professor here - so add me to the geek list! Jeanne
  19. I *highly* recommend Breads by Anna's gluten/yeast-free bread mix. (It's also free of dairy, soy, and several other major allergens.) You can order it from www.glutenevolution.com. Jeanne
  20. Well, if he's taking you out to eat, he can't be THAT unfriendly. (I'm a professor and very few of us bite, I swear!) I have enough intolerances (gluten, dairy, and soy) that I've taken to just bringing my own food when I'm going out in a group unless I know exactly where we're going and what will be available. I've never had a problem, either with the...
  21. Welcome! If you browse this web site for awhile, you'll learn lots about gluten intolerance/celiac disease. The short answer is that yes, all the symptoms you mention can be signs of gluten intolerance/celiac disease, although they can certainly have other causes as well. You certainly would have nothing to lose by trying a gluten-free diet and seeing...
  22. I'm on month 2 with the Diva cup, and I think I'm getting the hang of it better this time. Cutting off the stem definitely made a big difference, and I think doing more Kegels this month has helped too. Definitely a big improvement over tampons - I LOVE that I can leave it in for several hours on my heaviest days without leaks! As for the IUD issue...
  23. The gluten-free bakery is in south Denver, and it's called Deby's gluten-free cafe. It's WELL worth the trip, and you can check out the web site at Open Original Shared Link. (OMG - I just looked at the web site, and it says that they now have a location in Erie!!! I'm SOOOO excited!!!) Have a great trip! Jeanne
  24. I was in New Orleans, in the Quarter, for a conference in January - and I gotta say, it was the hardest place I've ever visited for accommodating all my food intolerances. If it was just gluten I probably would have been okay - but dairy was a real b**** to avoid. I went to several places - and I mean nice, high end places - where they claimed that EVERY...
